I had suspend problems with an IBM 385XD. I had to downgrade the BIOS
to version 1.01 to get around it. I was using kernel 2.0.35.
Another problem with the 385XD is that it would refuse to suspend
if there was a PCMCIA card inserted; it went into Standby instead.

The problem with Standby is that it uses more power, because the
machine is still running -- only the display and hard disk are
powered down, as far as I can tell. I didn't test the limits
on battery life on the 385XD under Standby (it's not my machine).
I would guess it's less than a day.
