But VNC doesn't know what it is displaying, and X does. The VNC client
is not very smart and basically only knows how to display bitmaps. An X
server supports a much more sophisticated protocol.

I use VNC a lot, and like it, but X is usually faster, even without
compression.

Hello,
We have currently a local network at work with 5 PC's running Win98
I want to replace some of them with linux (Mandrake 8.0)
The question is how can the linux computers "see" the win98 boxes in the
same way windows see other PS's in "Netowork Neiberhood"
I know that they are accesed from "Local Network" in Konqueror but when I
klik on it tells me that it cannot find localhost.
There is no problem when I ping the other PC's
Thanks
Nick

Custom is always best. It lets *you* make the decisions. The distinction
between server and workstation is artificial on most home systems.

IIRC, that Compaq motherboard is the FIC PAG-2130, a microATX mobo. Has
Apollo MVP4 chipset and Trident Cyberblade video which cannot be turned
off. No AGP slot either. On-board sound which can be turned off.

If so, you can get Linux installed on that system, but you will have to use
XFree86-3.3.6 with the XF86_SVGA server. I had one of them before
XFree86-4 came out. Docs at xfree86.org _say_ that the video chip is
supported :)

I have one system based on a FIC mobo with the Apollo MVP4 chipset which
will not work with the 2.4.X kernel. Using RH-7.1 on it with a 2.2.19
kernel. And another box with a MSI K7T Pro 2A mobo with a hybridized KT133
chipset which doesn't work with a 2.2.X kernel and needs a 2.4.X kernel
optimized for the chipset.

Tried Star Office. Liked it. But that horrid desktop. Turns me off. Did
definitely turn off those less-techie staff I asked to try it. What we need,
chaps, is an MSOffice clone to ease the transition. When MS busted Wordperfect,
they arranged for MSWord to imitate Wordperfect. If they needed to make the
transition easy, then Star Office needs to do the same thing.

The aha 1480 cardbus card is not compatiable to with the anatec datachute-pci.
Datachute-pci only supports 16 bit cards. The 1480 is a 32 bit card.
I will have to see if the Raytoc Systems CBS51U cardbus reader is compatable,
according their page it auto detects between cardbus and 16 bit cards. Looks
like it uses the RL5C478 chipset.

Well, i'm sure if i wanted konqueror i'd have to upgrad to KDE 2.0 and I
already tried to upgrade kdelibs, kdenetwork, and some other kde package
but the kdenetwork package couldn't find the kdelibs even when i
specified the directory so i gave up on that idea. So i doubt attempting
konqueror would be worthy of my time. I'd probably have a hell of a time
with upgrading a 100 other packages before finishing all the dependency
requirements for the original program I wanted.

unless libjpeg.so.62 is included in the static version of Opera then it
won't either as it still doesn't solve the probelm of the missing
libjpeg.so.62 on m system. I got 60 but of course that's always the case,
always a few minor versions away from having what is needed.

story of linux's life ,really.

Subject: rsync with ssh and no password prompt
Date: Sat, 19 May 2001 21:39:01 -0230

Hello,

I have access to a remote Linux box with a faster processor than on my
own box so I compile my source code on the remote box as it is faster.
However when it comes to running the program it is not feasible to
run it on the remote box because transmitting graphics over the network
just takes up too much bandwidth and is very inefficient especially
since my computer is several miles away from the server so this is not
feasible. I thought I would use rsync so I could compile my code remotely
and running locally (once again because the computers are far apart NFS
or mount would not have been a solution besides I am not root on the
server).

Now comes the problem. I can use rsync from the command line to mirror
the directory containing the source code:

rsync -r username@remotehost:path/to/remte/directory/ local/direcoty

This works fine but every time I run it I am prompted for a password.
One solution of course is to embed the interactive program's output
in an expect script which reads the password from a file or from the
script itself but I would like to run the whole thing noninteractively
without using expect.

The --password-file is for rsync password and not for ssh passwords.
The remote server does not seem to be running rsync deamon on port 873
or any port for that matter so I use ssh's port 22.

Now how can I specify my ssh password?

Eventually I would like to add the command to my crontab so that
it can run every two seconds or so and I don't have to worry about
it. Perhaps it can even write to my terminal each time it finishes
copying the files to the local server so that I know when I
'm ready to run my application.

Thanks a lot and sorry for this e-mail being too long,

Neil

Well install it then, you berk. What is this, a stupidity contest?

PS ....

On my (debian 2.2) box, a search for libjpeg shows that I have
everything in spades. So just get yourself the debian source and

I'm attempting to network install Mandrake8 and RH7.1 on a CDrom less

load my 3C509 NIC.

I just installed RH7.0, but I can't upgrade since it won't load the
driver. I've tried several variations with options, but sinceI've never
needed to do them befoer, I'm not sure if I'm setting the options
correctly.

Whats the proper syntax for adding options for the NIC?

I guess I'm also open to installing another distro as long as I can do a
network install from floppy. I've been with RH since 4.2, so I'm kindof
used to it.

Howdy!

Well, the GEForce 2mx card is a nice one. I have one that Im using right
now. Let me give you a bird's eye view of what I did to get my card
working. I am using debian unstable with Xfree86 4.0.3. The later X is
very important to this discussion. With the GeForce card, one can use the
"nv" driver which comes with X in versions above X4.0.1 I think. This card
does 2d primarily and I use it with a Diamond Viper 770d which also uses the
nvidia chipset. The best way is to download the latest nvidia drivers from
www.nvidia.com and follow the links to support and then to Linux drivers.
You will find drivers in a lot of formats including tarball archives. I use
the tarballs along with the 2.4.4 kernel but you may not want to play there.

If you use an rpm-based distribution (redhat, suse, mandrake), there are
rpms there for download. I don't use rpm so someone else can comment on its
use. From there you just compile the drivers or install them and you get X
working nice and pretty by editing the /etc/X11XF86Config-4 file and
changing one occurence from "nv" to "nvidia".

If you are using a relatively recent distribution, you should be good to go.
RedHat 7.1, SuSE 7.1, mandrake version 8; or debian unstable. If not, you
may need to do a bit more work to get things working like downloading and
installing either rpm's of the later X for your particular distro or just
downloading the installer and tarballs from xfree86.org and doing the job
yourself.

Try to use a basic tool to setup X and not Xconfigurator if you can. I
think XConfigureblaster is a likely candidate in more than a few video
scrambles I have seen.

So, thats the recipe. I tend to think its pretty easy. I just install
debian potato and then immediately do an apt-get to unstable and get the
latest X and then apply the nvidia drivers after I compile a 2.4 series
kernel to take advantage of my athlon 1g thunderbird.
