  The kernel - HOWTO is a super document. Take the plunge without
fear. There's only one thing that the HOWTO misses ( i am not sure whether
it has been updated) is about updating the system map. After the
compilation is complete go to /boot directory and do a 

ln -s <new system map> System.map

and you will be fine.
