Hi,

I am using RH 6.1 and I have added two nameservers to my system
(in /etc/resolv.conf)

nameserver 129.x.y.z
nameserver 129.a.b.c

But when I try to ping a machine I get

# ping sunrise
hostname not found

(cannot remember the exact message now, had to reboot in NT to access
the newsgroup)

But if I ping the machine with its ip-number it works just fine.

I can also ping the nameservers.

How do I get my system up and running??

Thanks in advance
Torben Hoffmann

Thanks guys! I've already tried what Paul suggested and it didn't work,
but that maybe I got the syntax wrong. I'll try it again. Floyd is
right though: the best solution is to get the university sysadmin to
recognize that Linux will soon conquer the world!

Most distros come with pop3 servers. Make sure you've enabled pop3 in
inetd.conf, then killall -HUP inetd . That shoudl do it.

I doubt you'll even find any real support for anything prior to RH 5.2.

5.2 was the last really stable version; I've been running RH 6.0 with a
stock 2.2.13 kernel and a bunch of upgrades that has proven pretty
stable.

I'd go with the latest - 6.1 has been out for a while so there is a good
track record of changes and bugs.

RH 6.0 has a bad habit of installing X no matter what you pick. With
only 400 MB of space, you may not have enough room. Maybe they fixed
the install in 6.1.

The machine is perfectly adequate. NAT/filtering are pretty easy on the
CPU.

You can set up whatever services you need; just keep in mind that the
learning curve is steep and very, very, very different from the Windows
world.

Before you take the plunge, read up on cable modems. There has been
quite a bit of discussion; some don't work well with Linux and some ISPs
don't support linux at all.

BTW, I ran a 386 with 16 MB of ram, windows 95 and Wingate for a while
as my proxy server. It could deal with the load of 7 computers. The
damn thing took about 10 minutes to boot, but once wingate was up, it
had no problems handling the load. A 486 with Linux won't even break a
sweat.

Welcome to the world of Linux!

I hate to state the obvious, but a SERVER with NO BACKUP?

Tape drives are a lot cheaper than data or the time it would take to rig
something that may not work..

You can tarball the whole file system, but why not just get BRU and a
tape drive? Less than $750 US at today's prices.

Ah, I assume that you did not see the empty last line of the script in
the manual. The 'macdef' command defines a macro consisting of the lines
following the 'macdef' line. The macro definition ends when it
encounters an empty line.

Solution: Press return once (at least) at the end of the file to insert
an empty line.

You should ask your sysadmin for the ip numbers of your nameservers.
This is another way of doing it:

Say your domain is "tellabs.com". From a Unix account on a machine with
a working DNS server, give the command "dig tellabs.com ns". You will
then get something on the lines of

tellabs.com. 2D IN NS DNS.tellabs.com.
tellabs.com. 2D IN NS NS1.LCI.NET.

Look up the ip's of "NS1.LCI.NET" and "DNS.tellabs.com" using 'nslookup'
and use these as your nameservers.

Boot from a linux flop, remove all partitions with fdisk.
Boot from a win flop, and say 'FDISK /MBR'

Alternatively:
download a program from the site of you harddisk manufacturer that is able to
perform a low-level format.

Now your harddisk is clean, and you can install windows:
first create one or two partitions for windows using the windows FDISK.
Run windows setup

Now install Linux in the same way as you did before.
Important. Make sure that your harddisk is setup in LBA mode in your bios.
When not, lilo can't find your linux boot partions.
Explanation: the partition that contains your /boot directory (which contains
your kernel) must be below cylinder 1023. Every modern harddisk has many more
cylinders, so the cylinder number is translated by the bios in this way:
cyl'=cyl/N
head'=head*N
N= 2,4,8,... the smallest power of 2 that results in cyl' < 1023
This will work for harddisks up to 8.4 Gb

Succes,

They all have strengths and weaknesses. Since you have FreeBSD
experience, you'll probably find Slackware to be easier to move to.
Slackware (at least the last I looked) uses a BSD-style init rather
than the SysV init system that most of the others use.

Before ver. 7, Slackware had a bit smaller memory footprint than
RedHat, etc, so it worked well in lower-memory situations. This might
have changed with the latest version. I don't know.

Hi-

I just bought one last week, and it works fine
under RH6.1, with some caveats.

I tried all resolutions, and the best I could do was
800x600 in 24-bit resolution. I had to use Xconfigurator
to do it after installation (would not go into X automatically).
    "Custom" setup
"Extended SXuper VGA, 800x600@60 Hz, 640x480 @72 Hz"
    "50-90"
   "800x600" under the 24-bit column.

I tried all sorts of combinations, and that's the best I could do.

Linux does not recognize the internal modem (if you get
it to do so, I would appreciate help in this area).

I put in an Adaptec 1560 SCSI PCMCIA card with
a CD-writer hooked up to it, and for some reason the machine
wouldn't go into X anymore. I reran Xconfigurator, did all the
same settings, and then it worked.

Next, I put in a modem PCMCIA card, and then the
machine would not recognize both cards (the message
in dmesg was that the SCSI card couldn't get an IRQ when it
requested one.) So I went into the BIOS and disabled
the built-in CDROM. Then the machine would recognize
both cards, and the cd-writer. (The Windows side can see
both CD drives without any problems.)

I am presently trying to figure out why the modem card
is so slow...it is about 1/8th the speed that it should be...
kppp reports connection at 57600, but I get things like
"182 bytes/sec...200 bytes/sec" on web pages where
my other Linux box (with an external modem on the serial
port) reports "1.4Kb/sec...1.6 kb/sec".

Hope this helps, and I'm interested in hearing if you
learn anything more about the setup, because I will be
using this laptop for a while.

Hi-

There are several hard drive imaging utilities on
the web. I haven't tried any of them with Linux
in particular, but since their purpose is to copy
the image of one hard drive onto another, I
don't see why they would care about the contents
of the partitions.

Also, some hard drives (Maxtor, I'm thinking of
in particular) come with software that lets you
copy the image of one hard drive onto another.

HTH.

ive had it happen 2 or 4 time. all times caused by incorrectly configured or
incampatible hardware.
causes ive seen were: faulty FAST PAGE/EDO memory,
BIOS didnt support the size of hard disk being used.
installing it one one computer then moving the disk to another computer
(althought that was related to my second reason)

Try swapon (look it up in the man pages first).
