I tried this with RH6.0 and printer to a postscript printer.
lpr -p filename
seemed to work without complaint, but nothing was printed.

However,
pr filename | lpr
worked fine.

How can I shut down a program that I started in my .xinitrc before X
shuts down. I'm starting root-tail to display messages on my desktop.
But everytime I log out of X it core dumps, it's not getting shut down
properly. I'm using a gnome-session, any way to tell gnome to shut the
program down before logging out? Or is there any place to put a script
that says:

if
root-tails is running; then
shutdown root-tail

Thanks,

Is the mount program setuid root? If not, then only root can use
it to mount things.

Having mount be setuid root may be an extra security risk. If you are
using sudo anyway, or trust sudo's security more than mount's security,
you may want to make mount not setuid root and use sudo to control
non-root mounting.

Subject: SUN Disk Label - How to remove??
Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1999 19:21:30 GMT

All,

I've salvaged a couple of SCSI-2 drives from old Sparc LXs to run
linux on in a PC. Everything works ok, but the linux kernel always
reports the disk carries a Sun label during boot - even after I've
"low level" formatted the disks using the SCSI controller bios utility
(both Buslogic and Adaptec).

So,

1) What exactly happens to the disk when we select "Label" from the
SunOS/Solaris FORMAT utility?

2) Can the label be removed?

Bewildered, and appreciative of some enlightenment,

Harry

The short answer is that you refer to these by $IP and
$ROUTER in bash (or sh) scripts. But you can certainly
run into trouble if you are doing complicated things. You
may want to use double quotes or even single quotes to
prevent the shell from interpreting some of your characters.

I would recommend studying the documentation for bash and
doing some experimentation to learn how to do this.

Better yet, learn how to use Perl and do it with a Perl
script. This involves more work initially, but it may
save you time in the end if what you are doing is at all
complicated. Again, you will probably have to do a lot
of experimentation. But Perl is a bit more forgiving
of sloppiness in writing scripts.

Subject: Yamaha XG 64V sound card

Sorry about the mulitple posts. I got the wrong subject the first time
around.

I have just purchased a new DELL Dimension XPS T450 home computer.
It has a Yamaha XG 64V PCI sound card apparently built on something
called the "724 DS-1" chip set. Other info of questionable value:
        PCI Slot 2 is DVD/audio
PCI Slot 3 is Audio/SCSI (there are no SCSI devices in the computer)
None of the 16 IRQs mention audio or sound as a resource. Both DREQ0
and DREQ1 are mentioned as "Default audio DMA channel assignment".

After a complete install of RedHat 6.0 on half of my HD (I picked the
"everything" install option), I ran sndconfig but it did not find the
sound card as a PnP device, so I still have no sound on the Linux side.
It sounds great over on the Windows 98 side.

Questions:

(1) Since this card is not on the list of supported cards, does this
mean that it will be difficult or impossible to get it working?
(2) Assuming possible, what is the procedure? Obtain a driver? (Whatever
*that* is...) Rebuild kernel? (Yikes! From what I have
read, I am probably not capable of this -- not now, not ever.)
Configure something somewhere in the system? (I haven't a clue
    what or where...)

Since I am a complete computer illiterate, I would ideally like to
get some advice along the lines of a detailed, step-by-step set of
instructions. If this is not possbile, just say so! I'll forgo
sound on the Linux side if I must, but I don't want any more trouble.
Installing RedHat 6.0 has already been my worst nightmare.

No, we don't get off that easy. People kill for no other reason then
just to kill sometimes. There is no life threat, no survival issues
involved, it just is. Some people are just sadistic....

Thank you for your reply. Maybe I'm going to accept your gentle offer.
Yesterday I've tried to repeat the experience to check when the card is
blasting. It is not always like this, but it happens when I reboot to
Debian 2.1 and it modprobes midi right after I used RedHat 6.0 for a
while. I checked the boot process of RedHat and it seems to load and
save mixer settings at boot time and halt. I don't know if this could be
causing the problem. A second possibility is the init.d script that I
added for loading midi. There I just do a /sbin/modprobe midi but in my
/etc/conf.modules I do a post-install midi that calls sfxload for the
wave tables. How do you load them automagically? Does it load midi
modules just by that time that you call drvmidi for example? For another
reason I decided load midi at boot time is because I was getting some
freezes with X when I loaded midi manually and worked with X for a
while. Now I don't have those freezes but I have the blasts. I wonder if
the freezes have to do with the memory allocation for the DMA of this
ISA card.

There's a slick toy called tkwallpaper that uses xv to change your
background picture every n seconds from a list of files that you make --
jpgs, gifs, pixmaps, it doesn't care.

What I want is a screensaver that uses your own list of graphics rather
than the lovely geometric things that already come with X.

I'm looking for a good pop3 email client. I'm currently using Netscape

think it's time for a change. I don't really care if it is X or

I've tried elm, exmh, arrow, mutt, pine, postillion, etc, etc. I've
gone through this same delimma when choosing a window manager and ended
up staying with the one I had used originally. Ain't WindowMaker
great!!!
I'm not sure if I'll do the same thing here. Maybe one day I'll read
the
emacs documentation and learn how to set it up for email. All
suggestions

I had distorted color using 24 bpp, although it worked fine using the
32 bpp alignment of true color. I have switched to 16bpp because I
have another program that crashes when I try to run it at 32bpp.
Although the other program runs at 24bpp, if I want both at the same
time, I need to give up millions of colors. So far, nothing has
complained about this setting.

The original poster should experiment with different color depths.

WAHOO!!! Ben, it worked perfectly -- just changed your old filenames to
reflect the new reality! I downloaded the rpm, which required something
called netscape-common, which I didn't have, so I downloaded the 1.5
.tgz version. Followed the instructions and dear lord there was Clinton
in all his glory :-( babbling about something or other! Could have
chosen a better test, but what the hell!

Well you said you already used mutt. I really like mutt quite a bit. elm &
pine are ok I guess. But for ease of use and features and such I really
like mutt. I really don't need some kool looking gui mail program for the
stuff I do. I also use WindowMaker and like it a lot also, KDE is tempting
but I think I still prefer WindowMaker more.

Good Luck,

Subject: bsd or linux?
Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1999 21:02:46 GMT

I am a newbie who was just given a 486 PC with a whopping 4megs of RAM.
I would like to set this thing up as a UNIX/Linux box. I don't
necessarily even want a windowing environment, I just want to build
sysadmin skills. I am fairly inexperienced--my UNIX experience is
minimal (I use Solaris at work, and know basic UNIX commands).

For a system like this, with my objectives, would BSD or Linux be best?
If Linux, which one for crying out loud?

Thanks,
Todd
