Subject: LG and Goldstar CDRs & Audio - Here's how...

I was trying to get this to work yesterday and noticed that there had
been a large number of posts to this forum on this subject, as a result of
a few hours research and managing to extract the universal language of
code from a German web page, here's how.....

To everyone who has been asking on this forum, it is possible to write
audio CDs from wav files on the LG and Goldstar CED-8081B drives using
cdrdao...

 1. You must be using .cdr or .wav files, for those writing from MP3
(ahem) this script will work for you...

============================
#!/bin/sh

for i in "$@"

do
        mpg123 --cdr - "$i" > "$i".cdr
done
============================

 2. Get hold of the wav2dao perl script from

        http://www.daszler.de/linux/wav2dao.

        2.1 Make it executable

 3. Get cdrdao from

        http://cdrdao.sourceforge.net/

        3.1 Compile cdrdao

 4. ./wav2dao.pl -n -o mycd.toc *.cdr

 5. cdrdao write --device 0,1,0 --driver generic-mmc --speed 8 --buffers
256 mycd.toc

Obviously the devices need to be changed to reflect your system.

Hope that this helps everyone ;)

     Regards
      Dan

How can I split a linux partition into 2 partitions. It's kinda hard to
explain why I need to do this. I know there is a dos utility that can cut
some of a FAT partition off, but what about linux? Thanks in advance.

AOL will run under MacOS (not sure about OSX), so whatever they do it
doesn't require Windows. AOL's site doesn't make it clear whether the
Mac version will run under OSX. If it will, there is a possibility it
might work under Linux.

Nope. That's not fetchmail's job. It just talks to a POP or IMAP
server, neither of which cares what the content of the messages is. You'd
be better off preprocessing it on the server, perhaps with procmail.
Alternately, perhaps you could send out the messages such that bounces go
into a different mailbox than (presumably human-generated) responses.

Hmmm, after my 7.0 box crashed I've decided to install 7.1. Worked
fine.
I was curious about the kernel packet filtering and enabled the
firewall
while installing - leaving only http, ftp, ssh and smtp open.

Seemed ok. But after installing my proftpd (I don't like wu-ftpd for
some good reason) I was unable to ftp my box. Neither out or in....

So I disabled EVERYTHING (ipchains, iptables even the infamous
"disable fireall" option in linuxconf)

But still no connect....

The proftp demon works fine. I can ssh in and out and the Apache runs
just perfect.

So what am I doing wrong?

Is there a way to disable the kernel packet filter? Or do I have to
reinstall
everything?

Thanx

Hi. What is the bare minumum of software needed for linux to boot to bash.
I am going to install linux on a computer with very little hardisk space
(about 100 MB). Is it possible? I don't think Redhat installer will
install the bare minimum, so I need to do it myself. I know this will be a
little complicating (since I'm not a linux expert), so is there any website
you know of that will give some light on what I'm trying to do? Thanks in

You can't split it. You can shrink it using gnu parted. But I don't
know why you don't simply back it up, carve it up, and restore.

You know perfectly well what he's saying. The retard would be you if
you didn't get it, but you do. He recommended his editor of choice,
now I'd also suggest vim and netscape, operating in tandem. I see
precisely what I get (in netscape) that way.

What do you mean "plain msdos"? dmsdos is an extension that allows use
of msdos stackered or compressed filesystems, yes. So what? It runs
over the vfat layer. If you run umsdos over dmsdos, you'll find that
long filenames are converted to vfat names, instead of fat nanes,
which is what you want. Here are the kernel config options:

   CONFIG_MSDOS=m
   CONFIG_UMSDOS_FS=m
   CONFIG_DMSDOS_FS=m
   CONFIG_UMSDOS_UPON_DMSDOS=y

> find init while vfat can.

Filesystems do not "find" anything. Kindly express yourself in a manner
that doesn't require advanced telepathic guesswork to fathom what you
mean! When you run umsdos as root, the kernel looks for /sbin/init
in the /linux subdirectory of the root. Be careful with capitalization.
It doesn't matter what layer underlies umsdos. If you bollixed the
umsdos directory files (probably by creating them with fat names and then
trying to read them with vfat names, or v.v), fix 'em yourself, but don't
start accusing the rest of the world of causing your mistakes!

Date: 6 Jun 2001 17:05:45 -0400

I work exclusively on Unix/Linux, but I need to send some important
documents in Microsoft Word format as e-mail attachments, to
recipients who work exclusively on MS Windows. This is something I
will have to do a lot of in the coming month, so I am trying to find a
solution that I can implement from within Linux.

I rarely need to send attachments with my e-mail, and when I do I just
use the attachment feature in my mail reader (Pine). I just learned,
however, that MS Windows mail readers (or at least some of them)
receive the attachment as "gibberish" appended at the end of the
e-mail's text, instead of appearing as a clickable link to bring it
up in MS Word.

Is there a way within Linux to attach these word documents to my
e-mail so that the Windows-bound recipient has no difficulty reading
them?

Many thanks!!!

No. He stated the simple truth.

There is no WYSIWYG program for HTML, regardless of the OS used.
HTML was never designed for anything even remotely close to that,
and since there is almost no standard that today's browsers are
following above HTML3, whatever you write in HTML may or may
not look the way it was intended to be.

>Plenty of them out there,

No.

Yes, there are plenty of editors. XEmacs could do all of that.
So would amaya. But no editor on earth can create WYSIWYG HTML
code, as that's a paradoxon.

Using XFree86 4.0.2 and Caldera eDesktop 2.4. I ran XFree86 -configure to
generate a XF86Config file, but there is no video resolutions listed in the
file that was generated. The X server works, but how does it know what
resolution to use "800x600" "1024x768" etc... ?

I can't seem to cut and paste right now so I cant past the "Screen" section
of XF86Config so here is just one display setting

SubSection "Display"
        Depth 8
EndSubSection

This is all it has for each depth setting. There is no Modes, which I thought
it was set the resolution. So how is the resolution being set?

Problem solved!

As Markku wrote, there was a default firewall set-up. I used the
command "lokkit", set the configuration to "no firewall" (this machine is
already behind a firewall - so only the local LAN can access it anyways).
I then found that I had to logout of the machine, log back in, and restart
x. Thanks a lot to all who wrote telling me of the many steps to a
solution.

Thanks for your idea, but how exactly can I do that? using tar? Then,
after I reorganize the partitions, how can I untar the files again? I do
have a windows partition on that computer, soI can put the .tar file there
while I repartition the filesystem. How would you do this?

People who work exclusively in Windows are well able to read pdf's, ps's
or plain text - no need for a proprietary format that is useless as soon
as your co-workers version of Word differ from each other.

This is either an problem on your end (ie pine does not attach files
properly) or on their end (whatever they're using to read the mail does
not display attachments properly). To check the first case, just CC
yourself and see if you get the message with an attachment.

If the problem is on the other end, well, tough luck for the
windows-users.

any RFC compliant mail-client will happily let you do that, and I assume
pine does it fine as well.
