There is none. Its a matter of preference.

Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config file by putting a # in front of the line that starts

Hi I have my slack7 box set up nicely with blackbox and all the
necessary libs, programs and such. And I dont want to go through
the pains of compiling all the libs and necessary programs to get
everything working nicely.

Can I just tar up my root directory and put it on a CDR then just
untar it in the event I have to reinstall? Supposing that I keep
the same setup in terms of LILO, and hardware, would simply
installing a quick copy of slack without setting up eth or
anything work?

Also, how would me untarring the image on a larger disk than it
was before work out? Would linux care that it was now somehow on
a 6.4 gig drive instead of a 1.5gig partition?

Thanks for any info.

never tried it, sorry. RTFM(I think another message has a pointer)

>2) create a data cd image from a bunch of files

you have to use mkisofs.  There are several ways of doing it;
generally, you do:

mkisofs files -o myiso.iso

Note: I'm not 100% sure about the -o switch; you might need to look
it up. Mkisofs is really easy though.

Do man mkisofs to find the switches. You need to use them in order to
get more power(recursive, joliet, et)

>3) burn a cd image to a CD-R

If you have cdrecord configured perfectly, you only need to put in
cdrecord [-data] myiso.iso Otherwise, you will need a few switches.
Usually, it goes something like cdrecord drive=x,y,z speed=s [-data]
myiso.iso Do a "cdrecord -scanbus" to get your drive's device
number(DO NOT USE /dev/cdrom, this is not the same)

Do man cdrecord for all the switches

>4) same as (3) but with CD-RW

No change, except that maybe, you will need to change the speed
parameter.

>Extra questions:
>
>Can I skip the the image creation using pipes or something?

Yes. I'm sorry, but I don't remember the exact way of doing it. It's
in the cdburning FAQ. Basically, you do a mkisofs files | cdrecord
-data - (don't forget the other switches that you need)

>Do I have to transform mp3 into wav first to feed it to cdrecord? (I
>don't have to do it with windows software)

Yes.

>My CDRW gets mounted under /mnt/cdrom (/dev/cdrom, which is a link to
>/dev/hdc). Do I need to use another "dev" for writing (as opposed to
>reading)?

You do not use a dev file for writing, rather, you reference the drive
by the drive number. Also, your cdrom should be SCSI(to the
computer); you will need to set up ide-scsi if your CDRW is IDE. It's
rather easy -- just recompile the kernel, excluding ATAPI support and
modprobe the ide-scsi module. This may sound tough but it's not.

If the plan is to run in console mode, then the gentle user will decidedly
_not_ be using LyX.

If running in console mode, the only way that "WYSIWYG" is likely is
if the gentle user restricts themselves to ASCII text, and uses a text
editor like vi, Emacs, or EDLIN, and prints the text in rather "raw"
manner to the printer.

Note that this _IS_ WYSIWYG, albeit without there being any pretty
pictures, font controls, or such.

In contrast, using TeX generally leads to a non-WYSIWYG approach, rather
more like "What you can describe using TeX macros you can print quite
beautifully, regardless of how it may look in the input file."

My syslogd is going nuts, i.e. using CPU time, when nothing is going on
on the machine it uses 20% CPU time, looking at the CPU monitor I can
see consistent spices at rgular time intervals. Killing syslogd leaves
the cpu monitor at 0 when nothing is going on, jsu as it is supposed to
be. However, I don't feel very comfortable running without syslogd.

Any ideas what could be going on?

I am using RH6.2

I think the trouble started when I switched to iceWM, but getting rid of
iceWM and killing and restarting syslogd doesn't help.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

I don't get this. I've recompiled my kernel (RH 6.0) to support SCSI-IDE
emulation for a CD burner. According to dmesg, it seems to have worked.
The bootup message says the emulator is running and it says it's detected my
Ricoh burner as a SCSI CD-ROM device. In fact, it says so 8 times, refering
to it as sr0 through sr7.

So why is that when I run "cdrecord -scanbus" I get an error message saying
"cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open SCSI driver."? What am I
doing wrong? Thanks.

OTOH, I don't see any really good reason to turn it off. It runs at

be a problem!

Somebody else suggested chkconfig; that works fine, but being old and
lazy I've started doing things like that from control-panel (I'll bet
there's some really *ugly* history behind the existence of both
control-panel and linuxconf!).

I'd agree -- but having named my last few projects after a composer
(see, if you take Graphical Graph Grammar Editor (two dimensional)
that gives you GGGEb, which sounds like the opening of Beethoven's
Fifth Symphony, so it was called Ludwig), a character in a movie
(Altaira, from ``Forbidden Planet'' since Robby the Robot was
introduced in that movie, and it was a robot control language) and a
science fiction writer (Isaac, since Asimov coined the term
``robotics'' and it was another robot control language), I'd be a
hypocrite...

Here's as good a place as any.... Didn't see your original question.

Get hold of a copy of raidtools and have a look at the doco that comes with it.
It's all to do with software raid and the doco mostly comes in the guise of
exampe config files. Pretty easy to follow.
if you're dealing with hardware raid the the controller manufacturer / vendor
should supply the required doco.

I'm trying to use Linux with BroadCast 2000 and RealProducer

I've not used video editing software before, and as such BC2000
is a bit arcane for me. The included reference manual is quite
sparse, and I've not been able to take enough information from
it. Does anyone know of a guide or FAQ that has been written on
the program, or is anyone willing (with commission) to write one?

Another question is what program can I use to convert QuickTime
files encoded with JPEG or YUV compression to .AVI files, so that
I can encode the AVI files with RealProducer? Currently, I
must save my video as uncompressed RGB QuickTime files, with grow
to huge sizes too quickly.

Thank you, and I appreciate any help.

I don't know everything that can be done with [X]Emacs so I
could be wrong here (I'm actually using emacs in the form of gnus to
reply to your post), but in a sense emacs is WYSIWYG, what you see is
what you get if you print. You don't get bold or italics or various
fonts or support for footnoting, outline structures or anything like
that, (unless those are features of emacs I'm not aware of, one could
probably write macro packages to do some of those things). The
first word processor I used extensively was STWriter for the Atari ST
though I'd used many text editors before that (including one my
brother wrote over a weekend for a homebrew intel 8080 system). What
I use now is TeX, which is, of course, not WYSIWYG but is a word
processor. So, WYSIWYGness is not equivalent to word processing.
