Get gettext 0.10.35 from a gnu.org mirror. I would *STRONGLY* recommend
against using RPM on a slackware system. Save yourself the trouble and
compile things from the source. Reason being that most recent RPMs are
compiled against glibc2, and although slackware has runtime support for
glibc2, it is not best to rely on it.

I live in Ventura, in the Southern California area. Would someone
offer advice or information on what would be a good college in this
area to attend for training in C and a Unix-related curriculum?
That's what I'd really like to be doing: programming in C and
working as a system administrator, preferably in a linux
environment.
Or, is there a list or review of such colleges that I can look at?
Right now I'm leaning towards attending a local community college.
My educational objective is otherwise to obtain a two-year degree.
Funds are somewhat limited.
I'd be grateful for any (decent) advice offered.

I've never heard of such a beast, but I have heard of people writing
simple scripts to take the contents of the TRANS.TBL file and either
setting up an on-the-fly translation (this was with a virtual filesystem
in OS/2, though, not NT) or using it to rename the files after copying
them from the CD to the hard disk. You might want to look into these
options, assuming the CD has TRANS.TBL files.
You could also just temporarily move a CD onto the Linux box. Whatever
machine you gut for this would only be without its CD for a couple of
hours, even assuming you run into a few minor snags along the way.

Hi, you could fish out some of USR modems (including Linux-compatible;
check the model numbers) on PriceWatch and shopper.com for around $60-70.
But you do not really have to have a USR modem.

A couple of additional thoughts: 1. Are you overclocking? 2. Is it
unusually warm where your computer is? Either of these can cause the
problems you had. (My third idea, bad memory, has been suggested
already. I had bad memory once, which caused problems very similar to
yours, and I that is most likely your situation.)

Just edit the PATH line in /etc/profile to activate the change for all users.
/etc/ld.so.conf is a list of where shared libraries are stored. (This is
diffenent from path) You would edit this if some shared libraries were
installed into /usr/local/lib for example. Then you run ldconfig to rescan
these directories.

Last time I looked ALL colleges where C/Unix based.
In fact, most of computer science is C/Unix based.
In fact, when the Corp of Engineers bought their big new Cray Y-MP
supercomputer for the Waterways Experiment Station they sent around some
basic instructions on using it...guess what, it looked liked standard
bourne shell stuff!

How can I boot linux from a 2nd hardrive?
I install linux on a 486 and want to try it on my PII 350. I plug the linux

Any hint? I don't want to install LILO on the first HD (it's not mine).

Gary, Get the two year degree at a local college. Just go around the
local campus's and see which one has Linux machines running on their
lan. If they do at all, then look to see if there are any installed
for the students (in classrooms). If you only find one school with
Linux installed at all. Take that school and get to know the sysadmin.
If you find more than one school then take the school with the most
machines installed where students can get to them (and get to know the
sysadmin).
After you get the degree, get a job and work on a four year degree.
You have selected a field which will be short handed for another decade
atleast (depending on Y2K) and how hard it hits the system.
Remember it is 90% desire and 10% opportunity.

Subject: Multiple simultaneous NTSC inputs
Date: 11 Apr 1999 03:40:37 GMT
I'm in the planning phases of a project requiring me to be able to display the
input from at least 4 NTSC video sources on the screen, and record at least the
previous 5 minutes of footage from each source. I would like to use linux to do
this. Does anyone have any recomendations on how to proceed? Ideally, this
would run on a notebook, which means that ideally I could use pcmcia input
cards. I'm not afraid of a bit of programming to interface with the cards, so
long as they exist, and are the best (or at least a good) way to do this. I've
been thinking of using a data acquisition card or two, but I've only been able
to find support in linux for ones running at 10 Mhz, which just isn't enough
(not to mention that I'd need to decode the input on the fly).
Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Or buggy X servers like XF86_SVGA 3.3.3.1.
I have to hit reset every couple of weeks. They say it works fine on my HW.

Sounds like you have a big hard drive and you need to figure out the
number of sectors, heads and cylinders for your drive (Partition Magic
can tell you) and then pass them to Linux at boot time by giving LILO
the appropriate parameter. e.g. :
LILO: linux hda=1557,240,63
If this works, you need to put it in the append section of your
/etc/lilo.conf (see the man page for lilo.conf) and rerun /sbin/lilo.
Good luck!

Try:
info libc
info libg++
Assuming you have the correct packages installed.

Peace!

Subject: How to Upgrade to GCC 2.8.1?
Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1999 03:59:55 GMT
I am currently running Red Hat 5.0 with a 2.0.32 kernel and GCC
2.7.2.3 and am looking to upgrade to GCC 2.8.1 to get at least some
STL and template capabilities in a C++ compiler. I am very unsure on
how to go about this. I see several RPMs in various repositories
which are labelled GCC 2.8.1 but I'm sure there's more than just one
which is required to upgrade. All I want is the prebuilt binaries to
avoid any additional hassle.
Can anyone tell me exactly which RPMs are required? Any tips on
installation? Is it difficult? I've also heard about egcs. What is
it all about? Is that something I should be looking at as a C/C++
compiler instead?
Please post and e-mail any advice and thank you in advance.
