But I take it that it's not a serial port modem?

I'd like to know of a winmodem that operates entirely on a serial
connection.

Absolutely. And they often don't have any until you tell them what they
are. Marketing exists for that purpose. The average person (my mother)
doesn't think she needs a mobile telephone, or the internet, or email,
or a word processor, or an electronic calculator, come to that.

She has the option of whatever whe wants to use, which includes msword,
wordperfect, vi, emacs and latex, lyx, etc. The point is that an
ordinarily intelligent person usually prefers vi/emacs and latex if they
like to make things like that look good and they prefer to have things
easy. I don't find word easier (just the opposite!). If you're talking
about a person who can't write a letter and can't type, sure, let them
use something that writes the letter for them. But a professional
letter-writer (which is what offices consist of, surely?) will go for
speed and control, which amounts to vi+latex. Particularly I expect and
hope that a technologically oriented company will have secretaries whose
abilities are compatible with the image and the aims of the company!
I'm sorry that your secretaries are so dumb.

Yes, we have secretaries here now who can't manage a spreadsheet and
don't know their IP address so we can't configure samba to let them log
in. But this is a third-world technological country. They don't have
the technological atmosphere permeating the ether, so they don't pick it
up by osmosis. Back in silicon glen, or silicon fen, they weren't that
dumb. Weird yes, dumb no. (says he, remembering a lunchtime chat in
dead seriousness in which one of the secretaries revealed that a
friend had spontaneously combusted, over the pot noodles).

:> If you mean "dimwits who can't screw in a lightbulb", please say so.

Just as I may not find it wise to to spend my time and effort researching
and installing a state of the art culinary preparation apparatus? Are you
saying anything here?

I believe you are sayng something like "there is a large market
consisting of people who would like to believe they are good letter
writers with advanced technological skills, but aren't".

You have to have msdos support in the kernel and you have to
enable mounting that drive as msdos in your /etc/fstab file
for any of those commands to work. I'll presume that you
have msdos enabled in the kernel since most recent distros
come with it enabled as a module out of the box, unless you
excluded DOS connectivity during the install. Check your
fstab and, if required, change the fstype field to say auto
for your floppy device.

Here's a quick hack I threw together a few years ago which does what
you want. I suppose there is a correct, documented way to do it, and
this is definitely not that, but it does work!

Save this to a file, name it 'getvn.c' then compile with:

        cc -o getvn getvn.c

to run it, insert a CD, DO NOT MOUNT IT, then run:

getvn /dev/cdrom (or wherever your CD is located if not there)

If you're trying to mount a floppy without an
entry in your /etc/fstab, the command you'd use is:

mount /dev/fd0 /mnt -t auto

This would mount your floppy to /mnt with FS type
auto. Without an entry in your fstab, Linux
doesn't know where to mount the disk. Also, if it
is in your fstab but you specify a FS type, you
must also supply a mountpoint.

Hope this helps.

"Segmentation fault" usually means a function in the program has
attempted to access an address in memory which is not allocated to it.
I.e. if the program "runme" is given (for example) the memory blocks 550
to 600 by the operating system, and the program tries to change or read
memory block 700, then the OS will tell the program to sod off.

If you downloaded the program already compiled, then it may be the
program was compiled with different versions of some libraries. This
can be fixed by recompiling the program from its source code on your
machine.

I doubt the Athlon is at fault but the motherboard may be. I'd check
Gigibyte for bios upgrades and also the kernel mailing list for issues with
whatever chipset you're motherboard uses. Presumably you've already checked
for cabling issues etc?

Subject: looking for backup software
Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 17:56:41 GMT

Hi,

I am trying to setup automatic backup process for our company's servers. I
was trying to use "dump" for incremental dump, but it seems that it only
work on a single EXT2 filesystem. I need to dump multiple file systems
(includes, NFS and EXT2) into one tape.

I will appreciate any recommendation!!

Back when 14.4 modems were common there were some (even external serial
types) that did data compression and error correction in software. That
didn't last long though since people actually returned the things as
defective rather than just accepting it as normal.

But vim also has a windows port. Why not run it natively?
