Well, it's a fact that the majority of Windows users cannot configure
their systems by themselves.
While you may be experienced in installing Windows, setting up
hardware and drivers, and configuring Windows applications; the fact
is, that you only find Windows `easy to use' because you are familiar
with it. If you would do a little recollection, I'm sure you would
realize that it was not always so.

This should boot to single user mode, then cd /etc/rc.d

I normally would not ask a question like this, but I am rather pressed
for time.
I used Nedit for linux to write my C++ code for a project. It looks
great in Nedit... it is colour coded, etc.
However, in VI, Emacs, and more importantly, on a printout, all of the
tabs are messed up.
I could painstakingly go into emacs or vi and change them to what they
are supposed to be, but is there a way i can do this with Nedit?
How can I make Nedit so that it retains smart indenting and syntax
highlighting, but doesn't cause these tab errors.
Thanks
Steve

Gee, no offense intended to anybody... but while this thread was kind of
cute for the first few hundred postings, it seems to be wearing a bit thin.
Is all the US vs. UK nonsense ever going to end (I thought this was settled
a few centuries ago, I didn't even realize we still didn't like each
other!)... or are people trying to set some kind of new "record" with this
thread?
At any rate, doesn't this discussion belong in a more political-oriented
forum? All of the different newsgroups that this is cross-posted to are
completely unnecessary...

Hello,
This is for a RH linux 5.2 system; when trying to install libpcap, i get
numerous errors which require me to force the uncompress and it also
breaks the tar pipe when the -v flag is set. After sloshing through the
install process, i still get numerous errors and programs won't recognize
that the library was installed.
Have any patches been released, or does anyone know how to fix this?
apparently it is something generic with all redhat systems.

Actually, f.ex., the *effective* taxes in Germany are in some cases
lower than those in the USA. Also, you are counting stuff like
obligatory health insurance in with the taxes, which is an extremely

I know about them, because unlike you (obviously), I read a lot, and
BTW, I stay up-to-date w/r/t news. I.e., I already realised that the
Soviet Union had collapsed in 1991, shortly after it had happened. You
haven't even yet!
BTW the Cuban missiles hadn't any effect whatsoever on the strategic
situation since SLBMs were already common at that time. The whole
thing looked more dangerous than it was.

*Shrug* I'm reading it from gnu.gcc.help and I think it's perfectly
appropriate to discuss POSIX (after all, legend has it RMS coined the
term! :) and SingleUNIX there. putenv() and char**environ _do_ exist in
GLIBC, after all.
Additionally, I don't think comp.lang.c means you're only talking about
ANSI/ISO C. If that's true, then what's the difference between
comp.lang.c and comp.std.c? If we were on the latter, I'd agree
whole-heartedly.
I'd expect comp.lang.c to conver all different sorts of C and lots of
different standards--and even non-standard (but common) usages.
That's one of the main reasons I don't read it anymore :).
Whatever. I think we've beaten this horse into a muddy pulp at this

I'm trying to build the latest x11amp. I've installed (and ldconig'ed)
gtk 1.1.14 with glib 1.1.14, and I rpm'ed in imlib 1.9.2.
at ./configure, everything proceeds until imlib detection, which fails.
config.log tells me that it cannot find gdk_imlib, which is most
certainly on my system. I've looked at the imlib-config script, but
can't really make out what I need to change.

Sendmail doesn't appear to be aware of your domain name. If you don't
have one you should use masquerading to set the outgoing envelope to
your email address. I presume you have the same username as the
username part of your email address?
If so, and your email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED], you should add
the following to your sendmail m4 file and rebuild sendmail.cf
MASQUERADE_AS(`your.isp.com')
FEATURE(`masquerade_envelope')
and all should be well.

It really doesn't matter what they come with because there usually at
least a couple of versions behind. Best thing to do would be to download
the window manager you want from the web so you can get the most current

What about the Window Maker window manager? It is one of the best. KDE
is too similar to Windows for me. And GNOME has a looooooooooooooong way

Don't do that, it is an obsolete form that isn't supported by the C standard
or POSIX. In standard C you must use getenv(), in POSIX.1 you can also use
extern char **environ; which is effectively a direct replacement for the
envp parameter.

Yes. I have three different compiled versions of 2.2.1 on my system.
Each works nicely...except...I have had nothing but problems with a
Creative/Ensonique AudioPCI 1371 soundcard. But then, it did not work
under 2.0.36 nor 2.2.0 either. My SB16 (non pnp) worked OK UNTIL I
upgraded to sndconfig-0.27 - but I then gave that card to my father,
expecting the AudioPCI 1371 to work...it IS listed in the supported list
and it is properly detected. sndconfig-0.27 screwed EVERYTHING
sound-related.
I ended up dumping the Creative/Ensonque and now hope to have better luck
with a SB16 ISA pnp. Anyone have THIS one and have it working nicely in
2.2.1 with sndconfig-0.27?

bash: ././quake2: No such file or directory
I also tried the following, but they all revealed similar error messages

I don't think this is a problem with the quake2 installation. I would be
