the solution. When connecting directly to the computer from the cable

this (others due the wire swapping in the modem connector). My cable
modem requires such a cable when directly connected to the computer but
uses a standard cat5 cable when connected to a hub or switch.

You need to locate the kernel modules needed for the tape. Runing
'lsmod' before and after accessing the tape should help with this. If
you put the kernel modules on your rescue diskette along with insmod
(and other module utilities), you can manually insert the tape modules
and restore the tape. I did this with no problems.
It would be nice to have the rescue diskette automatically load the tape
modules, but I haven't figured out what is required for this.
It would be escpecially nice to have a "restore" diskette that
automatically loads the tape modules and runs a script to present the
user with menu options offering to format/partition/restore backup.
On AIX, mksysb creates bootable backups which offer to overwrite all
attached disk drives with the restored system. While our users have
accidently done this a few times, it just sets them back a day :-)

Subject: RedHat GUI install not support dvorak
Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 00:21:29 GMT
When I originally installed RedHat Linux 6.2 using the GUI mode, I was
disappointed. When I got to the point where the keyboard layout is
chosen, I was not presented with the dvorak keyboard layout option. I
circumvented this *defifiency* by installing RedHat using the text mode;
type "text" after inserting the installation floppy. During the text
mode installation process, when I get to the point where keyboard layout
is chosen, one of the choices in the menu is dvorak.
When RedHat Linux 7.0 was released, I was pretty confident that you guys
picked up on this defect in the GUI installation process. Lo and
behold, the same defect persists. When I choose the GUI installation
option, I'm not presented with the option to choose dvorak in the menu
for the keyboard layout. I stopped the installation process, and
restarted, and second time, I chose the text mode installation. As
expected, the dvorak keyboard layout option is present.
I don't know when you'll release the next version of RedHat Linux, but
please don't disappoint me the third time. The dvorak keyboard layout
option must be included in the GUI installation process, as it is in the
text mode installation process.

Subject: install on old laptop
Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 00:30:05 -0000
I have an old gateway laptop. It is 100 mhz, with 16 megs of ram, and I
want to install linux on it so that it might have some use again!!! The
only problem is that the sucker is soooooo old that it is one with the
swapable cdrom and floppy drive. My delima is that
1. If I boot with a linux floppy I cannot insert the cdrom without
removing the floppy drive. By removing the floppy drive I force the
computer to powerdown.
2. The bios has no option to boot from a cdrom.
is there a way to make the harddrive bootable into linux(similar to the
bootdisk before instal)? Or does anyone have a better alternative? I am
open to anything so throw it at me
thanks in advance to all that took the time to read this, and many more
thanks to the ones that respond.

There is no 6.2 kernel. The latest release series of kernels is 2.2x and
upcoming is 2.4.x which is currently in pre release tes mode.
Sounds like you didn't compile all the necessary stuff into your kernel. To
my knowledge linuxconf has nothing to do with the kernel itself. It
couldn't care less which kernel you are running. linuxconf is used to write
set up files for various services/devices etc.
Have fun.

Greetings all.
I'm going bonkers trying to get my Stylus 600 printer going on my SuSE
6.4 install. I can print by echoing to lp0, and I can print by using
cat to lp0, but it WON'T print using any other method. When I send
something to the printer by clicking on "Print" in Netscape, for
example, I get a "Connection Refused jobs queued, but cannot start
daemon". When I do "lpc status", I get a listing of my filters "ascii,
lp, lp-mono, raw" etc, and lp shows a job queued, but also shows "no
daemon present". I've gone through all my manuals, the SuSE on-line
docs, and just can't seem to make it print using lpr.
I'm confused.....! I've setup printers many times before, and I've never
run in to this.
Any deas?

I don't know if this will work, but give it a try.
It looks like Windows 98 partition is messed up.
Boot up with the Windows 98 floppy.
This may not work but remove the master boot record from the windows
partition.
A:> fdisk /mbr
Now transfer the Windows98 operating system onto the hard drive
A:> sys c:
Hopefully you can boot up in Windows98 but not in Linux.
If you can, boot with linux floppy and apply lilo.
If windows is really screwed up,
you might have to reinstall windows, then boot with linux floppy and apply
lilo.

`echo $1 | sed 's/-/:/' ` performed on blah - blah.txt results in:
blah : blah.txt
and what gets executed is therefore:
mv "blah - blah.txt" blah : blah.txt
when what you want is:
mv "blah - blah.txt" "blah : blah.txt"
One solution is:
j=`echo $i | sed 's/-/:/' `
mv "$i" "$j"
and there are most likely others. The intermediate variable j may be
ugly, but it does work.

Edit /etc/inittab. There should be a few lines like so:
1:123:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --noclear tty1
2:123:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
3:123:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3
4:123:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty4
5:123:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty5
6:123:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6
(SuSE; RedHat has "2345" not "123" but fugghedaboutit--it matters not for
our purposes.)
Comment out the lines starting with 5, 6, and 1. This reserves virtual
consoles 5, 6, and 1 for other things. Then, look in
/etc/X11/xdm/Xservers . (Warning: It may be elsewhere; "locate
Xservers" to make bloody well sure.) There should be a line in that file
that says
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt07
Change the 07 there to 01. If the line doesn't have the ":0 vt07" at
the end, put in ":0 vt01".
"init 1" followed by "init 3" (SuSE) or "init 5" (RedHat/Mandrake).
Yippee!
