that is what the company literature says but who knows which games it will
or will not play yet. As for performance, that is not necessarily true
either.

Apache 1.3.6 allows virtuals without IP separate IP addresses.
Probably earlier versions as well.

For some reason now when I boot up I am getting a message stating
"Mount: can't find /proc in /etc/mtab or /etc/fstab" The partition is
there and the info is in the directory but I don't know what partition
it is (ie hdb10? hdb12?) and its not on my mount list from the
FileSystem Tool. I was wondering how to get it back on the list for
mounting.

Thanks for any help

We use the ISA version of those cards where I work (largely with SCO
UNIX), but I've also hooked it up successfully with Linux. The following
applies to the ISA version. It will probably be fairly similar with the
PCI (the ISA one allows you DIP switch settings; I'd imagine the PCI one
negotiates for its settings -- find them and it will help greatly later in
the process).

Firstly, your standard 2.2.5 kernel will be fine; no need for kernel
patches from outside sources. Enable "Extended dumb serial driver options"
in "Character Devices" in `make menuconfig`.

Next, edit the file /etc/rc.boot/0setserial. The format should be fairly
clear from the examples. Also, make sure you've created the devices
/dev/ttyS[xx] with mknod. Run ./0setserial to test to see if it's all
running correctly.

Write back if you're still having problems. See if you can find a manual
for the PC Com card in question, BTW. The old manuals didn't cover Linux;
the new ones do.

After you've installed that, you might want to investigate converting your

I'm sorry, but that message carried no useful content. Could you
please explain a little more about what you're trying to do, and post
again?

(To try to answer your question as literally as possible: yes, in
fact, one can put an array of 18 ints in the C source of the kernel,
compile it, and thus embed a list of 18 numbers in the operating
system. Though if you were going to do some kernel hacking, you'd
presumably know about C arrays. <shrug>)

I had a similar problem with an Aztech Sound Galaxy PnP card. The problem occurred
with x11amp. I solved it by running x11amp with the '-o 8' option to set the output
resolution to 8 bits instead of 16. Give it a try.

Add the line

export PATH=$PATH:/what/you/want

to your /etc/profile for a system-wide change, or in ~/.profile for a
change just for that user.

Subject: Building system to be a web server questions
Date: Thu, 15 Apr 1999 21:31:00 GMT

I am going to build a system that will be specifically used as a web server
running Linux (RedHat 5.1) and Apache (that comes with RedHat distribution).
I am anticipating approximately 1000 hits per day with heavy CGI (perl) usage
for database queries (mySQL).

Here is the system that I am considering putting together:

ATX motherboard w/Intel 430TX, 66MHz, Ultra-DMA
Pentium 233MHz w/128MB DIMM memory
Seagate 4.3GB hard drive (5400RPM)
NIC card, video on motherboard, floppy drive and CD-ROM

Not concerned with monitor, mouse or keyboard as this system will be
accessed through a switch box.

Is this system fast enough to support the type of web server usage I am
planning to support? The above system would cost around $600 if I buy
everything separately from my local Fry's electronics store.

I was considering going with a 100MHz motherboard and a AMD K-6/400MHz CPU,
but the motherboard did not have an Intel chipset (ALI Aladdin 5)...I have
had some flaky experiences when not using Intel CPUs and chipsets...can
anyone share their knowledge of AMD CPUs and non-Intel chipsets?

Also I was considering going SCSI for the hard drives, but I am not sure if
that would really help...that much...for the amount of $$$ SCSI drives cost
compared to IDE drives.

Thanks for any information/experiences you can pass along!

Scott

I use apt-get in Debian to update packages. Since our firewall has been
upgraded, I now need to go through a proxy server. What magic
incantations are required to tell apt-get to use a proxy? The man page
for apt-get has something cryptic, but I wondered if someone has an
example of the syntax of what I have to type ?

Hi there, just recycled an old PC with linux (486SX25)
Plan is just to use it as a web-browsing box. Idea being
it'll be faster than a windows machine could be.

However I now discover Netscape 4.x takes about 3 minutes
to load ! can anybody suggest a WWW browser with slightly
less overhead that'll cope with java and the like.

Oh and if you can tell me where I could find it that would
be nice too. Cheers.

you SUUURE about "better performance"? have you actually compared?
That doesn't make sense to me at all. Console games are tuned specifically
for that console. It wouldn't make sense for the developers to add
capabilities that could never be used, as far as they would know.
Besides which, the controllers are cool. You'd be better off with a used
"real" playstation.

dunon about the first two, but tomb raider was practically invented for the
playstation.

it has more potential than the Win95 GUI because it is so
configurable.

Questions:

1. Do most of you use it? If not why?
