SuSE 6.0 (which was just released in its English version very recently) is
supposedly 2.2 compliant (all packages are the proper version to run 2.2).
I don't believe it has the 2.2.x kernels included (still has a -preX
version), but it should be as simple as downloading the latest 2.2.x and
installing that without any other major changes.

Last I heard, RedHat 6.0 will not be out for a while. I don't know about
debian, or any others.

I run genhdlist to generate the new hdlist for Red Hat 5.2 but I
encountered an segmentation fault error and the probelm got
terminated. The genhdlist I used is contained in Red Hat 5.2 CDROM

to fix it? Thanks.

Thanks for the response. It would have been nicer if you had the secret

Iomega/ftape problems.

Hi everyone,

Recently I tried to install Linux on my laptop (Dell Latitude CPi) I had
some difficulty setting up the GUI for it. First I tried SUSE 3.2, and
eventually I got it working, the mouse (touchpad) too. Then I screwed my
system up, so I decided to put RH 5.2 on it (it's more recent a
distribution, anyway). I got it working, except the mouse. With SUSE it
worked straight away, using /dev/psaux for the touchpad. Both the GUI (in
/etc/XF86Config and in terminal mode with gpm. The same isn't true with my
Red Hat installation, neither mode recognises the built in mouse. If I
stick in a serial mouse, and use /dev/ttyS0, it works, but not with the
internal one.
I tried to make several /dev/psaux devices with different minor dev.
numbers, none worked (mknod -m 660 /dev/psaux 10 0 ->1, 2, 3, ...). And I
couldn't work out wath major/minor numbers I should use.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? It's getting really annoying.
Since I have no access to news groups during the week, I'd really
appreciate a copy to my mail box too ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).

TIA,
Akos

What I meant was that help gave me an overview of the available
commands. Of which there are, of course, a lot less than in linux, so
it wasn't a big job figuring out them all.

Me too - I was doing an install from scratch, and wanted a couple of
MSDOS partitions amongst the Linux. I could write a boot floppy, but
not the MBR. After a bit of playing around I found that if I converted
the MSDOS to Linux partitions, it installed the MBR.

The MSDOS partitions were, at the time of trying to write the MBR,
unformatted, don't know if that is relevant yet.

figure out what directories from / are on the root partition.

cd to the mirror partition, and except for /proc (don't copy that,
but make a mountpoint for it)

cp -a --one-file-system /etc /dev /root <etc> .

That should do it.

Read the PPP-HOWTO. /usr/doc/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO It explains how the whole
process of PPP works through Linux applications and configuration files and
such. If you don't have them on your filesystem, you can search the web, all
the howto's are available online in HTML at:

http://www.linuxnow.com/

FLAME ON... (to quote)

The User interface that you describe as a "Black-Box" is not a black box at
all. The source code for the program is available, and there is documentation
as well. The configuration files it uses are in plain text, and the options
and arguments in them are explained in the man pages for "pppd". (pppd source
code and the kernel source code is available too. As are their man pages for
"chat", "bash", and their source...)
If you go and look at your /var/log/messages file you will be able to see where
the problem occurs in the ppp connection.

That "black-box" interface was created precisely because so many newbie-users
who wanted to use the geeky-OS whined about having to read and understand open
man pages describing open source applications that they didn't pay a penny
for. They are not worse than useless, I have used them to connect to ISP's
and my office Remote Access Server from a laptop I set up with RH5.2 w/ no
modifications at all. Could it be that Drexel University's Access Server or
your ISP is using a not too common configuration???

Free Software isn't FREE, you have to work to get over the learning curve, it
is DIY.
RTFM...

Really, you can build executables from source under Red Hat just as you can
with any other distribution. The RPMs are convenient, but you aren't forced
to use them (as far as I know).

I don't know if this will help or not, but it's worth a shot.

I have a motherboard with the SiS 6326 and lost quite a few hairs until
I RTFM'd. 1st, you can not use XF86Setup or XConfigurator to set up
this chip as it doesn't support the VGA server. You must use xf86setup,
the command line setup.

I use XFree86 3.3.3 which has the support for the 6326 included. Step
through the configuration answering the questions as appropriate and
choose the correct chip. This will run the SVGA server.

After setting everything up, I had to go into the xf86setup
configuration file and turn off acceleration. After doing this
everything works fine, but I can only get 16 bit colour at 1024x768,
which is fine. With acceleration on, I had all sorts of weird video
effects including screen corruption. At 16 bit colour with no
acceleration, everything works fine.

Not sure if this will work with the 530, but worth a shot I'd guess.

Run the WM prefs executable from an xterm window, which will create an app
icon at the bottom of your screen. Drag it over to the bottom of your stack
of doc apps, and it should attach.
