Date: 22 Jul 1999 16:26:05 GMT
Hello,
We've 17 machines running RH 6.0 + Kernel 2.2.10. One of them is the NFS
server while the remainings are NFS clients. On shut down of some clients,
messages like this are displayed:
nfs_dentry_delete: auto/fort.66 : ino=2482182, count=2, nlink=1
nfs_dentry_delete: auto/fort.67 : ino=2482188, count=2, nlink=1
nfs_dentry_delete: auto/conv.dat : ino=2482179, count=2, nlink=1
The auto/fort.66, auto/fort.67 and auto/conv.dat are the users files.
I wonder why these messages are displayed, and if it's possible to disable
them if they're information only. Would anyone please advise?
Thank you very much.

ST Wong ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

Hi,
During linux installation, I had set my swap size (39 MB) , a little
more than the size of my RAM(32 MB). When I run StarOffice or Netscape
or any other large application, the swap size becomes 0( 'free' command)
. The concern is that once or twice, my native partition got jacked
after running these big applications.
I had to run 'fsck' to clear errors (inode inconsistencies) on my native
partition.
To be able to run these applications, I was thinking of increasing my
swap size.
Is there any way of increasing the swap size on my PC without
reinstallation.
Thanks

Did you include support for SCSI tapes in your customized kernel ?
If you're still using the original installation kernel, I don't
remember by heart if the support's there. So take the time to
recompile; IMHO, it's no problem to build the SCSI tape support (st.o)
as a module, but that may depend on your SCSI HA - e.g. with my
Symbios 8750 I configure basic SCSI support, HA and SCSI HD "fixed",
and tape, cdrom and generic (for my cdwriter) as modules.
Or do you simply miss the /dev entries ? So you either run a MAKEDEV
script or whatever it's called in RH 4.2 with the argument "std"
(for standard) or create the device nodes yourself : get the entries
for SCSI tape in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt and feed
the resp. arguments to "mknod". I can't be more specific as I don't
remember the resp. information either (sitting at work at my NT box),
I believe, however, that the major number is 9, char devices, 0 and 1
for st0 and st1 and 4 and 5 for nst0 and nst1 (the non-rewinding).

I use tcsh and in my ~/.login:

alias ll "ls -la | less"
These are even simpler.
Less seems to be the better pager because of the ability to scroll forward

Hello:
I have the linux-mandrake 6.0 running Samba in the SHARE mode. It has been
working fine for several weeks until today when I tried to copy a file from
my linux directory to my W98 client folder. A 2mb file took ten minutes.
Copying it back from the W98 pc to the linux box took about 2 seconds. I am
using windows explorer to do the coping. I can't think of anything I've
done lately to the samba or linux params. Re-booting both linux and W98
didn't help. Any ideas?

Subject: Strange problem with passwords in RedHat 6.0
Date: Thu, 22 Jul 1999 15:57:05 GMT
Hi,
I'm using RedHat 6.0 Kernel 2.2.5-15 on a SPARCserver 5. The installation
was downloaded from gd.tuwien.acat in vienna. After compiling the kernel for
IP masquerading, I've tried to install a mailserver. Sendmail worked fine
for the first, but was not very comfortable, when I was out of office. So I
decided to install the qpopper POP3 mailserver, because it seems to be one
of the best (the best?). Installation was very simple, and my first tests
(telent to server over pop3 port) were successful. But when a user tries to
connect, he always get he message wrong password. So I tried different
configurations (spcial-auth parametor for configure, -DAUTH in makefile) and
a lot of the stuff I found in FAQ's and the suggestions people (THANKS!!)
sent me via e-mail.
Getting frustrated by beeing unable to get it work in 10 days, I've tried to
use Cyrus IMAP server instead. Download, configuration, compile and install
were also very simple, the first test (telent.... see above) and the test
utility imtest shows me, that I'm on the right way. But when I tried to use
cyradm the program asked me for a user (I tried root) and a password (as you
guessed, tried the root-password). Got the message Wrong Password !! (...
pwcheck is running, tried several configuration options, bla,bla bla....)
It seems to me (correct me, if I'm wrong) that the pwcheck program compares
the password which has been entered in the mail-client with the one who is
in the /etc/shadow file ( I AM using shadow password file !!).
After adding some debug code (very simple printf commands) in
pwcheck_getspnam.c (also tried the pwcheck_getpwnam.c version, but the
passwords which will be compared are that different, so I think this is the
wrong way...) I got the following output:
getspnam-Debug:
Password from /etc/shadow : $1$T1gp7QPv$QeJ278puZM3B.zDIUA.Nk1
Password generated by crypt() : $1$T1gp7QPv$3gmKod9BErPhayuKWvmLV1
The crypted password from /etc/shadow is O.K. But the password which will be
generated from the plaintext password is different from the one in the
shadow file.
BUT WHY. Don't they use the same mechanism to decrypt passwords ?????
I would be very thankful for EVERY help I get. I'm stuck now, and do not
know what else to try....

I am not a lawyer. I don't even play one on TV. But I believe that one of
the reasons why this works is that the new conditions are a strict superset of
the X11 license conditions. (Where as in the example you gave, the new license
requirements are incompatible with the old terms.)
In fact, the X license actually explicitly gives the right to sublicense the
work, provided the original terms are adhered to in the new license.
I'm also wondering if the permission to modify applies to adding another
(compatible) license to the code, since it's not specifically prohibited.
There seems to be no problem with adding proprietary licenses to the code,
and I really don't see the difference between adding a license after the
source was compiled and adding a license after passing the code through
dual rot-13s. (Provided in both cases that the license doesn't conflict
with the original terms.)

I think you are right on the button here. I have a the same SMC card, and I
had an IRQ conflict that tanked the network connection. You may want to
fiddle with your device resources and make sure these two are not arguing.
The video card is a ATI RageII(Direct Draw) and RH6.0 -2.2.5-15 kernel.

None of which answers the question. As I indicated, I did that, and
found the 4.0 distro, but found that the stuff there was compiled for
"old" (at least from the DosLinux point of view) libs. Another poster on
this thread indicated that the latest Slackware is Glibc 2.0.7 based.
So, I re-iterate my point - is there any good source of Slackware-ish GLibc
2.1 compiled stuff?
Alternatively, can someone tell me which of the other major distros is now
Glibc 2.1 based? I think the latest Debian is, and since Debian files are
just 'ar' files, it should be relatively easy to pull it apart. RPM is
slightly harder to pull apart - which RPM-based distros are Glibc 2.1 based?

OK, I should have been more clear. In a true meritocracy, the opportunities
should be given to the more able, not the more wealthy. If poor people
do not have access to a reasonable education, opportunities will not come
their way regardless of their skills.
> There's no such thing

I tend to agree with you ( but this hasn't stopped politicians trying to
"artificially" create jobs ). My point is that a true meritocracy is
class-blind : the true meritocracy rewards individual merit, not social class
or race.

It does actually need the initialization, it just can't be a constant
initialization. Put

statusfp=stdout;

news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]...
For some strange reason, I quite frequently get the following error message
whenever I try to open emacs, or any application that involves opening a new
window for that matter:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authrized to connect to Server
emacs: Cannot connect to X server :0.0
Check the DISPLAY environment variable or using `-d'.
Also use the `xhost' program to verify that it is set to permit
connections from your machine.
I checked the DISPLAY environment variable and it is set to ":0.0". When
I try to use xhost I get more or less the same message:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
xhost: unable to open display ":0.0"
Why is this happening. I'm running Red Hat version 5.2, and this usually
occurs after I've already opened a few windows ( such as other emacs
windows, or netscape, or xplaycd etc. ). Please send me any information
that you can.
Ciao

Subject: Printing to multiple spooled printers
Date: Thu, 22 Jul 1999 17:53:58 GMT
Hi,
I'm running 3 printers off a Linux 2.2.6 server. I have an old
application which can be configured to either print directly to a port
(the port has to be set chmod 666 in order for all users to print) if
given the device name or if given another name it will dump its output
to that filename. Right now, its set up to print to /dev/lp0, /dev/lp1,
and /dev/lp2, and it works, but I want to get it to work using the
spooler. I've set up RedHat 6.0's "printtool" to map PRINTER0 to
/dev/lp0, PRINTER1 to /dev/lp1, etc, and if I issue the command "lpr
-PPRINTER0 < filename" it spools the file and prints it perfectly. The
problem is, I can't tell the program I'm using to send a command line;
it either dumps to a filename or a device. I've looked at the
/dev/printer device which hands its input to lpd, but as far as I can
tell, it only works to one printer, or through a filter (i need to be
able to manually specify which printer to send the output to). This
problem has left me stumped. It seems like more people that me need to
do something like this. Or am I just missing something? Thanks for any
help you can provide.
Nick
