Depends on the player. One player I've got plays them in physical
order (so the most reliable way was to rename all the files 001.mp3,
002.mp3, etc., and put them in one directory).

The Soul player is *way* better. It plays in alphanumeric order by
filename, and understands directories much better (as well as using
ID3). It allows the use of Joliet (indeed, firmware upgrades must be
recorded with Joliet, apparently).

So I'm afraid you'll need to experiment, because players vary.

Hi,

Does anyone else have the following problem with Konsole (KDE terminal emulator)
When I click inside the 'terminal' or select text with your mouse, it prints
funny charaters in the command line.

The weirdest thing is that this doesn't happen right away. After I launch
konsole, it works fine, but after a while it begins to misinterpret the
mouse.

Thanks in advance.

Is restarting is the only solution, to get away this freezed screen. It
hurts me, I am upset about the uptime of my machine.

I ran into problems with some bug in the code within either /etc/profile
or the PAM/shadow libraries where a particular user with a long username
who belonged to a user private group was not getting his umask set to
002 as it should've been. This made things... interesting for a few
days until I figured out what was going on and implemented a Nasty Hack
(tm). Wouldn't have had this problem if things had been set up
"normally".

Maybe I should've said "user-private-groups-that-are-great-when-they-

Probably. Forget about uptime; unless you have a server doing a
narrowly defined task that requires minimal human interaction, uptime
wars are silly and pointless. It's much better to have a functional
machine that's been up for 24 hours than a non-functional machine that's
been up for 6 years. Besides, if you've got an uptime of more than a
month, you've missed out on some nice kernel updates.

Hi, I'm having a problem with my mouse ever since I upgraded from Mandrake 7.2
to 8.0. When I run gpm I get the error:
        gpm: oops() invoked from gpm.c(962)
        /dev/psaux: No such device
It also does not work in X.

Now, /dev/psaux DOES in fact exist with major 10 and minor 1. Also /dev/mouse
is symbolically linked to /dev/psaux. My kernel is 2.4.3-20mdk.

Can anyone offer any advice as this problem is really getting to me. I'm quite

I've got 384MB and dual Celeron 366s, and I still find Wine kind of
slow a lot of the time. Programs generally run well once they've started, but
they take FOREVER to start up.

I also found that Wine screwed immensely with my Windows setup - I

I am having some trouble compiling the 2.4.2 kernel. Whenever I try to compile it

I have tried getting the source again from the CD, to no avail. Is there any way to
fix this
problem, or do I have to go back to the 2.2.18 kernel?

I'd have to agree that the equation editor in Word is really bad. I
wrote both my thesis and my disertation in Word, but all the equations
were written using another app and inserted into my Word documents. I
wish I'd had access to TeX back then, but it really didn't seem to be an
option at that time (at least as far as I knew). But other than the
equation editor, I really didn't have much trouble with using Word. But
then I kept the formats quite simple.

I'm not sure what it is that u r trying, but it's been _extremely_
rare that I have seen X get hung so badly that I would have to
reboot.

Stepping thru startx (or whatever the binary is) with gdb might give
you a better idea of what is wrong, and what to do about it. Modifying
this code is another option.

I am assuming that you've already tried these options:

  - have you tried M-C-Backspace (Meta-Control-Backspace)? This'll
    kill the X server;

  - switch to the virtual terminal whence you started X, and do C-c to
kill it. Even when X does not seem to respond, often you should be
    able to do this;

  - (if the problem is caused by another hung process, switch to yet
another virtual terminal, and kill that process).

I assumed it did. From 'man convert', under recognized formats:

MPEG+ Motion Picture Experts Group file interchange for
              mat.

Note, a format delineated with + means that if more
than one image is specified, it is combined into a
single multi-image file. Use +adjoin if you want a
single image produced for each frame.

Of course, I didn't try it, so I could be completely off my rocker.

For starters, try

:help compatible

for instructions on setting up your .vimrc to make it braindead. (er, just
like vi). A trip to www.vim.org may help, too, as there are quite a few
sample .vimrc's from people with all sorts of preferences. Just getting rid
of the syntax is :syntax off

Or try just 'vim' vi amy be a link to gvim on your machine. gvim (or
vim -g) will have a menu at least for an Athena or Motif build, and a
toolbar for a Gtk+ build.

Personally, syntax coloring saves my bacon, or at least saves me another
compile, almost daily. When you're a crappy typist, it helps if #defien
fails to turn a shade of red or whatever color it turns. I can never
remember what the default colors are, except for blue.

MA301 Wireless PCI adapter (~$40)

The idea is to hook up to my ADSL line in the basement, then be
able to do wireless networking throughout the house.

But do their adapters have a Linux driver?

Anyone know? I've looked at the usual Linux wireless sites and

Also, any opinions about this stuff and/or the utility of this
