If syslogd is running try ...
kill -HUP `cat /var/run/syslogd.pid`

If syslogd is not running then start it.

Those are the only two things I can think
of at the moment.

Hello,
I have Windows 95. I am planing to add LInux in my PC but the problem is
there are frequent power cuts ion our city. The power cuts does not create
any problem even if my PC is on in case of windows 95 as it simply runs the
scandisk when PC restarts agian. What about linux ? Will linux create any
problem if computer goes off when linux is on ?
Please help me. Should i Install linux.

Linux also fixes disk errors during booting if the hard drives are not cleanly
unmounted.

In any case, it is not a good idea to leave PC on if the power goes off
frequently.
It will damage the hard disks.

If Linux crashes, it can be a bit of a trickier situation... after a loss
of power, crash, etc., Linux runs fsck, which will check the integrity of
your file system, a little like scandisk. At the very least, you will have
a wait a very long time for your system to run these checks, and then it
will boot. I'm not really sure what happens if a process is running and the
power goes out suddenly, as this has never happened to me. On the upside,
Linux doesn't crash often at all. It is a very good OS, and I would
recommend it.

However, if your power goes out often, you might invest in a UPS
(uninterrruptable power supply) for your computer whether you install Linux
or not, because sudden power-offs aren't good no matter what OS you run.

I believe that the howtos and linux documentation projects are more
useful than most
published books. Besides, some books are just collections of howtos.

hmm, I played with mandrake 7 for a week or 2. I believe
when the lilo prompt comes up you type in "floppy" (minus
the quotes) and press enter. When the lilo prompt first
comes up, press tab and it should show you your options.
I'm almost positive there should be a choice named floppy
with a defualt mandrake 7 install.

I would stay away from these distros.
The run out of a FAT partition, and are therefore a lot slower than what
they would have been in a native Linux partition.
I don't consider any of them serious Linux distributions - more like people
who jumped on the bandwagon to grab all that CASH.

Merits
- supposedly easy to set up (not that REAL linux distibutions are hard)
- no partitioning required (also not very hard)

Demerits
- slow
- more likely to damage your Windows partition if something goes wrong.
- more likely to be damaged by your Windows installation - eg disk
defragmenting / scandisk
- quality? Are these fly-by-night distros?
- lack of pride / people laughing behind your back

Seriously, the small additional effort required to get a real distro going
is well worth it.

Subject: Kernel recompile - cannot read from CDROM
Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2000 08:49:48 +0200

Hello.

I re-compiled my linux kernel (2.0.35), after which I was unable to read
from my CDROM. So I went back into make menuconfig, configured the
filesystems. I added every single one there is as a module the first time,
the second time I make ISO9660, MSDOS, and UMSDOS as built-in to the kernel.

So, now when I try mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom, it tells me to specify the fs
type (never needed to do this). So I do it, mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom -t
iso9660, it says iso9660 not recognized by linux kernel.

I go into lisa (to add more software packages), select "Select Installation
Source", "CDROM", then it tells me :
"module isofs.o
This kernel module could not be loaded or initialised"

I looked in /lib/modules/2.0.35/fs, the file isofs.o is there.

I compiled the kernel with the following commands :

make dep; make clean; make zImage; make modules; make modules_install

The only way I get to read from my CD drive now is booting from the old
kernel (I kept a backup!!!).

Please help me!

I guess that's it; I used /c: as my win32 drive so will have to call it
something else for ease of use. Making ':' special might affect tar as I
believe they used to use : as an indicator for special kinds of file eg
remote directories etc.

In any case, I'm not ready to take on hacking kernel code. I was

However, I did learn some new utils. nm, depmod, & lsmod were all new

This can be used as a builtin true function instead of /bin/true like in

while :
do
        whatever forever
done

This has been a builtin function also in good old Bourne shell as well
as Korn shell.
