Subject: Packaging software...

Hi,
I'm currently working on a regional settings control panel protoype
(that works with system-level localization and uses Qt for UI) and I
would like to put it in a nice package so that other linux users can
give it a try. I would like users to be able to do a './configure' to
generate the makefiles according to their system's settings. Can anyone
help me on this one? Where can I find good documentation about this
topic?

Thanks,

I don't understand. Eh, you say cd usr/games/adom. That should be fine.
Then, adom. Is that when you get the message? If you do, then you have to cd
/usr/games/adom/adom (probably).
What's ./adom works as well mean?

Probably. I don't know what's included in the "base installation". Probably
the bare minimum. If you've got the space (doesn't need THAT much), install
man. It's worth it.

the *best* linux to use. best is not the correct word here since all

Also, wuld be helpful if someone could tell a few sites to get these

I was doing a tar today and made a mistake with the --exclude option.

Now I've got an 80mb --exclude file that I can't get rid of.

I tried renaming it, moving it, copying it, chmoding it, removing it,
etc. etc. etc.

It will not go away.

Is there any way I can get rid of it permenantly. Just totally anilate
it????

I tried that, but I couldn't find anywhere where I could upgrade my

I assume that by free upgrade you ment actually upgrade between

One example of an older 2.0.x distro that I used to be perfectly satisfied

Try upgrading to a more recent version. I'm currently running 4.71 and
it seems pretty stable, although crashes are still there.

Thats one of my biggest complaints with Linux. The web browsing
experience is very subpar especially with an unstable browser.
Hopefully, Mozilla will be much improved. I'm currently trying out the
pre-release of Netscape 6.0 and I like it except for the memory leaks.
But those should be fixed by the release version.

Yep. Put the pathname in front of it.

Change to the directory with the file in and enter "rm ./--exclude"

Well Brad, you can share files and dir's via NFS by just setting them up in
your /etc/exports file.
Find out how by 'man exports' or:
on MACHINE #1 change that file to be '/ (rw)' (without quotes) reboot it, and
on MACHINE #2 do a 'mount -a 192.168.0.1:/ /mnt/stuff' this will mount your
NFS exported filesystem from MACHINE #1 to /mnt/stuff on your MACHINE #2 where
you can browse it, write to it, share files, etc..

You can also telnet from one machine to the other, you could rlogin, rsh, ftp,
etcetera..

Quick tip: if you want to go from machine to machine without using the actual
IP addresses, just set up the /etc/hosts files on your machines to include the
IP addresses you use and their respective hostnames. (man hosts will help ya)

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

hello all,

I intend to run a very lengthy process in /etc/cron.daily/* and there is
a good chance that it will overlapp with /etc/cron.weekly/*; as I
understand this overlap should be avoided so I'd like to find a way to
run /etc/cron.weekly/* right after /etc/cron.daily/* finishes;

to my knowledge the best way is to comment out the 3 lines from
/etc/crontab and run the following script instead:

        run-parts --report /etc/cron.daily

        if [ $(date +%w) == 0 ]; then
                run-parts --report /etc/cron.weekly
        fi

        if [ $(date +%d) == 01 ]; then
                run-parts --report /etc/cron.monthly
        fi

but I really don't like the idea of messing with the system crontab..

what do you think?
will it break something else?
is there a widely accepted way to do this?

TIA!

At that time the Amiga had a real task switching system, plug-n-play

This suggests that "." (the current working directory) is not in your PATH.
This is a feature, to prevent you from running programs you have never
heard of when you are in unfamiliar directories.

(If you must defeat this helpful feature, then put "." *last* to minimize
the danger.)

Hello,

it's been quite a while since I last saw a DNS query for *.ddns.org

being reported as not existing. http://www.webworks.com.sg/ now

I therefore assume that the ddns.org service has been discontinued,

It is bizarre (to me). I download the src.rpm for nmap

rpm -rebuild routine. It all seems to go fine, with no
errors until it gets to compiling the nmap-frontend,
which also starts fine but then compiling just...stops.
No error messages, no seg fault, no core, nothing. The
build process stops and I am back at the CLI. This is
what I have on my screen when it craps out everytime:

try compiling that - same thing happens just as above.

I no understand. Can anyone enlighten me as to what might be the

gcc-2.95.2 plus all the c/c++ googaws
perl-5.600 plus extras (I mention perl because I saw perl-related

Can you execute your chat-script manually ? Try to connect
to the modem directly (eg using cu) and issue the AT commands
manually. It should connect and then offer you the 'login:'
string. If you receive nothing but garbage characters
(usually about 30 characters in one block, some delay, another
30 characters), then your ISP starts ppp immediately after
the connect.

In this case, you should remove the ogin/ssword lines from your
chat script and configure ppp to use pap or chap. I strongly
assume that your provider uses pap/chap, because this is
the preferred method on Windows boxes. You can see some
debugging output of pppd in /var/log/messages (please use
the 'debug' option of pppd and check your /etc/syslog.conf).

Good luck down under !

No, in the kernel parameters doc it say that this parameter is allowed
for ide0 only.
I have to admit an error of mine: The chipset is HT6550/6570, so I guess
this is the wrong parameter ...
I guess I have to try various combinations of "ide1=..." (the whole
line, with base address and IRQ and all that stuff ...)

Does it help to remember what the boot screen says about "ide0"? Or, in
which entry of /proc can this be read?
(The main board has a VESA Local Bus)

TIA,
Diethard

Subject: Summing Up File Sizes
Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 14:44:08 GMT

I thought that I could do anything in Linux that I could do in DOS and then
some but now I'm stumped. We have a bunch of files and we would like to
know how many blocks of storage or even better how many Kbytes they consume.
We want to do this fairly often. 'ls' will give me the information for a
single file but it will not provide a summary like the DOS 'dir' command
would. Is there a way to do this that is not too complicated, i.e. that can
be done in one command line?

He probably did. You need "man 5 crontab" for the file format.

I am so tired of hearing this nonsense over and over.

Microsoft had *nothing* to do with making computers cheap.

Microsoft doesn't make computers.

Thank IBM for the cheap hardware. They designed the PC using off-the-shelf
parts that anyone could copy. The only difficult part to making a clone
was duplicating the BIOS.

The competition between computer makers is what drove the hardware costs
down so fast.

Old habits die hard.

When I installed RH6.2 just the other day, I created a disk partition
labelled /homes; so of course Redhat then installed all of the home
directories under /home within the "/" partition leaving /homes empty.

Suitably chastened, I now want to move the home dirs over to the separate
partition so I can feel free to wipe "/" for complete upgrades etc.

I am happy to rename this partition "/home" if that will make things easier.

What do I need to change to fix everything up?

Any help appreciated.

I'm not sure if I'M in the right forum for these types of questions,
so feel free to point (shove) me in the right direction if I'm not...

For the most part, when initially entering into a linux-based OS, do
most people download the software or buy the packages, with the CDs,
manuals, additional software, etc? I understand that the software can
be gotten for free, however, between partitioning the hard drive and
other such installation tasks, is it just worth the $50 to get the CDs
that now come "idiot-proof" with regard to getting linux as an option
when booting up your computer? If it's worth the cash, where's the
cheapest place to buy the software? Are the deluxe packages the way to
go...as opposed to just buying the OS CD which I think you can get for a
couple of bucks?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer,
                    Mark
