Linux does use a full memory model as mention in the kernel docs
(any free memory are wasted memory). Unused memory will go into
various caches, hence the value of free memory means absolutely
nothing. When a program starts and request memory, the kernel
will reclaim memory from caches that having excess memory.

Even Windows 9x use this model, however memory mostly goes to the
disk cache (vcache) and have problem not releasing it when needed.

There are tools to find out memory leaks in your own program, try
search on "memory leak" on freshmeat.net.

All you need to know is how much physical ram + swap. In the case
of programming, you might want to look at ulimit and resource limit.
However, memory management is the job of the kernel, not the
programmer, unless you are programming kernel interface...etc.

Aterm and Eterm can be compiled to include Big-5 support, it works
great (unless you use the so-called vga font).

I'd love to have your problems. Your number is about 5 DM for 4 liters
(just make is simple). About 1.25 DM per liter. The actual price in Germany
(depending on the octane number) is about 1.80-2.05 DM per liter.

I have tried to install mysql using the src download rpm and ran the
rpm --rebuild filename.src.rpm. The mysql download page suggests this
method for my version of redhat (5.2)
The rebuild went correctly with no apparent errors. What I dont know is
whether this --rebuild command needs to be followed by a manual copying of
the files to their correct location...or was that achieved during the
rebuild.

I cannot tell if this has happened because there was another copy of mysql
already installed. (Same version but it was for RH6.1)

I get an error message when I use mysql start "unable to connect to local
mysql server through socket /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock"

Could be you're using the Graphic install and it's not configuring your

Try typing

text <ENTER>

at the boot screen

You don't need to 're-build the kernel', since the driver for the
Adaptec SCSI 1542CF controller is a module. Just shutdown the machine,
install the new hardware, then fire the box up. Use the kernelcfg
command to load a new module: select 'Add', select type
'scsi_hostadapter' and then aha1542. Reboot the system and there you are.

It is far better to set up the bash init files correctly.

Aliases are not inherited by sub-shells, and only a login shell
reads /etc/profile (see the man page for bash). Running
an xterm (or any other terminal emulator) with a shell under
X will not normally read /etc/profile and will not have any
aliases which are defined in that file.

Hence, /etc/profile is not the place to put an alias intended
to be available to sub-shells (such as bash exec'ed by xterm).

Per the man page for bash, *login* shells read /etc/profile and
then the first of ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login, or ~/.profile.
Clearly none of those are the right place to put aliases.

*Non-login* shells source ~/.bashrc if they are _interactive_, and
read a file specified by the ENV environment variable if they are
_non-interactive_.

The proper place to put aliases... is the ~/.bashrc file, and
whichever of the ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login, or ~/.profile
files is used should source the ~/.bashrc file and set the ENV
variable. If it is desired that non-interactive shells have the
aliases which are defined in ~/.bashrc, then it is reasonable to
just set ENV=~/.bashrc to give both interactive and
non-interactive files the same environment.

The /etc/profile file should have only a default _minimal_ setup
that is common for system wide sh, bash and ksh login shells
(other shells might also source it too). It is *not* a good
place to creatively customize a shell interface.

Of the three files which might be sourced in the user's home
directory, note that ~/.profile is also used by at least sh and
ksh, and hence might not normally be suitable for bash specific
configuration. With a very little creative work though, it can
be used for multiple shells. It's probably just as easy to use
one of the other two for bash and leave .profile for sh and ksh.
However, here is a way to be shell specific in .profile,

########## start of ~/.profile ##############
  if [ "${0}" = "-bash" -o `basename "${0}"` = "bash" ]
  then
        ENV=$HOME/.bashrc;export ENV
        . $HOME/.bashrc
  fi

  if [ "${0}" = "-su" -o `basename "${0}"` = "su" ]
  then
        ENV=$HOME/.bashrc;export ENV
        . $HOME/.bashrc
  fi

  if [ "${0}" = "-sh" -o `basename "${0}"` = "sh" ]
  then
        ENV=$HOME/.shrc;export ENV
        . $HOME/.shrc
  fi

  if [ "${0}" = "-ksh" -o `basename "${0}"` = "ksh" ]
  then
        ENV=$HOME/.kshrc;export ENV
        . $HOME/.kshrc
  fi
############ end of ~/.profile ############

That is the sum total of my own ~/.profile file. Two other
obvious things should go into that file if they are needed, a
PATH that is different from what is defined in /etc/profile and
any stty commands or similar terminal setup commands which are
needed only the first time the terminal connects to the system.
Note that a PATH can be added to in this file by using the
PATH="\newbin:$PATH" technique, which should not be done in
~/.bashrc (or the ENV file if it is different). With the
latter two files PATH will be added again and again with each
sub-shell.

There are other ways to configure the init files for bash, but
this one is about as simple as it gets while still allowing for
enough flex to let things work right.

I hardly dare to ask, but what reports 'df -i' ?
And: Are you still able to 'rm' files ?
(perhaps you ran out of inodes, although that is quite unlikely
at 18% used space.)

That works, but is unnecessary and might not even be advisable.
Once you have logged in there is no point in re-sourcing
/etc/profile and which ever of the bash init files you use in
your home directory. Typically those files have terminal init
commands which need to be run only one time to initialize,
configure or even select a terminal. Executing those commands
with each xterm shell is unnecessary and might prevent easily
using commands that are slow, have an unwanted effect on xterms,
or require interactive response. While it is true that those
are an unlikely scenario on a typical home pc it still makes
sense to configure the system correctly just in case there is
ever a desire to hang some who-knows-what-kind of terminal onto
a serial port, which would then require the entire shell init
system to need a reconfiguration.

>Yes, "-fg red" on the root xterm looks ugly, but at least it keeps me
>on my toes. ;-)

Lord! I don't think I'd ever get anything done right as root if
I did that, but it sure is an alarm clock!

I typically put the user's name in the prompt, and have different
colors for normal user's prompts (cyan) and a root prompt (white)
(against a black background with text that is goldenrod1).

 Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) has
become a hot topic among large companies. With the
advent of ERP systems, the Web, and other online
business systems, companies have recognized a need
to connect systems and automate business processes.
Numerous companies provide consulting and products to
meet the EAI needs of Fortune 500 companies. In this
presentation, Stephen Asbury will discuss some of the
ways smaller companies and departments can use Linux
as a platform for application integration.

Asbury will focus on basic architectures for integration,
including messaging middleware, directory services and
CORBA. The product focus will be on shareware, freeware
and do-it-yourself-ware that can be deployed on Linux to
integrate the existing systems. All code examples will
be in Java, although attendees are not expected to have
 Java programming experience.

Stephen Asbury is the co-founder and Chief Technology
Officer of Paradigm Research, a Silicon Valley training
company. As the key technology resource for PRI, Asbury
has designed, developed and delivered training for
software developers at numerous Fortune 1000 companies
including Sun, HP, IBM, SGI, Ford, Chrysler and Netscape.
In the last three years, PRI, under Asbury's technical
leadership, has partnered with several key EAI product
vendors to teach their customers how to integrate
 enterprises and automate business processes.

Asbury is the lead author of six books covering

Hi ...
I've succesfully connect to my ISP using pppd (with all the scripts,
i.e. pap-secret, options, net-chat, etc..). That was when I haven't got
kppp. But now, I can't make kppp works. It dialed, however it never
succesfully connect to my ISP. When I compared logs with 'manual' pppd
and kppp, there were something wrong early in the expect-send mechanism.
(I attached both logs). For instance, it seems that kppp's log don't get
anything from modem (there was never "--got it" word!).
kppp setting - /dev/ttyS1, lock, RTSCTS, CR/LF....
Of all the setting above, I don't remember to have any CR/LF setting in
pppd's options file. I've tried all combination of CR, LF but still
nothing works. Hence, I assume it wasn't because of this option. I don't
put anything in script section(of kppp) since I think it will use my
net-chat file. I hope I was right :)
What amazed me was that kppp says it has been connected to my ISP. (It
says CONNECT 115200 in the kppp debug window). How come it says it got
connected to ISP while there was no single '--got it' word in
/var/log/ppp? Please .... eliminate my confusion. Obviously I don't
really understand how to set the kppp program .......
thanks in advance.

where do houston's inner city poor go for health care? all that state
o' d'art, hi-capitalisation stuff is ABSOLUTELY USELESS for the
majority of houston's residents. (and indeed, it has to be that way)

own.

oh, yeah, and why was pinochet in england and not in houston?

he wasn't sick? oh...
