Subject: installing soundblaster live! value driver
Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000 20:30:25 GMT

I followed someones directions on installing a driver for my soundblaster
live! value sound card under Red Hat Linux 6.2 Delux, kernel 2.2.14-5. It
did not work because "depmod -a" was not recognized. however,
my "modutils" is installed and should work. below is a copy of the script
durring my last installation attempt. if anyone can see where I went wrong
or has a better idea, I really, really would appreciate it before I throw
this thing out the window.Again, please note that I have installed Red Hat
Linux 6.2 deluxe, kernel 2.2.14-5, and am trying to get my SoundBlaster
live! Value sound card working.

This is the result of my find / -name depmod print

Subject: Help about setting up commercial web server
Date: Fri, 9 Jun 2000 23:44:55 +0300

Hello and sorry for bad English.
I want to make commercial web hosting. I'm going to lease a dedicated server
(if you know which is the cheaper please tell) and want to host .com domains
. Is it possible to charge users by how much web traffic they use? Can I
make account set up process automatic. Can you tell me which programs are
best for this, I don't know linux very deeply (I can install programs). And
most important considering that I don't have a firm (and I'm in Turkey) is
it possible to accept credit cards ?
Thank you so much.

Yes, but many (most?) terminal servers don't even start ppp until they
are told to or until they see ppp frames coming from the other end.
OTOH, there is no law that it has to give you a "username" prompt
either. That stuff is all fully adjustable on all popular term
servers.

Just set it up to use PAP and try again. I don't use Freeweb, but
people here say it does work if you do that.

Subject: Pop Not Popping

We are running linux with sendmail. Periodically the pop3 fails. I can
telnet hostname 110 and fail to get a connection. Then if I reboot the
machine we get connected. Then after a while it stops connecting. I
installed qpopper3 which replaced v 2.5 but to no avail. Is their a better
way to do this - The boss says get an NT server but I dont wanna. Any and
all help appreciated

It's possible that if you send a carriage return to their server, then
it will offer you a (useless) password prompt, but if you send the ppp
handshake then it will respond with ppp.

Some ISPs use this method.

More or less.

Yes.

: that LILO is a program that copies the boot-loader into MBR that

Yes.

: actually loads linux ???

Yes. Just as you would be correct in saying that an operating system
loads a program address into a cpu register which then sets its program
counter to run from there.

: Are bootstrap loader the same as boot-loader? ... there are so
: many different terms used nowadays.

Well, probably. I don't know exactly what you mean by either term.

: This file cannot be the same in all disturbution right? But how

Oh, the file you refer to is more or less the same in all distributions
alright.

: come some documentation suggests copying the file from another

Machine code. It's a bootsector.

: 2) When lilo is run, a map file is generated as specified by
: map=boot/map. This file tells the system where to find the
: kernel, right?

Mmmph. This is a detail of lilos operation that i don't know without
looking up. I'm not sure if the location of the map file or the
locations in the map file are saved in the boot sector. I presume just
the location of the map file is (so it has to be within 1024 cyl, etc.).

: 3) Lastly, do I have to run lilo again when my kernel is upgraded
: and there is no changed in the new kernel image 's name or path?

Yes. You might have copied a new one into the /boot directory and
renamed it to the old. Thus it would have different location on disk.
