IIRC, ICS works by emulating a DHCP server. Try a "pump -i eth0" on
your RH 6.0 box. No need to reboot. See the HOWTOs at
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/ and http://linuxnewbie.org/ .

This is really an arse-backwards way of doing things, the Linux machine
should be the one connected to the Net. It can do firewall/NAT for
Lose9x clients behind it (read the IP-Masqing HOWTO) and most likely do
a better job.

Now it's clear you're talking about MS-DOS PCs. Ctrl+C doesn't stop
everything - there are system calls to capture Ctrl+C, and even if not
trapped Ctrl+C only works when there's an I/O call. There's no way
(other than BIG RED SWITCH) to break out of infinite loops that make no
I/O calls.

Also, Ctrl+C is system-dependent. Try it on a Mac. Or a mainframe
terminal. Just because your friend is using a keyboard connected to a
machine that could run MS-DOS doesn't mean MS-DOS conventions are
relevant to any other OS that machine might run.

I could fax using efax and print spooler in RH6.2 but I can't fax using
efax and print spooler in RH7.0
I modified the instructions from the efax man page for RH7.0, but I
still can't get it to work.

This command does not work for RH7.0
       (2) Edit /etc/printcap and add an entry such as:

              fax:lp=/dev/null:sd=/var/spool/fax:if=/usr/bin/faxlpr:

to define a printer called "fax". Print files will be
spooled to the
/var/spool/fax (sd=) directory and then piped to the
/usr/bin/faxlpr filter
       (if=).

Here is fax section for my /etc/printcap for RH7.0 but still does not
work for efax

fax:\
        :lp=/dev/null:\
        :sd=/var/spool/fax:\
        :if=/usr/bin/faxlpr:

Is there something I have to do to make it work?

Use lilo

 according to http://www.appwatch.com/Linux/App/46/data.html

LILO is a versatile boot loader for Linux. It does not depend on a
specific file system, can boot Linux kernel images from floppy
disks and from hard disks and can even act as a "boot manager" for other
operating systems like PC/MS-DOS, DR DOS,
OS/2, Windows 95, Windows NT, 386BSD, SCO UNIX, Unixware and others
(FreeBSD is a version of 386BSD)

My guess is that you're absolutely correct and user error is the problem.
I'm just insufficiently motivated to figure out exactly what the error is.

Hey, no need to be mean, I never claimed to be a god. I run that version
because the guy that wrote the Lexar driver wrote it specifically for that
kernel and I've seen no reason to change yet.

Glad to hear it, because you will be given ample opportunity to prove that
you mean it. When I used to read resumes for a living I noted that the
people who included a line about seeking challenges were almost invariably
new grads. Older people realize that there are already plenty of
challenges available without making efforts to find new ones. YMMV, of
course.

Hey, you're just doing your job! I'f I'd known about the pitfalls of
rootishness when I first started using it, I would probably have done
things differently. At this point, however, it's just too big a pain to

I had the following setup: Doze98 on hda1, ext2 /boot on hda2, BSD on
hda3, and the partitions for a number of Linux distros scattered
about on hdb. What I ended up doing was putting the BSD bootloader on
the MBR of hda, with LILO set up on the bootsector of hda2. The BSD
loader could then boot 98 or BSD with one keypress, while booting Linux
required 2.

You can achieve similar results by installing the BSD bootloader on the
bootsector of the BSD partition, then having lines like so in lilo.conf
, assuming you want LILO as the primary bootloader:

other=/dev/hda3 # BSD partition goes here
   label=bsd       # or whatever
   table=/dev/hda

Unfortunately, this might mean 2 levels of menus to go through to get to
your OS of choice. No one ever said multibooting was easy :-]

I find Mozilla 0.8 pretty decent overall. My choice of mail and news would
not excite you though. I like slrn for news and mutt for mail. I don't
particularly like the all-in-one approach anymore. When I did windows...
man, when was that? Well, when I did OS/2 I used a kind of all one program
called Mr2ice. Thats a slick program :)

Evolution is looking good though; but I probably will never use it for many
of the dependency reasons you name. I'm not big on gnome or kde these days.
I could probably never use outlook again or agent. I like a client I can
ssh to several machines I have accounts on and read mail there without
some clumsy GUI that gets in the way. Same with news. I tend to travel a
bit and ssh to my home system or run leafnode and read news non-stop on the
road and then post it when I have internet access on the road or when I get
home.

If you want to see some up and coming email clients of the GUI ilk, visit
the gnome home pages (www.gnome.org) and take a look at their mail client
lists. Balsa and Spruce seem to be coming along well. Pronto has looked
kind of cool for awhile; but I tend to stick with the mongrel.

This has been reported several times to the mailing list and on

What color depth are you attempting to run at? There are some notes about
wabi have issues with 24bbpp color depths I believe. I used to run a

Thanks for pointing that out. Looks like I was careless when I

I have been running Junkbuster-2.0.2-8 with Netscape 4.75 under
RH6.2 for some time with no problems.

I recently updated to Netscape 4.76. The browser now hangs when
I first try to go on line. The message in the lower tray is
"Connect: Looking up host: localhost". It appears that the
browser and Junkbuster are not communicating.

If I temporarily disable Junkbuster, go to a URL, then re-enable
the proxy, Junkbuster works as it is supposed to.

The Netscape Manual HTTP and Security proxies are set to
localhost, Port 8000. Junkbuster is configured to use port 8000.

Ideas? Thanks.
