The disk can power up if some process wishes to write to disk.
I wouldn't carry a machine around in my bag that has the disk running.
That is really asking for trouble I suspect.
I never use hibernation. Too much trouble. Suspend eats about 10% of
the battery life per day (rought estimate). Thus you would have a dead
battery after 10 days. If I were not going to use the machine for 3 or
4 days, I probably would use hibernation. Otherwise forget it.
FUI, I have an IBM560X, RH5.1. The machine will Suspend if an
ethernet card is plugged in, but 1/10 times it takes several tries.
Personally I couldn't live without suspend. It is a critical function.
It is very important to solve this problem with Win98 BIOS's not working
well with linux (This comment is directed at the "downgrade to 1.01"
comment above.)

-Does buggy software (that you paid money for) make you grumpy?
-How about messages like:
"Consult your system administrator" (Hey, that's me!)
"Out of memory Error" (What, I have 100 MB already!)
"System error, Please reboot" (Yeah, and then reinstall windows.)
=> Problem solved: Get Linux!"
