I put some detector code in my firewall script and use a variable for either
IPFWADM or IPFWADM-WRAPPER.
My fragment looks like this:
if [ -e /proc/net/ipfw-chains ] # detect IPCHAINS in use
then
set IPFW = "/usr/sbin/ipfwadm-wrapper"
else
set IPFW = "/sbin/ipfwadm"
fi
Then you can use $IPFW in the rest of your firewall script.

You could not choose anything but a few cars, but you could not even
choose them in the way "choice" is usually understood. Even if you
had saved up for 10 years, you would typically have to wait another 10
years till the car would be ready for delivery, unless you had very
good connections.

That's true. Although with 600dpi laser printers, hinting won't
affect the quality of hardcopy output, unless it uses extremely small
type. I would say that the same is beginning to be true of screen
displays, esp. if you use anti-aliased fonts.
I must confess that I've never really understood how hinting works,
and why 'hints' such as 'this bit and that bit should be the same
width' couldn't be generated automatically.
But for low resolutions, you could get round the hinting problem by
having a large set of prerendered bitmaps of the font at 10x10 pixels,
11x11 pixels, and so on. You could generate these straight from the
proprietary outlines (which include hinting), so they would look
good. And of course, they would be public domain. Then for small
font sizes, you could pick the nearest bitmap, and scale it up or down
a tiny amount. For larger sizes, where hinting isn't important, you
could render straight from outlines.

This is a pretty weak argument...
so I'll ask again, why would he shoot _you_? would you be physically attacking
him? after all, you are no threat to his freedom, that is something
govts do. (threaten freedom)
sure makes me wonder if you are projecting a little.

I'm not familiar with this particular printer, but if it's a
"WinPrinter" you're out of luck. They're designed to use the Windows
graphics driver as an integral part of their printing process, and
since they don't publish the interface it's impossible for programmers
to make them work with any other OS.
You might look at the Hardware-HOWTO at www.linux.org and
sunsite.unc.edu to see if your printer is usable with Linux.

This may be a silly question, but how can I get my RedHat5.2 dist. to

my old Debian dist., but doesn't under RedHat. Also, when I hit Ctrl-g,

No. There would be NO shell. That is the whole issue.
A shell as we traditionally think would not exist.
Sure you could use 'csh' or 'bash', but other services,
those associate with a 'multi-user' enviroment would be
gone. (non-existant, not available)

Let's skip the politics for a moment, if we can't.
Let's skip KDE and just say any GUI or command line type
interface for the moment. The let's consider that there is NO
UID.

Okay.
A computer system with
---
the ability to run background tasks.
a TCP/IP stack and therefore can access the internet.
an open interface for third-party developers like /dev.
has a resonable interface that can support third-party extensions.
has some sort of compatibility,
so that older program can run (forever).
is configurable via simple, yet easy to use interface
that is well documented.
can accomplish tasks (from running my toaster to
nth degree matrix multiplication.
===
now for the security part:
machine #1 would be
---
secured for remote access from a single interface,
possibly telnet.
insecure from the console, therefore walking upto
it would allow you INSTANT access.
machine #2 would be
---
impossible to access remotely, and would require
installation of source code and/or new binaries.
insecure from the console, therefore walking upto
it would allow you INSTANT access.
Do you need more information?

This is a dead or life situation.
I am going to explain what happened to me, because I REALLY need help.
I have changed a file, that contains info about the window-managers.
Now, every time i run linux, XDM autostarts, i enter the username(root
is the only user), and the password. But there must be an error some
whera, because, no window manager run.
And I am taken again to enter the name and password.
How can I solve this. If i haven't XDM enabled, I could edit the file
again from the console.
My second question is, how can I turn off LILO?
Please I really need help.

mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom -o remount

Oh well, looks like a reboot is coming on.

Well, here's the two minute basic intro:
To edit your own crontab (and you probably should practice on your local
crontab before trying to edit the root crontab), run
crontab -e
(make sure you've set your EDITOR environment variable to something
sensible--my distribution's crontab seems to default to ae as an editor

will cause myscript to run at 6:30 AM on Tuesday, May 1st (if such a time
ever rolls around). You can replace any fields with asterisks to mean that
any value will do, so to make myscript run every monday at 1AM, you would
enter
00 1 * * mon myscript
Then, just save the file, exit the editor and your crontab will be
installed. Each field is separated by one or more whitespace characters,
so "80 1 * * mone myscript" is equivalent to the above.
You will also want to (re-)read the man page for crontab(1) and crontab(5)
(the more important of the two) in addition to cron(8). The crontab docs
provide more information on actually setting up the events themselves, as
opposed to the daemon. There's more to it than this, but it's probably 90%
of what you need to know for 90% of all cases.

Hi Andy, sorry that I can't help You with the cdrecord problem, but how about
trying cdrdao instead?
I used to rip audiotracks by
cdparanoia 1- data.wav
cdrdao read-toc --device /dev/sg1 cd.toc
and then,
cdrdao write --device /dev/sg1 cd.toc
You have the possibility to edit the tocfile before burning. See the manual (man
cdrdao) for further information about the devices, the drivers etc.
This only works if Your drive is able to write disk-at-once.

That's not something I'd bet on. It's also not something to bet on in
the real world: you're trusting not only the Apache team with your
security, you're also trusting every CGI that's run on the system.
A firewall should run as few services as possible (mine run none: login
is through console only, for example).

Best bet is to use Partition Magic 4 - it will move the files when you
resize to drive.

Do you perhaps have TEXMF pointing to a directory that is now incorrect?

Nope, that's not it. I didn't use the .config file from 2.0.36. I did check
the previous configuration of that kernel (the default RH 5.2 kernel
installation), and it had sound as a module, as well as all other drivers. I
tried to install it the same way. The values are right - I copied them out
from conf.modules and isapnp.conf from the old 2.0.36 configuration. I also
checked the dmesg to make sure I'm getting the same drivers being called,
which they are. However, sndconfig still gives me the error shown below.
Manual configuration does not succeed either. Here are the lines taken
directly from my old conf.modules:
alias sound cs4232
alias midi opl3
opl3 io 0x388
cs4232 io 0x534 irq=7 dma=3,0 mpu_base=0x330 mpu_irq=9
^^^^^^^
I remember this part as being split in 2.2.x, but subsequent
splitting attempts did not work either.
Anyone else have a suggestion? I guess I could config sound directly into the
kernel, but I'd like to try to get this to work.
