Did you install the kernel-headers-xx.rpm file? And did you do an 'make
mrproper' before the 'make config' (BTW, since you've run make config, Do
a make menuconfig and save your config file to an alternate config file
so that you can reload it after you do the make mrproper, which sets all
your links and config file to a default).

I am trying to setup my linux box so I am able to log into a netware server
over a VPN connection.

I have successfully established the VPN connection with the use of PoPToP
using TCP/IP, however,
I am unable to log into my server without IPX. I have heard that I need to
setup a RIP/SAP router, and
that ipxripd might be a good choice of ones to use, however I have not had
any luck doing so.

If anyone has done this before, or has any suggestions on how to do it, some
help would be appreciated.

The client is a Win98 machine that connects to a Redhat 6.1 PoPToP VPN
server, and then hopefully,
eventually, a Netware 4.11 server...

Thanks in advance.

Before I do any of that, I've got my own project to start coding. I

I recently upgraded my slackware kernel from v.2.0.34 to v.2.2.9.
I also upgraded to pppd v.2.3.4.

I've been trying in the worst way to start pppd as a user other
than root. Thus far I've been unsuccessful. With the old kernel
and the old pppd version (2.2), there was never a problem with
anyone starting pppd. Now, only root can start it.

Here's the message that appears when a non-root user starts pppd:

using the name option requires root privilege

I only upgraded to a newer version of pppd because of an
incompatibility between the old version and the new kernel.

I tried changing and adding parameters in /etc/ppp/options, to
no avail.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

Our church has a 486 with a 500 meg hard disk that was donated. All os
have been deleted from the machine. I can't use Windows on it and while
I could install DOS and use Dos-based Wordperfect and Lotus I'd rather
use linux if it would be practical. My other problems are that this
machine has no CD. I probably could install a modem but haven't got a
browser -- I'm not sure but I might be able to find an old Dos version
of Procom Plus but I'm not at all sure about that. I was wondering if an
older version of linux would be a way to start. Any recommendations.

Do not recompile the kernel. It won't affect the sound driver for the sound
blaster live. In your /etc/conf.modules file, add these two lines. The order
of the lines doesn't matter.
pre-install emu10k1 insmod soundcore
post-remove emu10k1 rmmod soundcore

You can then reboot and you should have sound.
This should set it up so that the sound card driver is loaded each time you
boot up (so you don't have to manually do it every time)

Emachines are possible, but I've had troubles with the display. The

It was faster running in windows than in linux for some reason.

I'm looking to be able to stream some audio out through a modem
to somebody listening at the other end of the phone line.

Now, I understand that most modems (particularly ones from 3Com/USR)
accept ADPCM-compressed sound files that can be decompressed
and played through the phone line.

So first question: What wav-to-adpcm converter do you recommend?

Now, in implementing this, I can figure out the appropriate AT commands to
allow me to send the file from the modem's end; but as a general unix newbie
I'm wondering if streaming the adpcm file to the modem would just be a
matter of piping the file to the appropriate port, in the same way that I
would send the AT commands out. Linux and FreeBSD suggestions welcomed.
