Hi folks!
Here's my situation:

I've installed via rpm, the GNU Accounting Utilities (release 6.3.2).
In /var/log I have the files pacct usracct savacct.
I've read the man pages on accton.

>From /etc/rc.d/rc.local I run:

/usr/sbin/accton -V /var/log/pacct

However, I see no activity in /var/log pacct or no process running.
What am I missing?

Thanks in advance!

ncftp is a very nice package that overcomes all of the limitations of
ftp. It can do recursive downloads, has bookmarks, remembers your
username and passwords if you want it to, has filename and dirname
completion with the TAB key and so on.

http://www.ncftp.com/ncftp/

It doesn't have the graphical user interface of WSFTP, but this is a
good thing.

I beg to differ sir, If your going to tell someone to "RTFM" then on
something not readily apparent from the man listing, Please specify what
manual you think he should have read...

I read Micer's request and got curious.

I can almost do it with a

ls -F | grep /

But I lack the skill with regex to get grep to list only those lines that
match the pattern <"abc" from Micer's question> at the beginning of the
filename only, without specifying -w or \< pattern \> in which case I
can't figure out how to get it to match an unspecified number of
characters following pattern <ie the rest of the filename...>

I tried man ls, man grep and man regex... And I still don't know how to do
what he asked... So I think it was exceedingly rude to just blow Micer off
with an "RTFM". I mean, in this group even lame questions from clueless
newbies trying to escape MS usually get an answer, so why be so rude to
someone with a different *nix background looking for a replacement to
a command he is used to finding on a *nix.

If I were you, I would do this:

-backup printcap

-run the RH printtool

-delete all printers

-add a printer, using printtool (/usr/bin/printtool); does it
detect the proper devices?

-edit the printer configuration as needed

-use the printtool's printing tests, direct to device, ascii test
page, postscript page, as debug tool

Hopefully the above will either solve the problem or give you a
clue to what it is.

Of course, if you get a PPC, like iPaq or Casio, and load Linux,
you still pay Mr Gates for PPC. In the next year, there will be
handhelds shipping w/ Linux. I'll wait. Given the price of the
Agenda, I wonder how much of the iPaq price tag is due to the PPC
license...

Speaking of comatability, the way I understand PocketLinux's plan is
that most applications would be compiled to Java byte codes so that
they would be compatible with any port of PocketLinux, regardles of
the instruction set of the processor. That's the right thing,
obviously, and something that Java should be very good at.
Performance shouldn't be too bad because their JVM should be quite
fast, being a JIT compiler and all.

Why not look in /var and see? As root, do du /var and look at the
results.

> Can I just delete messages and it will be recreated?

That will probably not work. The reference to messages will disappear,
but the file will still be there until the klogd or syslogd (I forget
which one) close it. Better to let logrotate do it. If you run 24/7,
look for /var/log/messages.[1-4] and their dates. The messages.1 should
be no more than a week old. Otherwise, that is what is not working.

Here is part of df output for my machine: /dev/sda7
489833 23853 440680 5% /var
so maybe, if you use your machine as I do, about 30,000 blocks are
needed for /var. I give it a lot more, but I have a lot of disk space
available for that. Most of it is used in /var/lib, especially
/var/lib/rpm. YMMV.

I am looking for an ODBC driver to connect to an MS Access file under
Linux. A free (or cheap) one. I can find things like ODBC bridges
that will let me connect to an NT box. I can find an ODBC driver that
is almost $700 that claims to read Access (and scores of others I don't
need). And I have found an SDK kit for more money than I can spend.
Any help?

Might I suggest that you talk to a typical user: They think Windows is
great. These are the very same people who snap up upgrades as soon as
released. Don't ask your fellow Linuxer what he thinks about Microsoft,
that is a known.

The last time I bought Windows, bundled with WinWord, was almost 10
years ago. It was installed on a system built from components; as all
my systems have been. There are a plethora of vendors who will custom
build a system, sans OS. In your own words "The illegal vendor
licensing plans" was a _plan_ and _illegal_. It did _not_ happen,
it could not happen: Building PCs is a garage operation. Think!

By the way you need to upgrade your memory: Microsoft unveiled Windows
on November of 1983, and it was not shipped until November of 1985.
I know someone who bought this "very buggy" software, his words.
Somethings never change :-) Would not that make Windows available
for less than 15 years. After all the IBM PC was not introduced until
August of 1981, just 19 years ago. I purchased 13 of these machines
in 1982, for my employer, with DOS, CP/M, and WordStar (of course).

Remember: Apple has been around about 24 year and offers a non
Microsoft/Intel alternative. Didn't they offer the GUI first?
There have always been choices; even the choice not to choose.
Linux is alive and well, thanks to Linus and others.

I apologize for burdening you with the facts.

It's not like you need all that much performance for the basic apps
(memo, todo, datebook, addressbook) anyway.

You weren't reading very carefully....

/opt is reserved for the installation of add-on application
    software packages.

(such as Applix etc. I guess [my note])

A package to be installed in /opt shall locate its static files in
    a separate /opt/<package> directory tree, where <package> is a
name that describes the software package.

Programs to be invoked by users shall be located in the directory
/opt/<package>/bin. If the package includes UNIX manual pages,
they shall be located in /opt/<package>/man and the same
substructure as /usr/share/man shall be used.

    The directories /opt/bin, /opt/doc, /opt/include, /opt/info,
/opt/lib,and /opt/man are reserved for local system administrator
use. Packages may provide "front-end" files intended to be placed
in (by linking or copying) these reserved directories by the local
system administrator, but shall function normally in the absence
    of these reserved directories.

Package files that are variable (change in normal operation)
should be installed in /var/opt. See the section on /var/opt for
    more information.

Host-specific configuration files should be installed in
/etc/opt. See the section on /etc for more information.

No other package files should exist outside the /opt, /var/opt,and
/etc/opt hierarchies except for those package files that must
reside in specific locations within the filesystem tree in order
to function properly. For example, device lock files must be
placed in /var/lock and devices must be located in /dev.

Distributions may install software in /opt, but should not modify
or delete software installed by the local system administrator
without the assent of the local system administrator.

FHS says this about /usr:

No large software packages should use a direct subdirectory under
the /usr hierarchy. An exception is made for the X Window System
because of considerable precedent and widely-accepted
practice. This section of the standard specifies the location for
    most such packages.

    [snip]

The /usr/local hierarchy is for use by the system administrator
when installing software locally. It needs to be safe from being
overwritten when the system software is updated. It may be used
for programs and data that are shareable amongst a group of hosts,
    but not found in /usr.

I say Mozilla. Not quite there, but close, and damn nice. Even the
nightly builds are usable.

I say mutt.

 -extremely stable
 -extremely fast
 -extremely flexible/configurable

By far the most powerful mail handling system in the known universe:

 fetchmail -> procmail -> mutt

Hi,

I've (happily) used for months the "RH PPP" dialer (RP3, I think it's
called) to connect to the Internet. Recently, I have changed my initdefault
from 5 (X) to 3 (text) in /etc/inittab, and started using startx to
initialize the X server.

Now anytime I do this and then start RP3 I get an error that it couldn't
start the interface. So I tried putting the initdefault to 5 again, and
everything worked fine. Is there anything I can do to have it work with
initdefault 3?

(Forgot to mention that I start RP3 from the bar applet. Maybe that's
what's wrong...)

Thanks in advance for any help!
