I am currently installing Redhat 5.2 on a 486DX2/33, everything has
installed fine - but when it tries to boot off the hardrive it hangs at
where the LILO: prompt should be at LI

If I boot off the install floppy and enter vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1
read-only at the boot: prompt, it boots off the hardrive fine.

Any reccomendations on how to fix this? It's only a 520mb drive (485
extended partition, and 32mb swap) so I doubt it suffers from the
too-many-cylenders problem.

The other thing is, this machine only has 10mb of physical RAM - but this
shouldn't be a problem?

"setfont" command works but not the "reset" and Ctrl+J... Thanks.

I've been having the same problem as the original poster. Thanks for
the links, I'll check them out. By the way, I have been trying to get
a printout of the linux users guide, from the linux doc. project. I
have tried both pdf and ps files, and the font sucks badly....it is
unreadable both on the screen and on the printout, like a cross
between english and chinese. WTF?
Maybe the other two sources wont be so bad.

Have a look at the documentation available at the linux documentation project
page

http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/linux.html

or search for linux at amazon.com, can't really recommend any of them as I
haven't read any of them but there are quite a few there these days.

I help a local ISP with some of their systems. Lately, the sysadmin and
I have been trying to get multiple domains to work with multiple
duplicate aliases. Here is what we want to do:

Domain xyz.com and domain abc.com (via the DNS MX entries) go to the
same machine (ie: Cwxyz.com and Cwabc.com are in the sendmail.cf)
however, both companies want a "sales@..." e-mail address. So, in the
/etc/aliase file I put:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:xyzguy
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:abcguy

However, when I do a "newaliases" is reports that there is a duplicate
aliases entry and only obeys one of them.

Are there any special characters I can put in the aliase file to take
care of this or some M4 mods that I can do in the .cf file? We're losing
customers to the NT guys down the street because of it.

rob, I'm using a courier running 230400 dte. Its about $250 though.
The rockwell externals will run 230400. (zoom, diamond, others probably)
I bought a lucent but they will not run 230400 dte yet. Only 115200.

An external is the safest bet.

Depending on your distribution on Linux, there can be several things in
/etc/ppp/options (indeed in the whole of /etc/ppp) which can upset
kppp. Start by renaming /etc/ppp to ppp.old, and make a new, empty
/etc/ppp directory.

Do you get the same error message when you tell KPPP to Query the Modem
?

Hi dagger

I've seen this before ... but ...memory parity error :))

Could be damaged boot record - I assume you don't have any DOS/FAT
partitions from your description - get Linux up and redo your LILO
installation with linuxconf (at the command line)

If that fails, it could be that you don't have an active partition, or maybe
you only have an extended partition without any primary partition which
would probably be an invalid configuration. With fdisk, you should be able
to activate your partition, but if you only have an extended partition, you
might have to reinstall from scratch using a primary partition instead.

One other possibility is that your hard disk has got more than 1023
cylinders even though its not that big - some early drives only have two
heads and over 1023 cyls - check in your C-MOS settings - if the drive is
using LBA, you may have that problem. (not that likely though)

Hope this helps

I just installed the 2.2.6 kernel on my machine and I can't seem to get
modules to work. I got the most up to date version of modutils and recompiled
with them inplace but this hasn't helped much.

I get these errors during boot:

kernel: Error seeking in /dev/kmem
kernel: Error adding kernel module table entry
kernel: kmod: waitpid(253,null,0) failed, returning -512

I've been working on this all day and am pretty much stumped. Any help would
be appretiated.

Thanks,
Steve.

Hi!

I have been setting up INN to run as a small news server for my home PC, so I
can pull a few groups in and read them at my lesure.

I've been trying to get this to work with nntpget, but unfortunatly my ISP has
disabled the NEWNEWS command, does this mean I have to pull in my ALL my ISP's
messages in each newsgroup? Is there a better program out there that I can use
instead of nntpget that will feed INN but will only download the last 100 or so
messages from my ISP?

BTW: I have tried KNEWS, and like it very much except I want to change the
default editor, when I run the "editres" program I don't see the
knews.nntpServer and editor variables anywhere?

Thanks

Are there many applications that will actually run on a Beowulf setup? When I
last checked they had to be specially written etc... Is there a site with a

Just "startx 2>/dev/null &" to send all those pesky X messages away and have a

Back about 2 weeks and 20 linux installations ago, I installed RedHat 5.2

hear the incoming message ICQ sound at the same time! I couldn't believe it
as that is one of my qualm's about windows. But now - I haven't been able
to do that again ever.
I now have SuSE 6.0 installed with Kernel 2.2.6 and my SB AWE64 working
pretty well - but x11amp once again monopolizes my sound. Does anybody know
how I can get it so other .wav sounds will play while x11amp is playing?

Except that some large subset of the earthlink outbound smtp servers
are on ORBS since they are essentially open relays. Not really open
to anyone, just anyone with a uunet or psi dialup account. As far as
I can tell, the earthlink dialup ip addresses are NOT listed on the
DUL at dul.maps.vix.com, but the earthlink main servers ARE listed on
ORBS at relays.orbs.org.

While installing Linux, I accidentally overwrote the beginning of my Windows
FAT32 partition! (Don't ask how.) Since I've only erased the very beginning,
is there a way I can recover what I haven't overwriten? I can grep through
/dev/hda and see that most of my data is still there. Ideally I would like to
recover everything, but I realize this may not be possible as I have screwed
myself pretty royaly here. :) Failing that, is there a way to restore
individual files from the FAT32 partition if I know their name?

I would really appreciate any help! Thanks very very very much!
