Subject: Crisp2.2e segfaults under Slackware 7.0
Date: 24 Sep 2000 14:32:02 GMT
Hi,
I've become accustomed to the Brief clone Crisp, and use
the freely available version, crisp2.2e, available from, e.g.,
http://ftp.metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/apps/editors/terminal/
(the ftp. after the http:// is okay). It has a console version cr
as well as an X version xcr.
Running under Slackware 3.5, 3.6, and 4.0 I've had no trouble
with either version. After upgrading to 7.0 the console version
still works fine, but xcr segfaults immediately. I've tried
several servers, various XF86Config's, etc. No luck. And I made
sure the oldlibs packages were installed (the binaries are in a.out
format, and the sources don't compile easily).
Anyone had similar experiences? Know what's wrong? How to fix it?
Thanks,
John ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

Hi,
I see the following stanza in the lilo.conf file:
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.0.34-0.6.img
What is the meaning / significance in this line?
I have seen multiboot lilo.conf files where there is
only one stanza like this in the whole file. Not one
for each distribution stanza that one wants to multiboot.
Should there be an initrd statement for each distribution?
Is it optional?
Where does the initrd.img come from?
Thanks

Do you have a SCSI harddrive? you may need to use the initrd feature of
LILO:
image = /boot/vmlinuz
label = linux
root = /dev/sda7
initrd = /boot/initrd
In the BIOS, did you set an option like boot from SCSI drive first (or
swap IDE/SCSI, etc)? If so, you must tell that to LILO as well:
disk = /dev/sda
bios = 0x80
disk = /dev/hda
bios = 0x81
Alternative: use loadlin, my personal favourite as LILO is so intuitive
>-)
loadlin vmlinuz initrd=initrd root=/dev/hda7 ro

Mike,
There are at leat two manual pages you should read:
mkinitrd
conf.modules
initrd stand for initial ram disk. It is used to pre-load block device
modules (such as a SCSI module) which are needed to access the root file
system at boot time.
For example, I have set up a floppy that allows me to boot and access
the root file system on a SCSI zip disk using a SCSI controller card
that contains no bios. This allows me to use the zip diskette as a
rescue disk. I don't use this anymore as now I simply boot from a CD if
I need a rescue disk.
I think that these days that initrd in conjenction with
/etc/conf.modules is mostly used as a convenient way to load modules at
boot time.
You should be aware that this facility is not standard on all Linux
distributions. It is standard on Redhat but not on Slackware.

A personal observation here: The only time I was dumped back to the
LILO prompt was a misconfigured lilo.conf. I had the boot device as hda
instead of hda1.

It sounds like the drivers are missing from your kernel, or the modules
aren't loading for some reason. Your /etc/fstab file looks OK, although
I've not studied it in depth. Your easiest solution may be to download
a fresh kernel and recompile it, but you might also want to try to
figure out why the kernel modules aren't loading. Those should be
located in the /lib/modules/x.y.z/fs directory (where x.y.z is your
kernel version). They should be called hpfs.o for HPFS and vfat.o for
FAT (there's also a fat.o upon which vfat.o depends). Chances are that
these modules are present but for some reason they don't match your
kernel -- perhaps you're loading the wrong kernel for the modules, or
you somehow upgraded the modules without the kernel.

Greetings,
I've recently downloaded the jdk-118 from Blackdown and would like
to have it recognized in my environment path. The README says to insert
"export PATH=/jdk_118v1/bin:$PATH" into my PATH environmental variable.
I've been plugging that line into .bashrc and .bash_profile, restarted
bash and still no command line completion when typing java at the
command line. I'm trying to run Freenet and it needs to recognize that
there is a java installation on board. Where exactly do I feed this line
into and into what file in my home directory?

If you mean that you want it to no longer be the default, you can do that by
editing /etc/inittab, very carefully. Just replace the 5 with a 3 to
produce:
id:3:initdefault:
The option will still be there to boot into level 5 with 'linux 5' at the
LILO prompt, but by default it will boot into console.

Subject: Linux file burned onto CDR from Win98 machine
Date: Sun, 24 Sep 2000 15:27:54 GMT
I have a question concerning Linux files burned onto a CDR from a
Windows 98 machine.
Here's the convoluted story:
(1) I downloaded StarOffice 5.2 installation file from the Internet
using my friends wonderfully fast cable modem. His machine is a
Windows 95.
(2) I transferred the StarOffice file from his Windows 95 machine to my
Windows 98 laptop, using his local area network.
(3) I then transferred the StarOffice file from my laptop to my home
Windows 98 machine using my own local area network.
(4) My Windows 98 machine has a CDR that I would like to use to burn
the StarOffice file onto a blank CD. The software I want to use is the
Easy CD Creator 3.5 to burn the CD.
Will a Redhat Linux 6.2 machine be able to read this CD which has the
StarOffice installation file? Will there be translation problems
because it was moved from various Windows machine before going to a
Linux machine?
Thanx in advance.

Look up the ELKS project. Found somewhere near:

Does an operating system make sense on a 4004 anyway? :)

At least the Minix filesystem was used in the early kernels.

Hi,
Anyone using Krabber on redhat 6.2 ?
I compiled the application (version 0.4.4) with succes and the application
works untill I come to the point where I press the RUN button. Then always
the error "No space left on device" appears. This is obviously a bug in
the application (or completely wrong error message) since
3GB should be enough for one song (isn't it ?). I do have permission to
write
to the disk also.
Obviously these kind of error messages have no meaning at all. I rather
have no error message at all :-)
Anyone experienced this problem also and found a solution.

Your option is not to run RealPlayer at all or degrade your Redhat to an
ancient version.
I remember going to the www.real.com site, and reading their explaination
of why Realplayer 5.0 would not run on the
latest linux. They recommend upgrading to the latest version. I have
Realplayer 7.0 (not beta) and it works great.
