Subject: Gnome using DHCP client and hostname resolver problem using RH 6.2
Date: 23 Jun 2000 14:17:29 +0200

Hi

I have a problem with using a RH 6.2 client running Gnome environment,
and Enlightenment window manager and communicating with a Windows NT
DHCP server. On every login I get a Gnome warning panel saying:

Could not lookup Internet address for <my host>. This will prevent
gnome from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct the
problem by adding <my host> to the file: </etc/hosts>

               [Try again] [Continue]

However, all network services seems to work as the NIC/eth0 retrieves correct IP.
(print, news, smtp, http etc).

How can I avoid this annoying message without changing the hosts file?

FYI, I have replaced the pump call in the ifup/ifdown network-scripts
for the network service by

1. </etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup>:
   #    if /sbin/pump $PUMPARGS -i $DEVICE ; then
   #changed sverre above to below
    if /sbin/dhcpcd -D -H $DEVICE ; then

2. </etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifdown>:
#       pump -r -i ${DEVICE}
        /sbin/dhcpcd -k ${DEVICE}

Hence, the dynamically allocated IP address is stored in:
 </etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.info>

I have tried to update the auth calls in the </usr/bin/X11/startx>
script without any success.

   IP_ADDR=`ifconfig eth0|grep "inet addr"|awk '{print $2}'|cut -d : -f 2`

   xauth add ${IP_ADDR}${display} . $mcookie
   # xauth add `hostname -f`$display . $mcookie
   #xauth add `hostname`$display . $mcookie

   xinit $clientargs -- $server $display $serverargs

No other documentation or news articles seem to address how to solve
this problem.
   %wmosl1wi0305:~ {120} $ hostname -f
hostname: No address associated with name
   %wmosl1wi0305:~ {121} $ lpq
Warning: unable to get official name for local machine wmosl1wi0305
   no entries

Finally, a couple of other gnome configuration issues:

  1) Can the default startup applications that respawns be turned off
  (gmc, gmc file manager)

  2) Is the verification/confirmation action of the "Log out" action
on the Start menu configurable? (would like to change built-in
  action "Quit-Verify" to "QUIT").

Alternatively, can built-in actions be defined as either new main menu
entries or/and as an ICON on the menu bar?

Cheers Sverre

I am having trouble installing Storm Linux on a Sony Vaio. I keep on
getting this error message right at the end of the install:

warning: device 0x0307 exceeds 1024 cylinder limit
geo_comp_addr: Cylinder number 13 too big (1778>1023)

Any help? Needed for development. I could go and get redhat, but I was
wondering if anyone else had had this problem

Hello,
I want to find files with an pattern in a directory-tree,
per example all header-files with FNM_FL.

In SCO
'find . -name *.h -exec grep FNM_FL {}'
works.

To find the files:
  find . -regex .*\\.h -print
is ok.

But the format of exec-command ?

Take a look at the man pages for menufile and update-menus. Basically
what you have to do is create a entry in one of the following
directories (each overrides the one below it), then run update-menus

~/.menu/*
/etc/menu/*
/usr/lib/menu/*
/usr/lib/menu/default/*

I have installed it, but have not yet used it. Probably will do so
when I nuke the remaining traces of win98 from the system.

I think that you need to have the newest versions of the window
managers that were inluded on the distro disks, as they all require
the menu packages to be installed now. as for getting them to use both
the new system and their own menus, I haven't a clue yet. Might get a
chance to poke at it over the weekend however.

that's a good idea. mandrake seems to be really open to suggestions
from users right now. Possibly a post on oone of the mandrake mailing
lists could do the trick. They also have set up a website for comments
and improvements at http://linuxpole.com

see above about the menu directories and update-menus. The
documentation that was included in /usr/doc/menu* seemed to still be
debian specific and a bit outdated.

Almost exactly the same in Linux.

find . -name \*.h -exec grep -H "FNM_FL" {} \;

The \; at the end signifies the end of the exec statement. The * is
escaped so the shell doesn't try to expand it. HTH,

POSIX is "Portable Operating System Interface" with the X signifying
UniX influence. POSIX is a set of standards for building OS' and
applications, not an application itself. Several Unix shells are POSIX
compliant.
POSIX defines standards for everything from character sets to kernel
threading & queueing. =

When you telnet in log in as a standard user (ie *not* the root/superuser).
Once you are logged in via this then you can become root by using the
command:

su

which will ask for the root password.

If you have ssh installed you can use:

ssh -l root address.of.machine

If you don't have ssh or a normal user set up, *do so now*. It's far too
easy to break or crash a system if you run as root all the time.

Hi Ben ..

you have to tell apache what kind of file php3 is ..and that is done in
/etc/http/httpd.conf by out commenting the line

LoadModule php3_module modules/libphp3.so
and
AddModule mod_php3.c

but please be aware of the security problem you will get .. php3 is/was
quite easy to get through so look in the /etc/http/php3.ini

Thanks guys! We're getting closer.

To reiterate, I've gotten Corel to recognize my PnP ISA card. From the
Windows side of the net, no problem. From the Linux side, nothing exists,
and I can't get off-system. Navigator, for example, doesn't appear to even
see eth0. In order for even Windows Network Neighborhood to see anything, I
need to ifconfig manually (I'm sticking that into init.d) and I need to
initialize it though Corel's Control Center | Network.

What I want to have is Network Neighborhood' functionality upon bootup.

Corel support is virtually useless.

Anybody done this?

You can upgrade individual packages as needed. Most important
would be the gnome packages (including gmc, mc, and mcserver).
They were very buggy in RH6.0. Of course if you are not using
gnome, they are irrelevant.

But I would recommend upgrading to 6.2 by getting the 6.2
distribution and using the upgrade option. That is much simpler
than fooling with individual packages. You can download the
iso image and burn a CD if you have access to a fast internet
connection and a rw CD drive. Or you can buy the CD with
had copy documentation for about $30, or you can buy the
same CD from Cheapbytes for $.89 plus shipping. In my experience,
upgrading or installing from the CD is much the easiest option.

I've upgraded numerous systems, and I've yet to encounter a
significant problem.

I don't know what you are doing wrong, but I would advise
using the rpm packages. They are fairly simple to use
although they do require some care. The process of upgrading
a kernel is described in detail on a RedHat web page devoted
to the process. The most important thing is not to simply
replace the old kernel packages with the new. You need to
keep the old kernel around for a while to make sure you can
boot if something goes wrong. But see the web page.

I don't really know what is causing your problem, but you do
have to enable relaying for pop mail to work. This is handled
by the file /etc/mail/access. However, it doesn't sound as though
that is causing your problem.

The question is what IRQ the modem has landed on. The default
IRQ for com1 and com3 is 4. If your /dev/ttyS2 requires a
different IRQ (likely, if you have something on com1),
this value will need to be set using setserial.
Many Zoom modems allow choosing whether to set
jumpers or rely on PnP. If yours is one of these,
you will of course find life easier if you manually
jumper the modem. If, however, your modem is a
basic nothing-to-be-done-about-it PnP, you may
wish to set your hardware bios for "non-PnP OS", so
that the hardware is responsible for allocating your
PnP peripherals.

A good thing to read would be the serial how-to, which
can be found at:

Subject: Setting up a shellaccount server
Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 14:07:02 GMT

I am going to setup a RedHat 6.2 box as shellaccount server. (No I can't
use another distrubution so don't tell me that I should use another one,
I already know that), However...

There are a few things that I want about the box

* I don't want the shellaccount users to be abel to see the other
directory structure of the system. So when they do cd / they should cd
to their homedir. How do I do this ? I guess using chroot, reading the
man page did not helped me a lot.. So lets say .. from the moment my
user logs in (with ssh, telnet, whatever) I want to make sure that he
can't go out of his own homedir. (I guess thats being done wth chroot
right? well how :)? )

* I want to know which redhat packages should be removed immediatly. I
will probably reinstall most applications like apache using the source
of their latest stable version and a new kernel (2.2.15)

*Somebody told me about fake shells who don't allow the user to run
specific commands or .. I don't know a lot about these.. Maybe somebody
can provide me with more information about these ?! Maybe it doesn't
even exist at all .. whatever then :)

* I want to know about the huge security holes in Redhat :) I know that
redhat provides a few tools that allow normal users to for example
reboot the computer if these users are local users (behind the keyboard
of the hardware). I dislike this so things like these will be
uninstalled immediatly. But are their others like these ?

* A script for new users .. somebody know where I can get examples. I
know a little bit bash scripting and pretty well C so making changes to
this script should be no problem for me .. but an example would be more
then welcome.

* All the things that I forgot :) .. if you have tips for me .. tell me.
Please don't start flamewars about redhat which is probably not good for
shellaccounts and debian which rules or FreeBSD which I MUST MUST MUST
use for this application because I don't care about such posts... I
can't choose the distrubution myself.. my job is to configure the
animal. thats it!

If you want to know which shellaccount provider ..
it's http://www.netbox.nu (not finished at all of course)
