I'm having problems getting the firewall modules to work correctly with the
2.4.1 kernel under RedHat 7.0.

When I try to use the modules, this is what happens:

[root@naboo /root]# depmod -a
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/lib/modules/2.4.1/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack.o

I can't even fall back to the old IPCHAINS way. Trying to use ip_tables doesn't
work as I get the same problems with the modules.

What exactly is causing my problems with the modules and the unresolved symbols?
I can't seem to find any reference as to what is needed. I've searched high and
low for FAQs and HOWTOs on this.

Also, is there a HOWTO similiar to the IP-CHAINS HOWTO for IP_TABLES and how to
set up a firewall? Or, is it the same as IP_CHAINS?

Thanks for any help in this matter.

If you compiled your own kernel, did you do all of these:

        make dep bzImage modules modules_install

The other issue is that you need up-to-date versions of various
utilities especially ``modutils''. See:

        /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes

That would be a relief. This trend lately of companies coming up with

**** Post for FREE via your newsreader at post.usenet.com ****

I recently installed Redhat Linux 7 on my computer but I was unable to set
up my ISA PnP internal modem(Wearnes MediaSurf 56K DSP, ESS chip).

I tried pnpdump, isapnp, setserial and modemconf but none seemed to work.
pnpdump -c>/etc/isapnp.cof; isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf generated a check error
but I was able to let it pass if I delete the "(CHECK)"'s. Nevertheless I
could not see that the designated irq and ports are utilized and setserial
failed.

I think my modem is not a winmodem so there should be a way to correctly set
it up. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks a lot.

Thanks - that cracked it. It was the libc-5 that was needed.

Recompiling from source was not an option as WABI was an off-the-shelf app
from Sun Microsystems and Caldera. Source code was never available.

WABI does now try to start up, but fails with some X error. Still, that
is a lot better than yesterday! The X error returned is:-

Unrecoverable Error in Wabi

X Window System Error: 86 Sequence=130, Value=0x2400007

Wabi will exit now.

Thanks again.

ldd will produce the following: (print shared library dependencies)
ldd `which bash`
  libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x4001e000)
  libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40021000)
  /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2
(0x40000000)
see "man ldd".

Subject: Re: Squid Proxy Server?
Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2001 04:50:44 -0800

Looks like I'm not entirely correct in how I've said it. SQUID supports FTP
as long as the requests arrive at SQUID from the client in http format. If
you are using an FTP client that does not talk http then SQUID simply won't
receive a request.

Check out the manual at
http://squid-docs.sourceforge.net/latest/html/x94.htm
In particular I cut the following section out:

*Supported Client Protocols
*Squid supports the following incoming protocol request types (when the
proxy requests are sent in HTTP format)
*HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which is the specification that the WWW
is based on.
*File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
*Gopher
*Wide Area Information (?Server?) (WAIS) (With the appropriate relay
server.)
*Secure Socket Layer - which is used for secure online transactions.

Note that it says "(when the proxy requests are sent in HTTP format)". Now
take a look at http://squid-docs.sourceforge.net/latest/html/x87.htm
In particular I cut the following section out:

*What Squid is not
*Squid acts only as an HTTP proxy. It is not a general purpose proxy (so it
cannot normally take the place of a firewall proxy.
*Squid is based on the HTTP/1.1 specification. Squid can only proxy for
programs that use this protocol for Internet access. *Browsers, for example,
use this specification; their primary function is the display of retrieved
web data, using the HTTP *protocol.
*FTP clients, on the other hand, often support proxy servers, but do not
communicate with them using the HTTP protocol. *These clients will not be
able to understand the replies that Squid sends.

Note that it says "FTP clients, on the other hand, often support proxy
servers, but do not communicate with them using the HTTP protocol".

So I guess SQUID does support FTP, but of course SQUID only works when the
incoming protocol requests are in HTTP format.

You have a weird theory.
Why do you think it's not on the first drive?

Besides that, there's no size limit like 16M for /boot.
I have no idea where you got that idea.
The problem is probably that hda1 (I suppose you windows C: drive?)
exceeds cylinder 1024 (Just as lilo says)

Either update lilo, or continue booting the way you do now.
Which way is that? I would really like to know. From floppy by any
chance?

And are you sure about the error mesage you got?
Does it really complain about hda4 (0x0304) or did it say 0x0302
What OS is on hda4? post `fdisk -l /dev/hda` if you want more input

Hi,

I just tried to install Helix Gnome but I couldn't choose local
harddrive since the next button was greyed out.
I looked in the FAQ on Ximian's site and they spoke about a file and
that you should download the updated installer.
Funny thing is that I downloaded it today through the same menu as they
suggested as a solution.

Any suggestions ?

I'm using Red Hat 7.0

Anyone know of a performance monitoring tool for Linux (or other UNIX
variants) similar to the Windows NT/2000 Performance Monitor? I need to
monitor several "counters" over a period of time, and log them to a file
for later analysis...

Thanks in advance.

Last I checked, it supported neither transactions, nor online backups.
As a matter of fact, *none* of the open source DBs I checked did. Has
there been change on that front?

Yup, same as I've done for years. Kind of weird.

I just did this and I'm currently recompiling. Hopefully, this will help.

Thanks! I'll take a gander over there.

Thanks for all the help...
