swap has been used, watch during high usage of your server with vmstat, how long
it keeps swaping,
write a script that colects automagically data to file if your machine is
swapping. That you don't have much RAM left
free is normal on a linux server, as linux has this clever aproach: You paid
for all this RAM, I will use it,
everything will be cached and bufferd what is done, speeds up next time much
more if the VM has not to load
it from disc...

I would consider puting more RAM in your machine, it's cheap, the more you have
the faster Linux will be, but even if you had 1 G in
your server it would be all taken by linux very fast but most shrd & buff. Some
DB like it, if you set the shared max pages in the kernel sources higher and
recompile it, I don't know about Sybase...

What about disk speed? Look with hdparm how much your disks give you...

That's not comparing the same things, you are running a workstation, with X and
some seti proccess on a machine
with plenty of RAM...lucky you...

Seti is running complete in memory and no I/O to disks like a database
described by the original poster does

Good luck

I searched freshmeat.net and found a program that's called antiword. Might be
others too. But check freshmeat and see if you find some you want to use.

Subject: No User Login
Date: Sat, 3 Feb 2001 10:41:43 -0500

Running LM 7.2 on P3. System working just fine until this AM when I find I
cannot login in as user. Using run level 5 and can login as root, but any
attempt to log in as user just returns me to the graphical login screen.
When I try to login from the prompt I can login successfully to all user
accounts, plus root. Then "startx" runs KDE in root only. "startx" in any
of several user consoles returns the message:

"Error setting up interprocess communication in KDE. networkldsList
argument is NULL. Check that "dcopserver" is running."

In fact I cannot login to Gnome or any other GUI, not just KDE. And when in
a root console I run "dcopserver" I get a message that it is already running
in on of the hidden root directories. As far as I can tell I have made no
(yes, this time it's different!) changes since yesterday's successful logins
as user.

Puzzled. I know this is a simple fix, but I am not smart enuf to know
_which_ fix.

Hi,
I have notes that I have written in both Linux and Windows95
that I would like to exchange between both platforms so that I
can read them in either system. How can this be done?
Are there more than one way to do this?

Are you just talking plain text files? If so, there are utitilies
"dos2unix" and "unix2dos" (you can doubtless find RPMs on
www.rpmfind.net, if you like RPMs) which will convert the line terminator
conventions and so forth.

If you're talking Microsoft Word files (which many Windows users
tragically seem to think is a universal interchange format for text),
then your best bet is to use AbiWord or StarOffice to convert; see, for
instance, www.abisource.com

dos2unix and unix2dos on the Unix side. Or use a text editor that can
automagically determine which format the ASCII is in, and adjust. vim
can do this, and so can emacs. (Yes, vim and emacs are available for
'Doze.) MS Word will convert Unix or Mac ASCII to DOS ASCII, but you
have to make sure to save as .txt and not .doc.

This only works with ASCII text. Formats like MS Word's .doc do not
work this way, but StarOffice can open/read/write most .docs.
WordPerfect for Linux exists, so .wp8 files should be no problem. HTML
should be readable anywhere (if it contains well-formed HTML according
to the W3C definition.)

Hello,

try antiword, search freashmeat, you can use it from scripts as it is CLI

Subject: iproute2 + wrr: compilation problems (unresolved symbols)

Hi,

I'm trying to setup a linux server with iproute2 and wrr (weighted round
robin queue) but I have problems in the first step: compiling the kernel
for QoS support. When I'm going to create the first queue, I get:

[root@servidor rc.d]# tc qdisc add dev eth2 root handle 8000: cbq
  bandwidth 10MBit allot 1514 cell 8 avpkt 1514 mpu 64
  RTNETLINK answers: Argumento inv=E1lido
  [root@servidor rc.d]#

It's because a dependancy problem between QoS kernel modules:

 [root@servidor rc.d]# depmod -a
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.2.14-12/misc/cls_route.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.2.14-12/misc/cls_u32.o

depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.2.14-12/misc/sch_wrr.o
 [root@servidor rc.d]#

I've compiled many times, and read compilation and QoS docs, and reviewed
the added/changed kernel files for wwr queue support, but... :(.

The author of wrr code said me that it's sure to be a compilation problem,
not a qos/wrr problem. Could anyone of you suggest some solution/idea? If
you need more info please ask me. Thanks in advance

Hi,

My Linux system, SuSE-7.0 Pro, has been upgraded with the KDE-2.0.1 that I
downloaded from ftp.kde.org. Ever since the upgrade to KDE-2.0.1, a lot of
the kde programs crash (SEGV11) when exit. Some newly compiled program,
i.e. kwintv, kicq, rosegardengui, etc., just SEGV11 when executed. Does
anybody have encountered such a bizzard with the KDE-2.0.1 or am I missing
something in the upgrades? I have downloaded the full kde-2.0.1 package
with the full installation.

I have a small dos utility called flip which I've been using for years in
the dos environment to convert in either direction. In Linux you could
simply write a simple perl script to do the same thing. I can email you the
flip program if you so desire.

Basically if both are pure text files, in dos the lines end in a carriage
return and line feed (character values 13 and 10) whereas in linux the lines
end only in the character 10 (line feed, called newline character in Linux).

With the overlap condition, Partition Magic is taking the
cautious way out because it can't be certain where one partition
ends and the other begins. Resizing/moving the partions in this
condition could result in data loss. The best way to fix this
(unless you're ready to edit the partition table by hand) is to
back up all your data, delete the partitions, recreate them and
restore the data. Probably not what you wanted to hear,
though...

Free internet phone calls for Linux ? Net2Phone ?
I think Net2Phone is a great service. You can make phone calls with a
computer for free, and because I have DSL, the quality is almost perfect.
However, I was not able to find Net2Phone client for Linux.
Does anyone know of free internet phone service for Linux?

** FOR YOUR REFERENCE **

The service address, to which questions about the list itself and requests
to be added to or deleted from it should be directed, is:

You can send mail to the entire list by posting to comp.os.linux.misc.

Linux may be obtained via one of these FTP sites:
    ftp.funet.fi pub/Linux
    tsx-11.mit.edu pub/linux
    sunsite.unc.edu pub/Linux
