In Edit/Preference/News Group...
there is an option "news group dir".

make sure you really have this dir made.

Subject: [Q] Make http documents created by user modifiable by www group?
Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 03:52:46 GMT

I want to make my web documents writable by the www group, so users
who manage the web files can write to there. If I make them owned by
the www group and writable by the www group and a user writes a file
to there, the file ends up having the group ownership of "users" and
other users can't modify the file.

I would like it so that when the file is created it is part of the www
group and is writable by the www group. How do I do that? Example
follows. I am the sys admin.

darkstar:$ whoami

brian

darkstar:$ cat /etc/group

-rw-r--r-- 1 brian users 0 Feb 17 19:32 test.html

I want test.html so it looks like:

-rw-rw-r-- 1 brian www 0 Feb 17 19:32 test.html

How do I that without issuing
darkstar:$ chgrp www test.html
and
darkstar:$ chmod 0664 test.html
on all the files I create. I know I can do a
darkstar:$ umask 0113
to get the right permissions while working in the directory, but is
there a way to make the mask apply to this area without having to
remember to issue it?

Should I be approaching this from a different angle?

Dishonest people change discussions about ideals into attacks on
individuals. This isn't the first time that you have done this. Also,
someone deleted my posting, so this is a slightly reworded and expanded
reposting.

Honest statement about my position:

I understand that you wrote the code, and incorrectly and
call your software free, and I'm still going to
complain about the ersatz-free copyright -- only because
it isn't free. I'll answer the question honestly when
discussion comes up.

You are totally incorrect if you somehow think that I hate
GPL so badly that I won't use such software, or feel somehow
tainted by using software properly under any license. Just
reflect on that fact that Microsoft doesn't imply or suggest
that their software is generally free... In that sense,
I feel more comfortable with their license.

Let's see here: you can encumber your works when you link
your code with commercial code -- you also can sigificantly
encumber your works when you link your code with GPL
code. The kind of encumberance with GPL is a set of hoops
that you have to go through to distribute your own works that
are somehow linked with GPLed code. (One of them is that
you have to give away your source code.) That hoop is
very very costly.

BSD hoop has to do with mention of the functions or features
in advertisement. The trick is to avoid mentioning the stuff
that triggers the advertisement clause -- and that is easy
if the primary feature of your package isn't the BSD licensed
code. Your source code is safe (when using BSD or other free
software) from nasty redistribution encumberances.

Hi,

I can't seem to get my SCSI Toshiba CDRom to work. (It's Toshiba
XM-5401TA.)
My SCSI adapter is the Adaptec 2940UW. Everything works under Windows
(i.e. hardware is OK). The two harddisks work perfectly fine under
linux.

Now I just installed the new linux system (Slackware 3.6) which tells me
that the supplied bootdisk had an adeqate kernel. However I still
could't mount my cdrom drive.
(I tried >>>mount /dev/hdc /cdrom, and mount would respond /dev/sdc is
not a valid block device). But it did recognize the drive at boot time
saying something like "SCSI CDROM sr0 .. ID:5 detected".

Since then I've rebuilt my kernel. I definitely enabled the SCSI CDROM
option. Now, it doesn't even recognize the drive at boottime.

What else can I try?
How do I know which device it has to be?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Without getting into whether a BSD-style license or GNU is better,
I just want to say that if your legal council thinks that having
ever released something under GNU makes them too dangerous to hire,
then they are completely FUCKED UP. And if you listen to them,
then maybe you worry too much about things that aren't worth

I like FreeBSD. I'm sick of listening to all this crap about what
license is better. It's sounding more and more like going to a Linux

The 3COM 3C905BTX is running without problems in my two PCs under SuSE
6.0, kernel 2.2.1 . I think there is not a problem trying out the new
kernel, because you can save the old one, try the new one, if it does
not work switch back to the old one.
After installing the 2.2.1 kernel I had to change the IP Masquerading
mechanism from ipfwadm to ipchains and adapt the way the soundcard is
configured. That was it.

I am interested in speaking with some Linux users (prefereably
Network/System Admins) in the Houston Texas area. The people I would
like to speak with must be EXPERTS in all aspects of setting up and
maintaining Linux in a production networked environment (especially one
that includes machines w/ other OSes on them).

If you are interested and QUALIFIED there is a potential to be involved
in an interesting project and possibly even make some $$$ in the
process. If you have doubts in your qualifactions and skills w/ Linux
then you need not respond to this posting. Please respond by email to

I assure you that this is not another annoying recruiting company to
bother the H-LL out of you, it is an opportunity to help promote Linux
in production environments and hopefully have a little fun in the
process.

I look forward to speaking with any/all qualified individuals.

Quite true. It isn't long ago that Clinton was greeted with standing
ovations in the UN by all the world's leaders - as a token of their
sympathy with him because of the absurd and childish way he was being
harassed by his own peers.

To be quite frank, in spite of the obvious military and economic power
of the USA, it is very difficult to actually respect the country,
because
of this stiff, hypocritic 'christianity' and 'morality' that leading
politicians so shamelessly indulge in over there - and I suspect that
most americans feel the same way. In my eyes it is far more respectable
to be a simple thief than a religious hypocrit, who says 'Jesus loves
you' and then steals your money and abuses you and your life.

And now let's return to Linux, please.

Gentlemen ... respectfully, *NOBODY* who is interested in not
sparking a flame war should be arguing the merits of GPL verses BSD
verses 'free' in a cross-posted thread.

This reminds me of a sci-fi story I read years ago where a bunch of
bad guys were cooperating with each other but didn't speak the same
language. They had a translator box with them. Unknown to them, the
translator box was putting a good spin on their conversations to prevent
    them from killing each other.

So, for example, something like "Take your disgusting alien butt out of
my sight" would be translated to "Sera respectfully requests that she
place her worthless self in the front of the line".

So, please, allow the normal partitioning of newsgroups to function
as it is designed and don't cross post religious postings.

Oh yah, the ending of the story: The good guy sneaks in and removes
the spin filter on the translator. The obvious then follows.

None of them are even close to good law. I'll never understand why people
won't learn a little more about how capitalism is effected under American
law. Oh, yeah... that's right: it's because our government won't better
subsidize their education so they can take some 200-level Economics
classes. Sorry.

Further to John Smith's suggestions; why stop at just partial government
intervention in business? Hmm? Why not just put a government bureaucrat
in a corner office of every software manufacturer in the country? Just
make it so that all new revs of software have to be reviewed and approved
by the Justice Department and FTC prior to development. And, why stop at
software? Let's put the DOJ and FTC at the corporate head of every
company in America!

Yeah! Hey, let's take this a step further... since it's the Government
(via DOJ and FTC) that will be >deciding< innovation for us in the future,
isn't it the people's right to reap the rewards of this innovation? I
mean, since we the taxpayers pay the DOJ and FTC bureaucrats to sit in
corporate offices, shouldn't we benefit when they do something right? SO,
what we'll do is we'll redistribute all corporate earnings to "the people"
-- first, by the U.S. Government capturing all corporate profits, then
eventually the money will trickle down to the working class in the form of
cans of beans and rags of bread!! I think we're on to something here!

I apologize if one or more of these are considered the wrong group. I

never got much of a reply.

I'm not new to Linux, but I don't have much experience with X. I have
been wondering a few things about X.

1) What are the advantages/disadvantages of E, WindowMaker, KDE, and
AfterStep (I think I'm leaning toward WindowMaker)?
2) Is there a way to switch WM's while you're in your X session?
3) What exactly is GNOME? I know it's not really a separate WM, but it
still will run GTK themes? How does this work?
4) I know this is objective, but give me your opinions: which WM's are
superior in resource usage, graphical look, and "feel"?
5) I know this is trivial, but I like the "transparent window" look. Is
this possible with any WM?
