It won't be available by July 11 (release date may be July 23 or possibly
as late as August 4), but I'll donate two copies of my _Special Edition

I used to do that sitting at the front panel of my IMSAI 8080, many
years ago. Also did it in front of a Data General Nova 800 at work.
On one occasion, I wrote a 5 byte "program" in debug, which would
return a specified error code. In C, the same program was a few
Kbytes.
Also, you know you've been around computers too long, when you start

Subject: KDE/X
Date: Thu, 01 Jul 1999 22:12:23 +0200
Hi!
I have a problem, which I am struggling with for a long time now.
I use SuSE 6.1 + KDE 1.1.1
My problem is that when I use KDE, the window manager hangs sometimes.
It looks like it freezes, but the apps are running in the background. I
can even move the pointer which changes its shape and move the virtual
screen too. Nevertheless I don't have any interaction with the
interface. All I can do is to ctrl-alt-backspace and start over again.
In this case I loose a lot of my work and setup of course. It gets
irritating and it seems to be that I am the only one on Earth who has an
unstable X.
First I thought it could be a hardware error. When I installed OSS I got
the following message:
----
Note!
You appear to have a graphics card based on Nvidia Riva128 chip.
It's a known problem that this chip can't share it's IRQ
with any other device when X is being used (this is nothing OSS
related).
Unfortunately Riva128 appears to share it's IRQ with some other
device(s)
in your system.
Please use BIOS PCI/PnP setup to allocate a private IRQ for Riva128.
In your case the conflict is between Riva128 and a _NON_ sound
device.
This means that the conflict should NOT affect functionality of OSS.
However you may experience system lockups while starting X11.
The following IRQ number(s) appear to be shared with Riva128: 11
----
I changes the IRQ of my card to 9, then 5. It was fine for some time,
but when I upgraded from KDE 1.1 to KDE 1.1.1 it began all over again. I
don't know if it is related or just pure coincidence though.
1. How can I reset the X server in a way that I won't loose my
applications, so that I can keep my proggies on the 'tray'.
2. What can cause such a behaviour?
Thanks in advance
You are my only help :-)

Always had an itch to see how good you really were at this networking
stuff?
Well, here's your chance to finally test your mettle. This problem has
stumped everyone I know and they have all been forced to relinquish
their
crowns. So, it's up for grabs... anyone who helps me solve this
problem,
wins all bragging rights AND the vaunted no-prize! So what is this
problem?
Briefly, I just installed Redhat 6.0/WinNT dualboot and I have IP
aliasing
enabled according to the scheme below (primary interface has a real IP;
first alias has a real IP; 2nd alias has a fake IP). So the problem is
that
the IP aliasing seems to timeout after a while under RedHat. I'm using
a
Linksys Etherfast (with the latest tulip driver) and the aliases work
fine
under Windoze NT. However, after about 40 minutes, none of the aliases
are
pingable under redhat. The primary interface stays functional
throughout
but the aliases all seem to timeout. A reboot or poweroff doesn't
change
this. The only thing that seems to help is to remove all the aliases
AND
the primary interface and then reenter the primary and aliases again.
It
then works again for about 40 minutes, after which time the aliases time
out
once again (but the primary interface continues to work). I've tried
using
both ifconfig and the netcfg from the control-panel to no avail.
So there you have it... if you can help solve this not only will you
have my
eternal undying gratitude; not only will you be able to wear the Linux
Guru
Crown with pride; but you'll also be the winner of the one and only
no-prize
(offer valid in the contiguous united states; we are an equal
opportunity
empire; local sales tax may apply).
Thanks in advance!
Rick.

Striving for all documentation to be in the same format is a Good
Thing in and of itself. (At least if the format is sane.) It's bad
enough that some documentation is in man pages, other documentation is
in info files, but we don't have to add to that.
Consider that people may want to have a comprehensive index of all
documentation about all programs on a system -- having n documentation
formats for n programs is not going to help, here!

/dev/hda6 is commonly configured as the root partition
when the dos fdisk (or a program like Partition Magic)
is used. One starts with a Windows partition /dev/hda1
and an extended partition /dev/hda5. (I don't know why
it is numbered 5, but I've seen this happen recently, for
example, when Partition Magic was used to repartition
a disk with W98 on it and we didn't remove the extended
partition.) Then when one sets up the Linux partitions,
they appear as logical partitions within the extended
partition, and the first one is /dev/hda6.
One could presumably avoid this by removing the extended
partition before starting the Linux installation. However,
I don't think any of this is the source of the problem. It
appears to be that the kernel was not all installed below
the 1024 cylinder limit.

Jrgen is correct.
As a matter of fact, this is most certainly not unique to Linux.
There are floppy boot disks for almost every single PC operating
system.
If you have ever loaded an operating system made by Microsoft
Corporation, you have probably booted off of floppy at least
once. Sound familiar?

I notice you never question the fact that 1) atrocities have escalated as
a result of the US bombing of the former Yugoslavia, and 2) that it was
entirely predictable (in fact, *predicted*) that this would happen.
Btw, why do you harp on the right to "criticize" when it obviously means
jack squat? Criticism of the US government obviously means a lot if the
mass media never report on it but are chock full of the administration's
propaganda.

The first thing you should do is *NOT* to escalate the atrocities already
going on. The intentions of the USA are not in question; they are evil and
this can be seen by anyone who knows jack fuck all about US foreign policy.
Should the USA stop atrocities? It should first stop *helping* atrocities!!

Since the USA controls them, to a lesser or greater extent, and they just

Did you try to start it manually? check if lpd isn't a shell script
which is misconfigured. Check /etc/printcap. If all fails, try to reinsta=
ll
lpd.

Did you *REALLY* check that interface between the chair and the keyboard?=

Which must be why there's all that stuff with "From Chile" in my local
grocery store's fruit section. I forgot what it is but I make sure not
to buy it, just like I don't buy from Del Monte, Chiquita or Nestle ...
With Chile is usually associated the Anaconda Copper saga. Every politician
of the day (left, right and center) was going to nationalize the copper mines
but the US-owned company wasn't too happy with that so they gave millions to
the CIA so it could assassinate Allende and, when that failed to bring down
his party, to just overthrow the government. Other US companies were also
involved; the media focuses on those whose money the CIA rejected.
And it's Salvador, not Salvatore.
Note for anyone who cares, I confused Nicaragua with El Salvador in
my previous post.
Arbenz was in Nicaragua and overthrown by the Sandanista's under Daniel
>Ortega, not a friend of the US.
Arbenz was the head of state of Guatemala when it was overthrown by a
CIA backed coup d'etat. The FSLN (Sandinistas) took over after Somoza
(a brutal military dictator) resigned. All but two of the top leaders
of the US-backed terrorists (known as "freedom-fighters in the US media)
operating in Nicaragua were members of the Somozist National Guard.

What the fuck kind of argument is that; *you* didn't participate in it
so obviously there cannot have been such a thing?! Are you asserting
that you make up the bulk of the US military? Or maybe that you were
a General in charge of Nicaragua operations at the time?
What do you think your maps in South America were used for?
