The printer you have bought is a Windows GDI printer and will only work
with MS Windows.

I suggest that you return it to the vendor (assuming that you had the good
sense to specify that you were buying the printer for a non-MS Windows
system and are thus able to do so) and get a supported printer. To the
best of my knowledge all other HP Deskjet printers are supported.

Do you need to use slip? There is a gpppkill utility that
can kill the ppp interface after a user-defined idle time.
It has a nice load monitor also...

I suspect this is a problem with the terminal emulation in
your telnet client. The stock Win95|98|NT telnet client is
notoriously lame. I don't use telnet often enough in Windows
to have felt the need to replace it, but were I to look I
would probably try kermit from Columbia University. They
have developed kermit as a very capable cross-platform
terminal program.

As far as I know (newbie), vfat does not have the system of
file permissions that parallels the Linux native file system.
So what you are trying to do seems improssible to me.
You may want to send your complaints to the designers of
vfat.

If you want all users to be able to acess your vfat partion in
read-write mode, you have to edit file etc/fstab and specify
the "user" on the line that mentions this filesystem.

I posted a webside that explains in detail how to do it.

Did you try to run "netconf" from the command line as root,
and under ppp config menu choose that users may (de)activate the connection?

PPP worked so easy to me and I am also a newbie. You may want to see the help

It deals with ppp setup too.

I have successfully compiled a new kernel with the Inito drivers
installed. My card is connected to a Syjet. At boot up all the
Inito drivers come up including my Syjet.

However when I start xwindows the system crashes. This does not
happen on the other kernel.

I am using Red Hat 5.1 with kernel 2.0.34 on a 300mhz machinge
with a 19 inch monitor. I have an STB 128 AGP card and the card
hooked up to the syjet is a PCI.

Does anyone have any suggestions and/or solutions??

Thanx in advance

P.S. I have already contacted Initio and they have been of very
little help. They told me that there was something wrong with my
Xconfiguration but thats not the problem because xwindows works
fine with the other kernel minus the Inito drivers. The intio drivers
have to be doing something to cause this problem.

Date: Sat, 20 Feb 1999 22:13:15 +0800

HELLO! World,

Help needed!!

I installed RedHat 5.2 on my Pentium PC, where, due to the size of my
harddisk (small, but responsible to accommodate two Operating Systems,
viz Win95 and Linux), I kept all software in minimum possible level.

After the installion, I tried to compile hello.c and hello.C files,
using gcc. But, I received the error messages, '<stdio.h> file not
found" in helo.c's case, and "<iostream.h> file not found" in helo.C's.
I installed necessary libraries, and tried both files again; helo.c
worked, but not helo.C.

libg++ library, which, as far as I know is the one for C++ compiler, is
there in my system, but compiler does not use it. It seems, I have to
link that library somewhere, somehow before compiling again, but I do
not know how!

Could any one out there let me know how I solve this problem?

PLEASE WRITE ME ON [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yours Sincerely,

THAPA DAMAR

How about creating a client server model via RPC calls.
You can give certain paramters to the RPC with username, password,
groups etc.
Then those parameters will be used in the adduser program.
RPC programming is abit tricky though. But with Java you can do nice
socketprogramming.

sorry, my Message was wrong. the ATA specifications proclaim that you can
low-level format any normal (new) EIDE drive. Older ones are damaged by
low-level formatting. So don't low-level drives lower than 500 MB. First ask

The point is that the Windows 98 setting is supposedly MPPP rather than
EQL.

Also AFAIK the standard pppd does not understand any ML associated LCP,
though the code for this is in ipppd.

Anyway to be useful you would need the other end to support MPPP on
analogue lines too.

Just download the sources and build your own kernel.
It is much more flexible and not scary at all.
Just read the README file that comes with the kernel sources. Sooner or
later you will have to compile a kernel your self anyway.

I've used a dos utility called maxllf.exe to low level format in the past
with good results, you'll need to back up your data first, but it works if
you want a clean start, if on the other hand you have bad sectors or
something, get a new hardrive......... save yourself the grief

This is the catch. There are plenty of 2-D plotting packages, but
not too many free 3-D ones (that I know of, anyway). If you have
the money, there are three options I do know of:

1. IDL (www.rsinc.com)
2. Mathematica (www.wri.com)
3. Maple (www.maplesoft.com)

I think all 3 have linux versions, at least for Intel. You might
also be able to get something working with POVRay, but that's really
a CAD program, not a plotting program.

There's another free one by someone at Lawrence Berkeley Labs that's
not as advanced, but may work for you - it's sort of an IDL clone.
If you're interested, I'll try and get the info for you.

This was something that occured to me to.
Now I have installed SYBASE and MySQL. Both can be used with ODBC to and
this works a great deal faster.

MySQL is a RDBMS for the midrange and SYBASE for the high range. I use
delphi with both of them and it works great!!!

I wanted to play with changing my kernel but didn;t want to make my machine
unbootable. How do I change lilo.conf so that I can boot my old working
kernel?
Do I just duplicate the lines starting with "image=/vmlinuz"?
