You are probably going to have to build samba-2.2.0.

Is there an easy way for a program to obtain a reading on the loudness
level of audio coming into the microphone? (This would be something I
would want if I wanted to start an application if someone slams the door
in the room.)
The real reason why I need this is to ascertain which of my hundreds of
old MusicMatch mp3 rips fail to contain sound. (Yes, older versions
randomly failed on individual tracks).) I am planning to play them, and
flag those for which my microphone cannot pick up enough volume.

You're confused - it's not true that the juxtaposition of the
integer quotient and modulo is equal to a floating point division,
i.e.,
[(int)A / (int)B].[(int)A % (int)B] != (double)A / (double)B
as I suspect you are thinking.
Take a simple case: (double)5/(double)2 = 2.5
But [5/2].[5%2] = 2.1

I use Netscape Messenger as my mail reader. Any text file
attachments emailed to me appear as inline text below the
message. How can I turn this off? I prefer to have the
attachments remain attachments (rather than inline text).
Thanks in advance for your help.

Check your default route. It is probably set to the 56k connection.

Whoops, sorry.
"(double)X" is C language for treating an integer variable X
as a floating point number (in double-precision).

To get around this problem, you are going to have to change your default route
so that the ADSL modem is prefered as the default route. If you take a look
at your routing table: "/sbin/route -n" you will see two routes. You need to
identify the route for the 56k modem (most likely the ppp connection) and
remove it.
This should stop you from having the data routed through your 56kb modem. The
other choice is to leave the route in there for the ppp connection but give it
a higher metric.

Subject: Kernel 2.4.4 & National Language Support
Date: Fri, 25 May 2001 00:27:04 GMT
My understanding is probably off here but here goes....
Has nls support changed in some way from earlier kernels? I used to
ignore the nls section of the build, but with 2.4.4 I get an error in
dmesg when a modprobe can't find two of the language modules,
nls_iso8559-1.o and nls_cp437.o
I can make the error go away by compiling these two modules along with
the new kernel, after which lsmod shows them both to be loaded (which
I don't perticularly want).
What's most confusing to me is that they don't seem to be called from
any of the boot scripts (eg /etc/rc.d/rc.modules). Is the kernel
itself calling for the module load? Sort of takes away the point in
having modules if it is, doesn't it?

After looking a bit further into this, I found some docs that say that
bash does not process non-integer values. So I turned to bc.
It works the way I want, but I still hope to be able to accomplish
these computations within the shell.
If anybody can duplicate this script without any external programs I
would be interested in seeing it.

Where did I go wrong?
I have a program which must be run as root, in order to read certain files on
startup. But I want the ability for a user to start the program. When root
calls the startup script, all is fine. But when a user calls the startup
script, I get "perm denied" on reading certain files.
so, I made a new script to call the startup script. While logged in as root, I
did: chmod +s script
and now my script is: -rwsrwsr--
the owner is root
but when the user calls the script, I get the same perms denied as before.
I though that since root owns the script, then setting -rwsrwsr-- would allow
a user (of the appropriate group) to call the script which calls the startup
script as if he were root.

You must read samples from the audio device and then perform an moving average
of the square of the amplitude, over a moving window of samples of some size.
Use 10.0 * log10(average) to obtain a relative decibel scale, taking care
when average is zero, of course. ;)

What do you do with the contents of a letter after opening
it? Depends on what's inside.
You've already indicated you know how to unpack it, so
that can't be the problem.
So...what did you download?

You have integers A and B and want the quotient when they are
divided as floating point numbers. You can use the following
to calculate the fractional part digit by digit:
The desired answer (double)A /(double)B can be expressed as:
d0 + d1*10^(-1) + d2*10^(-2) + d3*10^(-3) + ...
So:
d0 = A / B
remainder = A % B
d1 = (10 * remainder) / B
remainder = (10 * remainder) % B
d2 = (10 * remainder) / B
remainder = (10 * remainder) % B
.
.
.
Keep going until the remainder is zero or until you get the
number of digits you want.

Charles

Your user who is not a member of the group owning that file only has read

root permission
