Thanks for th hint with the IRQ, unfortunately I don't think that was it. I
looked at the documentation concerning the modem, looked at the port settings
in Winwoze and everything is supposedly set to the default, I stoped short of
opening the computer to verify that that is true. Anyway, default is COM 2 with
IRQ3. I am using ttyS1 device which alos upposedly uses COM2 and IRQ3, thus
things on the Linux side and the Windoze side should be about the same.

Any other inf out there?

Thanks

I will agree strongly with "well engineered." My Inspiron 3000 has been
rugged, quiet, and perfectly reliable.

Regarding bleeding edge, that problem also exists with other laptop
manufacturers. The hardware is not built from commodity parts as are many
desktops, and worse there is considerable pressure to pack in more features,
longer battery life, lighter weight, ... thus lots of fiddling with the
internal architecture. The whole mainstream laptop industry could be called
bleeding edge. PCMCIA cards are another constant challenge to keep up with.

Nevertheless the Linux community rises to the occasion. I was recently
amazed at how little work it took to make my Inspiron run Linux RH6 with an
external SCSI hard drive holding the root directory. Didn't have to
recompile anything, and RH's auto configuration figured out all of the
hardware except for sound. (I did have to get a patched installer diskette
to get going, since the PCMCIA controller chip was not detected correctly.
Easy to find that patch, because Linux people share their tribulations and
triumphs :^) .)

Given the number of Inspirons that Dell sells, and the number of people
trying to make Linux work on them, I would not hesitate to buy one to use
with Linux. So maybe you can't run the most accelerated X server today, and
maybe the sound will require fiddling. Workarounds will appear early and in
a couple of months after a new model is around there will inevitably be
fuller support from newer kernels and drivers.

I used this to load the sblive module:
modprobe soundcore
insmod -f sblive

I commented out the stuff that loads sound.o in the rc.sysinit file, and
just added the 2 lines above to the rc.local file.

If you mean the internal one, its probably a winmodem. Its a winmodem on the
570's and 600's, so I assume its the same on yours, so your out of luck.

not sure what you need to do, but check out Tk (Tcl/Tk, Perl/Tk,
etc). There's a package called 'Visual Tk' that seems like the
visual basic of the linux/unix world...I guess, I've never really
seen Visual Basic and never want to.

I get the same thing when I shutdown. I have gnome loaded at startup and
it doesn't matter whether I use shutdown -h now from the terminal emulator
or pick shutdown from the options on the gnome logon screen. Everything
seems to shutdown fine but then it appears the kernel gets a command it
can't handle and it puts out what looks like a dump and then hangs. Have
you discovered the cure for this yet? JH

Date: 3 Jul 1999 00:21:57 GMT

I've got an embedded microprocessor project where I'll need to generate
my own diagnostic suite. I've been through the HOWTOs, but didn't
find anything about generating ROMmable code.

In the past, I've built GCC as a cross-compiler to generate application
code (ELF executables) to be invoked by a different unix than the one
where GCC was run, and it worked.

And of course I've built a working kernel on the host that would
run it.

But now I'm stuck configuring GCC to compile down to an "absolute"
or "kernel" image that I can make S-records (or whatever) out of and
send to a PROM programmer. Basically, I want to build ROMmable
code for my little microprocessor with GCC and its friends (another spoiled
Linux brat!), but don't know where to look for how to set GCC up that way.
Building a crosscompiler requires certain libraries and startup code
I don't have.

Pointers to existing docs would be most appreciated.

At some point the syntax must've changed because I used to do this:

$ smbmount "//$machine_name/c" $mount_point -I $host -U "$username" -P
"$password"

then I had to change to this:

$ smbmount "//$machine_name/c" "$password" -I $host -c "mount
$mount_point"

Subject: Help Compiling a SMP Kernel w/o 32MB MEM limit
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (asldjf)
Date: Sat, 03 Jul 1999 01:29:09 GMT

Hi,
I need to increase the memory dedicated to sybase ase. I have 1GB of ram and
would like to give at least half of it to sybase. So far all I can find is a
document saying to change the values of

#define _SHM_IDX_BITS  to 19
#define _SHM_ID_BITS  to 5
in the file .../linux/include/asm/shmparam.h
and in the file .../linux/include/asm/page.h change the value

#define __PAGE_OFFSET (0xC0000000) to (0x80000000)
Then give yourself swap space the size of amount of memory you would like to
share. Then recompile the kernel.

So after playing with linux for a few years now I have no choice but to build a
kernel. I have the lastest source 2.2.10 and seem to have everything
configured correctly.
The problem is, the kernel won't boot. lilo returns no problems, and when I
reboot I get to uncompressing kernel line and the computer automaticly reboots.
What am I missing? Did changing those files cause the problem? Is there any
other way around this linux only allowing 32MB of shared memory?
I can use any help you all may be able to provide. Web pages, etc... All I
seem to run into searching the web is the standard kernel HOWTO. Even if is
isn't a HOWTO it's based off of the HOWTO :)
I've already looked at
http://www.oconnell.net/cgi-bin/ez_view.pl?20+/var/www/digital-earth/Sybase_FAQ
/Q9.25.html+1+ff0000+memory#1b

but it seems to be missing something.

Thanks so much.
shane

Ok, made a mistake in the url for it. Really! Sorry!

This is the link you need to grab realplayerG2. Atleast this is the link

Oh, ESD sound. I didnt download it. As far as I have found out its the
sound system for gnome. You can see if its running by typeing in:

fuser -v /dev/dsp

It will list it there. Hopefully it willnot. Then you dont have to go
thru the hassle of killing it all the time.

Hey -

You need to go to Code Maturity Level Options, and say Yes to "Prompt
for development...." Then go to Network File Systems, and say Yes to
"NFS Server Support." This option is not available unless you choose
the experimental support. Technically, the NFS server in RH6 (the
kernel space on, not the user space one) is still experimental. That's
why you need to do this.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need any help.
