I've had Rh 5.2 up and running for about five weeks. Got all my
hardware working (had to do some research and server upgrading). But I
cannot figure out how to check the amount of space left on my hard
drive. Is there a command like the DOS "dir" command that I can use.
How is this basic function accomplished with Linux.

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me solve this problem. I recently installed
the latest Gnome RPMs for RedHat. After doing so, I get the following
error when I try to start up enlightenment:
enlightenment: error in loading shared libraries
: undefined symbol: __register_frame_info
Can someone plese tell me know to fix this. I just upgraded to the latest
libc, I think it was libc-5.23-12-128 or something like that. Any help is
greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

Hi,
tcpdump is what I am looking for. While it doesn't tell you
literally that you are being pinged, you can tell from the difference
of the messages when you ping yourself from a remote host. Another
neat feature I noticed with tcpdump is that I can see which
computers on the our residence hall's network is using the network
at the moment.
Thanks,
Adrian

MSWordView is a program that understands the Microsoft Word 8
binary file format (Office97) and is able to convert Word
documents into HTML, which can then be read with a browser.
For further editing, I'd suggest getting a Word-to-LaTeX converter:

Subject: RH 5.2 network problem upgrading to Linux 2.2.x
Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 08:51:52 GMT
Hi,
I have upgraded a fairly stock RH 5.2 system to Linux 2.2.2 and 2.2.5.
The problem I have below occurs under both, but does not occur under
Linux 2.0.36. *All* packages have been successfully upgraded and
installed as described in Documentation/Changes. The only problem I
experience under 2.2.x is with this networking - everything else is
fine.
My problem is when I have connected to my ISP using PPP, I cannot get
any TCP/IP services to work, such as ftp, pop3 and http under Netscape.
Ftp under FileRunner says "opening connection to XYZ..." and times out
after about 2 minutes. Netscape reads "Contacted XYZ: waiting for
reply" and times out after a while (note it has successfully resolved
the hostname). I have dumped a telnet session to my mail account at my
ISP below. I have tried many destination sites and locations, so it is
not a problem with the sites being down. Name lookup and "ping" both
work perfectly. Here is a pop3 connection attempt which I terminated
after waiting for a response to the user command for 2 minutes.

I don't know why MSS is zero - it is not under 2.0.36 and whether this
is the problem.
Any suggestions as what might be wrong or what else to try next would be
greatly appreciated. I am at a loss as what to do next - I've been
trying to use 2.2.x for over 2 months, but have always been stumped by
these network problems. I'm not enough of a networking guru to figure
out what the problem might be.
Cheers,
Neil.

You don't want to whack out the XFree86-devel stuff. A *LOT* of software
is still distributed as source-only. Without the linking libs and header
files, this software will *NOT* compile.
XNest is a secondary server that pops up a window inside your current
session of equal or lower resolution. Just the thing to run Doom in 8 bit
graphics on a 16 or 24 bit display.

An understatement. Whack out the VGA16 xserver and XF86Setup will *NOT*
run. The VGA server is a least common denominator server for running
XF86Setup.

Leave the *standard* fonts and whack the ISO fonts unless you need them
for international word processing or something.

ACT uses the dBase III (dbf) fromat. I believe you can find a few
shareware/freeware products on Linux that support that, though being an
Oracle person nothing comes to mind :-). As to a contact manager vertical
app, I haven't seen any built on top of a database.

Subject: Stupid $PATH question that I am ashamed to ask, but having no pride, I

Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 09:12:04 GMT
Hi All,
I recently loaded kde on one of my machines and in the install
instructions for RedHat it said to make sure that /usr/local/bin was
in your path. I was logged in as root, (or else su'd, I forget) and
/usr/local/bin was not there. So thinking I'd take care of it for
everybody I added it to the PATH line in /etc/profile. When I logged
on as a regular user and echo'd $PATH I find that /usr/local/bin is
now in my path 3 separate times!!!! I removed it from /etc/profile
resourced it and now it only shows up twice. My .bash_profile only has
PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin. So seeing as how my /etc/profile does not
contain /usr/local/bin and my .bash_profile doesn't contain
/usr/local/bin, somewhere it is being added. In fact, /usr/local/bin
and /usr/X11R6/bin both appear twice. Once before and once after
$HOME/bin in my path so something is adding those two after my
.bash_profile is being read. The question, if you've made it this far
you've probably guessed by now is, WHERE!!! Could someone tell me
the sequence of how the PATH is set starting from boot-up? I know that
the system wide path is set in /etc/profile and the individual user
path is set in .bash_profile but obviously something else is involved
as I still cannot find where /usr/local/bin is being set from, either
the first time or the second time. I don't know how to use grep yet to
search all the files on my hard drive to find instances of
/usr/local/bin so if someone could help me out I would greatly
appeciate it. Thank you!!

I think you better find some time to add a new user to your system. It is
dangerous to login as root all the time as you may end up
damaging/deleting vital files, or running Trojan horses which could
exploit your super-user status. Create a new user by:
adduser fred
as root it takes all of 10 seconds to do.
