What does a "cat /proc/filesystems" say about the available filesystems
?

If vfat is not in the list , check if there is a module for vfat
available, load it and try again.
If you gave neither vfat in your kernel nor as module, you have to
recompile your kernel.

Greetings;

I've been getting many, many erorrs on an RH62 box:

VFS: Disk change detected on device fd(2,0)
end_request: I/O error, dev 02:00 (floppy), sector 0

Can someone suggest the nature of these errors and the solution, please?

So there is not such thing that is easier than man pages or PhD

Most of us spell it 'harbor', but garglemonster evidently doesn't believe

Look in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit: there's a file named xinitrc which
gets executed, which specifies what wm gets loaded. Usually it's a
symlink to specific files found in the same directory: xinitrc.kde,
xinitrx.twm, etc.

Is it possible to declare main to return void instead of int? Using gcc
version 2.95.2 when I do:
void main()
{etc}
it appears that the compiler ignores the keyword void, it insists that
return be followed by type int.

I belive that ANSI/ISO C defines main as returning an int.
Linux expects main to return an int. Why do you want to
declare it as void?

Hello Carfield: Yes, you can copy, backup, and view the files from
another partition on the same hard disk. You must first have created
another partition with a program such as fdisk, or diskdruid and
possibly others depending on the distribution. You can then mount the
new partition under any directory you choose using the mount command,
such as mount /dev/hdax /directory . You will not need a special
viewer for the new partition, just treat the mounted partition as a new
directory and copy or edit as you want. If there is a serious problem
with the hard drive, you will probably still have problems with
recovery. You may want to consider just keeping floppy backups of your
personal data files, and configuration files, as well as using the
original installation cd for the operating system.

This is not the problem since I could mount C drive. The problem
is only with D drive.

   It looks to me like you may be using the wrong ip address for what
you are trying to do. IP address 197 is a dedicated ip you probably
want to be using 192.168 which is open to all users. If you have been
assigned ip 197 from a local provider and are trying to get those
computers up on the www then you probably need to contact the provider
to find out why that address is not activated.

Subject: bootdisk "OS not found"
Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 20:15:41 GMT

Trying to install Redhat 6.2 - downloaded generic.img
from ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/redhat-
6.2/alpha/images/ and copied to a floppy,
previously checked with scandisk, using
rawrite12.exe. The floppy does not boot saying
only "Operating System not found".

I am a Redhat newbie (converting from Slackware)
and I assume that I am taking the correct steps.

Any help much appreciated.

P.S. Does anyone still take the trouble to
download the source these days or should I just
shell out the cash for the CD?

Jon.

If the kernel does not see a keyboard , it will report it ("noisy cable")
and continue with bootup.
Remember: This is a multi tasking *multiuser* operating system
It doesn't matter how the users ( plural intensional ) get to it: the
keyboard & monitor attached to it, or through a telnet session or a serial
port or what ever else you may have.

I have two computers in my basement, a samba file server and a gateway.

They  don't have keyboards.
They don't have  monitors.
They don't  have  video cards.
They do however have  NICs.

In the bios of both machines, I have set them to "Halt on No errors". It's
usually under the first option in the bios.

Note the folllwing with X :

the X "Server" is the part that accesses the video card, and draws images
in it's video memory. it's the video driver.
The applications connect to an XServer , and request screen space to put
their data on.

At home I can connect to my samba server (using another linux computer ) and
run an xwindows program. All the program'sprocessing will be done on the
samba server, but the result ( the image to be shown ) will be processed and
rendered on my computer, where I am actually sitting. Just like telnet, only
with graphics.

If I were to start an "X Server" on my samba serve computer, it would not
work ( "No video card"!!).

PS : what are the error messages that you get ?

Looks ugly, but works quite simple: type (as root) hdparm -i /dev/yourdrive,
then you will get some Info's about your drive looking like this:

/dev/hda:

 Model=ST34310A, FwRev=3.07, SerialNo=7AX0QDT5
 Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs RotSpdTol>.5% }
 RawCHS=8354/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0
 BuffType=0(?), BuffSize=512kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=16
 DblWordIO=no, OldPIO=2, DMA=yes, OldDMA=2
 CurCHS=8354/16/63, CurSects=8420832, LBA=yes, LBAsects=8420832
 tDMA={min:120,rec:120}, DMA modes: mword0 mword1 mword2
 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, PIO modes: mode3 mode4
 UDMA modes: mode0 mode1 *mode2
 Drive Supports : ATA-1 ATA-2 ATA-3 ATA-4

For next, read carefully man hdparm.

The command for the drive shown above looks like that lovely worm:

 hdparm -d1aS242m16X66u1c3k1A1 /dev/hda

For example the d1 option means dma on, S242 means go sleep after a while
and so on.

With my two Seagate-drives, hdparm works good this way although I may have
forgotten something because I don't like toasted file-systems.

Hope it helps

`man hdparm` would be the best way.

You can enable dma transfers on your cd/dvd device, since these are
read-only. before you enable dma transfers on hdd's make a backup to a
remote, safe, place of all your important information, including any
customization that you hae done.

Hey Joseph,

ok I'm a little dense today, feels like a monday again even though I'm on my
third bottle of dew :-)

so what your saying is you don't have X installed on the samba server?
