Point operators might like to look at Feddy, a Fido point setup.
Never did get to try it out, Fido died in my area first. Long live

Hi.

I'm working for a client where the previous developer left on bad terms. He
will not turn over any passwords for the development box. I need to access
the linux filesystem on this box and get the source code off of it.

What is my best approach to do this?

Thanks,

Matthew Cromer

Actually, Linux is quite different from Windoze. You've got to be very
talented to screw up a Linux installation to the point of re-install.

If you're having problems - try to RTFM. I've found more often than not
that 5 minutes browsing man pages will answer my question faster than a
newsgroup response.

Linux may not be "user friendly" like Windoze, but atleast the OS doesn't
tell me what I want to do.

If you want your computer to hold your hand, or to admit that you don't
have the patience or the intelligence to take a few minutes to read and
find out what you're doing, then it sounds like Windoze is the OS for you.

Tell Bill I said "Hi!".

Appache supports binding, but I need Linux to do the same....
Any ideas?

I'm interested in posting some free linux on my homepage. I'm an
experienced trainer, but not experienced with Linux. I plan on using
this site to get experienced writing cgi scripts, and to practice
database access procedures. I want to stress that these exams will be
completely free, and hopefully demanding.
How about some ideas on what topics people would like to see.

Linux's security is really remote-oriented. If you've got access to the
machine, you're all but in.

Unless they've encrypted the filesystem (doubtful, but possible) - a boot
(or "rescue") disk should do the trick. Mount the filesystem and start
sucking the data off the drive onto some external media.

Theoretically - you could also remove the root password by manually editing
the passwd (and shadow ?) files.

Look into ipmasq and ipchains (newer) or ipfwadm (older). You'll need ipmasq
to use RFC1918 addresses (10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x through 172.31.x.x, and
192.168.x.x). The other two enable some simple port filtering (like extended
access lists in Cisco).
Peer to peer will need a cross-over cable, hub won't.
Proxy servers relay requests from internal clients to external servers --
old and slow technology, though useful for filtering banner ads
(junkbuster). I recommend sticking with ipchains.
If you've got an old 386 or 486 that you're not doing anything better with,
you might also look into LRP at www.linuxrouter.org. It makes the
routing/security functions simpler and allows you to mess with your main
machine without the fear of destroying your internet connection.

This sounds like something is getting confused between UTC (a.k.a. GMT)
and your local time zone. I see from your message that you (in Melbourne)
are 10 hours ahead of UTC. Are you sure that your clock is really turning
up 2 hours behind, rather than 10 ahead, or something like that?

This seems to be a Netscape bug. I have actually worst results
under RedHat 6.0. All versions of Netscape 4.51 up get flushed
under RedHat 6.0 certain web sites. Under SuSE Netscape crashes.
A kill cleans up fast. On the other hand Netscape US 4.5 works
great on either one.

Wow Im shocked that you are having so much trouble getting things to run. I
gave a copy of my RH6.0 to a friend and he popped the cd in the drive booted up
and installed RH 6.0 in about 10-15 minutes. Everything worked great. He had
gnome and sound and ran Linux config and setup his ppp connection and away he
went with Netscape. I didnt offer any advice because I wanted to see if a
person without any linux experience could set it up.

The ONLY thing lacking at this time with Linux is applications. More and more
are coming out everyday. In 6 months you will see a ton of cool stuff for this
kick ass o/s.
