Hi

I have a ATI Rage II 2MB VGA card and a ATI TV Tuner. I installed the
software on my system (Suse 6.1) and the TV tuner works, except for one
little thing. When I open the TV Tuner application in XWindows there is a
static bar about 5cm's high and the full width of the screen. It looks like
a badly tuned station. And it's not just in the application, but over the
whole screen. I can't get this to go away. I have upgrade Xwindows, but
still no joy.

The only reason why I still have Windoze on my system is to use my TV Tuner.
I really want to get this working.

Anyone???

Regards
Jasper

startx is meant to start an X session on the local machine. To run the X session
on the WinXX machine(s), make sure that xdm is running on the linux box (it
handles the x session requests/login). Then start one of the window managers
that come with Exceed (HWM,MWM). A popup windows should appear asking which
server you would like to host your X services. Select your Linux box (or enter
it's IP). The xdm on the Linux box should kick in with the login/passwd box.
Upon proper authentication, it will kickstart your X session. This is what I do
at work. Good Luck.

Subject: two problems
Date: Fri, 17 Sep 1999 06:54:26 -0400

Ok, i'll start with what i hope is the simplest problem first. Everytime
i try to mount my floppy drive the whole linux machine locks up and the
only way to recover from it is to power down then back up. I have tried
all the stuff listed in the howto's i can find at metalabs with no
success. Have tried various filetypes (vfat, msdos, ext2, etc) and two
different device drivers (the /dev/fd0 and /dev/fd0H1440). They all
result with the same problem. The disks are good and can be read by
Win9x on the same comp so i know there is nothing wrong with the drive
itself or the 20 or so disks i have tried to access. This one has me
totally lost but i am guessing that there is something that i am missing
somewhere.

The second problem. I leave my linux box online almost all the time but
occasionally it loses connect with my ISP for one reason or another. I
have it set up to automatically reconnect already but i have to endure
dynamic IPs so when i am out on the road i cant telnet into my machine
at home since it has a different IP. Is there a way to write a script or
something that will get the IP address from somewhere and email it to me
whenever it has to reconnect?

I am currently running RH6.0.

Many thanks in advance
Keith

Well, as far as I can tell, the Enlightenment panel applications sucks,
but I have never gotten it to swallow.

Never had any problems getting KDE's panel to swallow, and it doesn't
stop in the middle for no reason like the E panel does.

You cannot copyright a word. Linus owns the trademark on 'Linux'. A
trademark owner can stop you from using his trademark to sell goods of the
same class as those he uses his trademark on, but he cannot control any
other use of the mark.

It works for me. I know it can't figure out the difference betwen VFAT and
normal 8.3 MSDOS, for this reason I compile my kernel without support for
the 8.3 version. Works fine then.

It is a very very good possibil;ty specially since you do file and
printserving.
I suggest however to change your recommendation from RedHat to SuSE (but
thats a matter of taste, but SuSE handles the complete System V standard
and provides better support and better software with their distro).

But Let me give you some pointers:
First build your Linux server to act as a SambA server. I assume you
wish to use the standard client software from MicroSoft. SambA can
create a Logon server that looks and feels just like a NT server.
The Logon scripts are a bit tricky though, Novell Netware has great
logon scriping NT does'nt (standard) and Linux either. But I have made a
small perl script that enables you to map upon group memberships. So
that you can do the mapping of drives based upon group membership.

You can however only map root (Novell term) this SMB and Netbios
standard so you have to keep that in mind.

You also have to be awre that default you can't assign the way tyou can
with Netwares trustees. There is however a software package called Linux
Trustees that does. However I never tried that I'm not felling like
trying it either I like to keep my system Unix System V compliant :)

Make all user on in the Linux mache. You can either make a nice scripts
that tries reading a file that uses a fromat like this:
username password mail_alias group1 group2 group3 group4 group5 group6
group7 etc etc.
Unfortunatly I don't have this script anymore it got lost in my last
conversion. But if you have a lot of users I think I can help you build
one.

When you start migrating your data, it is adviceable that you make
directories with the same name of your netware volume and copy the data
in there.
Than start setting up rights etc based upon Unix wich matches closely to
Novell trustees or use the trustees packege.

And build a nice logon script. (You can reachme for this small piece of
software or advice on mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] )

I have done Netware migrations from 3.12 -> 4.11 from 3.12 -> NT and
from 3.12 to Unix/Linux several times and it's a bit of hardwork but
it's dowable.

Migrating from 3.12 to either 4.x or 5.x also causes some hassle when
you want to use the NDS properly.

P.S.
I don't know where you are in the world but if you need hands on
consultancy and help I'm also available.

Try looking at the Linux HOWTOs for installing multiple OSs.
I don't recall any specific to FreeBSD, but the HOWTOs should give you
enough information to get started. They will explain, for example,
that most BIOS want the boot sectors (/boot or / in linux) within the
first 1024 cylinders of the first or second drive (mounted as
primary).

You can share your Windows PC and then you can use the linux smbclient to
mount this share and then tar czvf your linux box to it (mind that you may
not tar /dev and /proc specially dev is very dangerous using tar!)
And then you have to back it up again. The disadvantage of this method is,
that you need to setup a linux system with samba support before you can
restore. The best solution is to build the tapestreamer into you Linuxbox and
use either tar or Arkeia or BRU2000 as the backup software.

But hence I know that the changes that WIndows crashes are a lot bigger than
that Linux crasheh :) Unfortuanatly you don't know that about the hardware.

You have to build a kernel with NTFS file system support or when the module is
already compiled by your distro you need to insert that ntfs mod with insmod.
Beware NTFS volumes are still read only!

Subject: Re: help with OEM internal IDE zip drive?

I'm no expert but I got my scsi zip to recognize both dos and linux zip disks.
You need to have two lines in the fstab, one for the ext2 file system and one for
vfat,i.e. dos, something like this.

/dev/hdd1 /mnt/zip ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/hdd4 /mnt/zipdos vfat user,noauto 0 0

When I set up mine because it is a scsi zip I use /dev/sda1 for Linux file system
and /dev/sda4 for dos formatted zipdisks. I also use different mount points so I
know what I have in the drive, dos or Linux but you don't have to. The zip disks
I use come preformated for dos so I have never set up a file system for them under
Linux but you need to repartition the disks for Linux. But you most likely have
already done this is you got it to work with an ext2 file system. Make sure that
you umount the disk before ejecting it.
Hope this helps

Not on mine you can't - it compains that an X server is already active
on dlsplay 0, or something ;-(

Subject: Can boot from disk-on-chip, but can't log in....

Following the directions in the Linux doc from M-systems I am able to
boot Linux 2.0.30 from the disk-on-chip Eval board. Ofcourse first I ran
under a HDD Linux and populated what I thought was a complete root file
system on he DOC. I also ran ldconfig with chroot /diskonchip to build
the ld.so.cache file.

Well, I am able to boot Linux from the DOC. Right up to the login
prompt. It even displays the hostname that I assigned in /etc/rc, which
is run from /etc/inittab.
/etc/inittab contains:

id:2:initdefault:
si::sysinit:/etc/rc
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 9600 tty1
2:23:respawn:/sbin/agetty 9600 tty2

and /etc/rc contains

#!/bin/sh
/bin/mount -av
/bin/hostname doc2000

I have copied over bash, made the links to sh, /bin/login, etc. I also
copied over libc.so, ld-linux.so, ld.so, ibtermcap, etc.

Ofcourse something must be right because /bin/hostname runs to set the
hostname and agetty is running or I wouldn't even get a prompt.

I get:

doc2000 login:

I type root and wait about 10 seconds and the login prompt appears
again.

What am I missing????

It is probablly something that would effect me even if it is a floppy
root fs.

Plus, is there a document anywhere that explains more detail about the
booting process and the steps it takes?
