If you put lilo in the master boot record, and you can thereby
boot both Linux and NT, you have nothing to worry about. The
reason for using instead the NT boot manager is that with NT version
4, if you put the lilo boot loader in the master boot record,
that would usually make it impossible to boot NT. But if you
don't have that problem, there is no reason to do it.

It is not clear just what you want to do. But if your version of
NT can live with the lilo boot loader in the master boot record
of the first disk, you should not have any problem with putting
Linux on the second disk. I don't know about putting NT in the
second disk, but that would really be an NT problem. Lilo should
be able to get you there, and if NT can handle the rest, it will
work.

Your description is a bit confused. Perhaps you should say just
exactly what you want to do.

Try using /sbin/chkconfig. Look at its manual page to see
how to use it.

My one works fine - it's a Mitsumi 4804TE (IDE). You need to put SCSI
emulation in the kernel so that cdrecord can see it, but this isn't
much of a problem, especially if the main reason you want the IDE
drive is cost.

After the SCSI emulation is functioning, it just behaves like a SCSI
writer.

You might try "setup" as root at a command line then choose Sound
config

I had the same problem. I installed enlightenment and it went back to
normal. I don't use enlightenment I just have it installed.

I fyou are using gnome it is in the gnome configuration tool in the
"windowmanager/run configuration tool/desktop" section

In helix-gnome it is in the:
"gnome configuration tool/workspaces/Edge Flipping" section.

Hi,

on SUSE-based systems I used agetty to get a serial terminal console running.
With RedHat it is not included, before I start to search on how to do this by
hand, has anybody a tip on how to do this the 'easy' way?

They work fine, although getting them installed and setup sometimes
requires a bit more effort then most other devices. It depends on your
distro, newer ones sometimes make it a lot easier. I have seen a number
of posts on problems with Ricohs - but that is definitely not a
scientific survey. My Maxtor 8/4/32A has performed flawlessly - no
coasters yet (I have plenty of AOL disks for that purpose).

If you are copying disks (since you are using dd, I am assuming they are
identical disks) you can just do:
cp /dev/hda /dev/hdc

Works just as good, takes fewer keystrokes. I would boot into single
user mode first. If your computer and disks are capable of 32 bit DMA,
make sure to enable that, or the copy could take a VERY long time.
Copying a fast 20G disk this way with 32 bit DMA accesses enabled took
me 35 minutes - that is a sustained transfer rate of 10 MB per second.
Without 32 bit DMA, that time would likely be a couple of hours.

If the disks are not identical, you might want to reconsider using
either dd or cp.

As for blocksize (bs) in dd, I would definitely expect bs=1440k to be as
fast or faster than bs=18k, though I doubt by much. And I can't imagine
it would make much difference on a floppy. In my experience, bigger is
better, though eventually with diminishing returns.

Does RealAudio actually work with Linux? All I get is error 38. I've
written
to RealAudio but their stock reply is not helpful.

I'm using kernel 2.2.12-20 (Redhat 6.1), with Netscape 4.61 (which
shouldn't matter).
My system does not have a firewall (I'm using a simple dialup modem ppp
connection
to the web). I've tried various connection speeds and all the transport
options:
with "HTTP only" I get error 19. With all other transport options, I
get error 38.

This is my first attempt to use use sound with Linux, so perhaps I'm
making some
silly error.

Thanks,

Finally.
It appears that I get to play music CDs in Win2K. Game sounds are
non-existant. My guess is that this is because the Linux Aureal OSS driver
is a beta driver which doesn't support games yet. Would it be natural
for the virtual SB-driver to take support from the host sound driver?

/usr/sbin/sndconfig
(Mandrake 7.1 YMMV)

That's quite normal. At least over the desktop. Some themes may change
how the cursor behaves I think.

You can do this in your Xconfig file - No virtual or somesuch somewhere.
I'm not sure about the syntax. I don't know if it is doable from Gnome.

Hello,

Is it somehow possible to retrieve (programmatically, of course) the
manufacturer's serial number of the hard disk or some other devices?
What I have in mind is, of course, piracy protection - if I can get the
s/n of the hard disk, I can more or less insure that the program is used
on this particular machine only.

I am sorry, that my message is not compliant to Open Source spirit, from
which Linux has grown, I really appreciate it, but there may be certain
situations when some data *must* be protected from copying...

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Powerchute and diald
Date: Sat, 01 Jul 2000 20:52:19 GMT

I have just installed an APC UPS on my Red Hat Linux server, and it's working
fine. This server shares my dialup internet connection to the other PCs on my
home network. However, whenever I bring up the PowerChute software, it causes
diald to connect to the internet, and seems to be polling that connection
every 3 or 4 seconds. Why? And does anyone know how to prevent this? I've
watched the ethernet activity with tcpdump, and there's no local traffic that
would cause the dialup connection to begin. If I watch the packets queue on
diald with dctrl, it shows UDP traffic updating every 3 or 4 seconds. When I
shut down xpowerchute, the udp connection begins to expire, so I'm convinced
that PowerChute is the culprit. I've gone through the various control
settings on PowerChute, and removed any reference to ttyS1 (my modem port),
and restarted the daemon, but this hasn't helped.

Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks in advance.

Better yet would be to fix the problem that makes sendmail take
forever to start, eh?

Sendmail is trying to do a DNS lookup on whatever the hostname
is, and the timeout is something like 3-4 minutes. If you
configure /etc/host.conf and /etc/hosts correctly, it will
find things quickly.

First, run "hostname" and see what it thinks your host is named.
If what you see is not what you want, you will have to figure
out how your particular distribution sets the hostname at boot
time. Use the "grep" command in /etc/rc.d or /etc/init.d or
whatever the appropriate directory is to find where that
happens. One common way is to have a file /etc/HOSTNAME, which
has one line that is the hostname.

Once that works, make sure that there is an entry in /etc/hosts
for that name. If you have no ethernet interface you can use
either a dummy interface or the loopback interface. Then
be sure that /etc/host.conf looks like this:

  order hosts bind
  multi on

The significant part is that "hosts" comes before "bind", which
will cause a DNS query to be satisfied first from the /etc/hosts
file and only attempt a networked DNS server lookup if it is
not found in /etc/hosts.

# hdparm -i /dev/hda on my machine gives, among other stuff,
SerialNo=WD-WM6281120438

Check the hdparm source to find out exactly how they did that.

"And von Neumann divided the Abstractions into 2 parts, and these parts he
called Data and Code." Assembly language on the x86 makes a sharp
distinction between data and code segments, and similar protection
mechanisms exist in other modern processors. The GPL is all about free
code, not necessarily free data, so don't worry too much there.

Although if they want to copy/pirate your stuff, they *WILL*. Not to
mention that you'll be SOL when the hard drive your code is keyed to
breaks, unless you put in an (exploitable) entry point....
