What does/doesn't Fetchmail do?

I currently use Fetchmail to grab mail for me from three different POP3
accounts (could be 4 - I just don't use the fourth; yet). It puts all my
mail into my mail spool, where Pine can access, filter, and sort all mail
by destination. I have three different signatures - one per account, and
Pine automagically decides for me which one to use when responding.

The version of Fetchmail I have now is 5.3.0, compiled from source without
any intervention from myself. I untar'ed it, ./configure ; make ; su ; make
install and it was ready to go.

my .fetchmailrc file looks something like this;

set logfile ~/.fetchmail_log
poll first.host protocol pop3 username stewart password passwrd
poll secnd.host protocol pop3 username blackdeath password passwd2
poll third.host protocol pop3 username blackdeath password passwd3

I have a cron entry setup like so;

# Run Fetchmail every 30 minutes
*/30 * * * *                            fetchmail > /dev/null 2>&1

which, as the comment would imply, runs Fetchmail every 30 minutes.

Do a man fetchmail, man fetchmailconf, and if you're interested in
automating your receipt of POP3 mail - man 5 crontab.

My problem is: It wont start automatically.

My machine boots to a bash prompt in runlevel 5. It used to boot to
the RedHat login screen. (6.0 that is). As I sort have mentioned, I can
type 'startx' @ the bash prompt and X and Gnome start just as it did
from the login screen.

I know that I've done something to cause this and cannot figure out
what it is. I've configured sound by 'sndconf', installed Blackdown's
JDK, upgraded Netscape, and changed a few permissions for user to access
pppd and some other things.

Where can I learn more about system startup and initalization process?
I've read the How To's and related man pages.

Alternately:
I have fetchmail running in the background so it checks my
email every 10 minutes when I am online - add this line
to your .fetchmailrc:

set daemon 10

if you prefer having fetchmail time itself.

You will still have lilo, but you won't need your Windows partition
entry in /etc/lilo.conf

If you want, you can remove the entry for "dos" or whatever you labeled
it when installing and run lilo.

Yes you can. To do so, you need to mount the windows partition as a
"vfat" type of filesystem. After that, you can read and write files
(given the limitations of a DOS filesystem) just like the files in your
native linux file systems.

First, make sure that your assumption about being in run level 5 is
correct by checking /etc/inittab. While your are there, look at the
bottom of the file where it launches xdm (or its equivalent).

Next, take a look at the contents of /etc/X11/xdm and trace through the
scripts and config files. I think you will be able to find it from there.

The program that runs at startup is /usr/bin/gdm -nodaemon

try to run this command rather than `startx` and see what errors you may
get.

You may try looking through the /var/log/messages files for error
messages from gdb

First of all, are you sure it's at runlevel 5? Runlevel 5 is the X11
runlevel. It sounds like you are at runlevel 3. To check this, do
this.:

Edit your /etc/inittab file, pico is always a good choice.
type: pico /etc/inittab

Replace this line:

id:3:initdefault:

With this one:

id:5:initdefault:

Save your changes, and reboot the machine.

Now, if that doesn't work, something else is going on. My main problem
at first wasn't getting TO boot right into X, it was stopping it FROM
doing that. I love my command line :-D BTW, Red Hat has a 6.0
support section, it has alot of good information. If you go to
support, there is a link to RH6.0 help files.

Think I've got it now ...

SQUID requires that you set up a user named squid and a group named squid.
As well it is suggested to also have a group called squidadm. Am trying this
out.

You bet. You need to mount the filesystem with something like vfat. Do a
`man mount` Also, if you look at your /etc/fstab file you should find a
number of lines that show mounting to partitions that are ext2 file
systems. If you are duo booting, you can accessing the dos partition by
done the same thing - mount the partition using vfat instead of ext2.

You still need lilo as loader for linux. But you can reconfigure lilo by
editing /etc/lilo.conf and removing the entry for Windows. After that
you have to reinstall lilo by running it.

Writing a script for this is very symple:

First make a file (name it userfile).

in this file add all the information you need to add a user. one line
per user. All lines formated the same, ex:

        Jack Fell jfell bash
        Jill Fell jfell2 tcsh

The script would look something like this:

#!/usr/sh

while read firstname lastname userid shell

do

useradd -d /home/$userid -s $shell -c "$firstname $lastname -m $userid

done < userfile

#end script

In this example, when the script is run (by user root), 2 users would be
created jhill and jhill2. both users would have a locked password.

The script could be expanded to meet your needs.

Actually, the number in "set daemon" refers to the number of seconds, not
the number of minutes, so "set daemon 10" has fetchmail check mail every
10 seconds. :) To check mail every ten minutes, use "set daemon 600".

Hope this helps...

The *only* problem with this is: since I don't/won't run MS-Windows and
don't really have a clue how to do much in MS-Word, MS-Word would
*never* be a good choice for me. I have never needed any real template

go from there. Toss in the odd \vspace*{} from time to time. All from
a MicroEmacs window. Presto -- instant poster or flyer. Often in 10-20
minutes. In a second window I have tcsh with 'latex x;xdvi x' at the
tail of the history list -- where 'x' is the name of the 'one-of-a-kind,
print-and-forget' document. Actually 'print-and-forget' is something I
never do. Most of the time it is print-and-recycle -- I often will cp
previous-quick-doc.tex to new-quick-doc.tex and then fire up MicroEmacs

It is not too bad if you include '\usepackage{times}', which makes LaTeX

Subject: Telnet Emulator?
Date: Sat, 15 Jul 2000 18:36:32 GMT

Hello,

I am trying to connect to my Linux RedHat 6.1 with windows telnet
emulation.
Using standard telnet.exe I cannot use any of the function keys.
I have downloaded different software, and now I am not quite sure which
Terminal type I should use (VT102, VT400-7, or others); also there is a
whole list of Terminal IDs from VT100 to VT420)

Thanks for any suggestions
Jerzy

Amigo, you're absolutely right, but I wasn't though doing as telnet. My
main problem is, when I click 'kppp', it doesn't get me to kppp dialog
unless I am a 'root'. While as a non root user I launch a Terminal Emulator
and 'su -' then 'kppp &' to get me to kppp dialog and dial out. I have
this problem with Red Hat 6.2, Mandrake 7.1 and now Gentus ABIT 3.0 Linux
Release. The only distro I don't have this problem is Turbo Linux
workstation 6.0.2.

After creating '/etc/kppp.allow' still can't dial out unless I am a root.
