hi,
I got this error message in the second stage of installation for Mandrake
7.0. Apparently it had trouble loading the X. The message is below:
_x11Trans SocketUNIX Connect: Can't connect error no=111
_x11Trans SocketUNIX Connect: Can't connect error no=111
<Current Date> Gtk Warning Cannot open display : :O at /usr/bin
perl-install/mystk.pm line 139.
then it sends KILL signals to devices for a shutdown.
apparently, I need to replace the autoboot.bat file on the boot disk. The
problem is that there is no autoboot.bat under windows. If someone could
mail me a good disk image of the boot disk with the new autoboot.bat, that
would be great. my email is [EMAIL PROTECTED]
thanks

The jumpers were always correct. And yes, it's very weird that I can't even
boot a DOS/Win98 floppy. My floppy drive seems to read the disks (I hear
noise and see the drive light shine), but after a while it stops and it's
over.
If the BIOS detects the hard drives, does it also check the MBR/partition
table (not starting it, just checking)? Perhaps a bad installed LILO in the
MBR can cause problems when the BIOS checks the MBR... (and this can
influence the booting of floppys perhaps)? I don't know if this is the case,
but it looks like. However, it stays very weird for me.

That's another problem I have. I'm totally new to Linux (I used to be an
Amigan, but now Linux will probably conquer my heart :)) , and I've found
fdisk, but i'm not able to start it...

I already asked Red Hat for help. The future will tell... an interesting
problem though :))

Hello ...
I am using Mandrake 7 and I have an AOpen FM56-P (which I believe
is NOT a winmodem) ... the manufacturer says that it's not
Linux-compatible; however, when I went out to buy anAOpen FM 56K/ITU-2
ISA internal yesterday, the salesperson told me that he is using the
FM56-P on Mandrake 7, and it works fine for him!! ... he said he used
Lothar ... I tried it last night .. but still Lothar shows no modem
whatsoever ...
Has anyone done it successfully?? .. or do I need a more updated
Lothar (I have the Jan version)??
Thanks ...

I've had a fair amount of success with my new Linux installation, but
I'm running into a mysterious problem and I need to turn to a higher
authority (you people):
I'm running the helixcode desktop (from helixcode.com) which is
basically Sawmill on top of GNOME. However, this problem was present
before I installed the helixcode desktop (I was previously running the
GNOME/Enlightenment combination installed by default by my Redhat 6.1
distribution).
Here's what happens:
I'll do something innocuous like move the mouse away from the panel and
then the
panel stops responding. The unresponsiveness increases; at first I can
right-click on the desktop to get a menu, but trying to run anything
from there makes that stop working. I can't logout of GNOME (there's no
way to access the logout button), and so what I end up doing is pressing
CTRL-ALT-F1 to get some text on the screen, then CTRL-C to kill X. So
I'm back at a text prompt. If I try to run startx again it stops
loading at the gray screen that shows just before the "GNOME Desktop"
pretty window usually appears. I can hit CTRL-ALT-F1 and CTRL-C again
from here to get back to the text prompt, but there's no way for me to
get back into X from this account without rebooting the system.
However, if I logout of my normal account and log in as root, I can run
X without rebooting (root is also set up to use the helixcode desktop).
The same thing has happened to me as root,
although less frequently (this could just be because I'm not usually
logged in as root).
So this one's got me stumped; I don't know where to begin! Does anyone
have any ideas? Or even ideas on what steps I should take to more
effectively diagnose the problem?
Thanks,
Will Robinson

I am trying to set up my linux box in a MS-based environment (I don't
thing this is the problem as such). When I try to ping 127.16.0.2 (my
own adress) I get: Network is unreachable. If I ping anything else, I
get 100% packet loss. To me it looks as if the signal never reaches
the hardware. On the other hand does tcpdump produce quite reasonable
output if anywhere else in the network something goes on. It does also
produce output (
19:04:26.315761 arp who-has 129.168.0.3 tell
guenter.uke.uni-hamburg.de
) if I ping to another computer.
has anyone any idea what might be wrong or missing?

How about trying to give us a readout of `ifconfig -a`.

If you have another hard drive, ANYTHING, it doesn't matter, make that the
master drive and the Linux drive the secondary. DONE, it CANNOT boot anymore
without a loader on your new drive. Then kill it how you like.
The booting from the a: drive is all about the BIOS, maybe yours is messed
up? You can remove the battery for the BIOS for a few hours to reset it.
Write down the Hard drive parameters first.
-John
ps. incorrectly installed floppies, the old ones have jumpers so check yours,
can do strange things like you've mentioned.

I'm trying to move beyond RPM's and compile my own programs. Sometimes I
succeed, but usually not. When I don't, I usually can't even begin to figure out why.
How can I learn what I need to know to troubleshoot? I have no fear of editing files,
reading FAQ's, man pages or anything else necessary to solve problems. Any guidance

hi,
i'm not sure if my message got through last time. So, I am redoing it.
While in the second stage of installation of Linux Mandrake 7.0, I got this
message,
_x11Trans SocketUNIX Connect: Can't connect error no=111
_x11Trans SocketUNIX Connect: Can't connect error no=111
<Current Date> Gtk Warning Cannot open display : :O at /usr/bin
perl-install/mystk.pm line 139.
Apparently it was problem booting the X. I also found that I need to
update the autoboot.bat file because of my configuration. The problem is
that there is no autoboot.bat file in windows. Do I need linux to get it?
If anyone could send me a disk image updated with the autoboot.bat file,
that would be great. my email is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or you could suggest
a fix.

Yes, I answered this in an FAQ at:
http://faq.oreillynet.com/linux/FAQ_25_166.shtm
Basically, there are some conflicting commands in /etc/inputrc. To turn
off /etc/inputrc, you need to get rid of the INPUTRC variable set in
/etc/profile.

Remember, at boot time the LILO boot loader only uses the BIOS. So,
what disks are visible from the BIOS?

Accourding to the RedHat Linux Unleashed book, GNOME should support
fvwm2. The example .xinitrc
looks like:
panel &
background-properties --init &
keyboard-properties --init &
mouse-properties --init &
exec fvwm2 -f .fvwm2rc.gnome
If you do not want the panel you could delete that line. What I could
not find in the book was the
.fvwm2rc.gnome example that would be a Redhat supplied config file for
fvwm2.
