Hi all,

I have a small problem with rxvt: on my laptop (compaq armada 1530DM) when
I display a file with less and I try to scroll down/up some page, it hangs
up for quite a few seconds.
This is terribly annoying and it forces me to use xterm, but the point is
that I have just 16Mb of ram, so I would to save as ram as possible. Thus
it would be better to use rxvt.

The strange thing, moreover, is that I have the same version of rxvt
(2.6.0) on my desktop and there I don't have the problem.

Any suggestion?

Is it safe to go into a binary directory (/bin, /usr/bin/, et al) and do
strip * on that directory?  I am slowly running out of space on /usr and
don't have any space to relocate any directories to.. :(  I'm thinking
stripping all of my binaries might free up a bit of space.

Are there any consequences besides no debugging?  It'd suck to have to
recompile a buncha stuff.. :)  And obviously I don't have the space to
backup the stuff first.  (And here's the best part, I don't even have a
way to back the system up at all!)

I'm not going to do it unless someone says it's fine to do..  I had a
nasty experience with the Rawhide glibc 2.1.3 RPM (*EVERYTHING*
segfaulted..  no init 1, anything..) so I'm not in a hurry to have
another coronary when the system barfs.  (btw, the fix wasn't too
difficult, I booted off of the Red hat 6.1 CD in text mode, went to a
console, mounted my root drive as /rewt, /usr, /usr/local, etc..  and
did a rpm -Uvh --oldpackage --root=/rewt glibc...  Thankfully that
worked.)

Colleagues,

I am setting up Linux systems as a demo at my school.  I am using a
2.0.x kernel in a system called "Monkey linux".  Basically, I have 2
machines side by side on the same piece of cable; they can ping one
another, but traceroute waits indefinately.  I suspect the route is
not right.  I would appreciate your wise advice ... who what
diagnositics I could run.  E-mail repsonse to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
would be best.

I am setting the system up by using the default rc.inet1 file and
changing the IP.

The rc.inet1 comes with the following variables:

  IPADDR="192.168.1.9"
  NETMASK="255.255.255.0"
  NETWORK="192.168.1.0"
  BROADCAST="192.168.1.255"
  GATEWAY="192.168.1.250"

For good or ill, I have left all of them alone, except IPADDR.
I have 2 machines side by side, one defined as .8 the other .9

For the .8 machine I have following data:

ifconfig tells me the following:

Any suggestions as to why they cannot traceroute?

        Unfortunately the sound card is Windoze (die evil spawn of
HELL) only as well.  Fortunately there are a lot of good real sound
cards you can use.  I use the SoundBlaster Live PCI512 with absolutely
no problems.

Hi,

        RedHat uses xscreensaver (a rather old version though) and you
just need to modify the xdm config files to get a login screensaver.
I would strongly suggest you go to the xscreensaver web site
(http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/) and fetch the latest version.
After you compile and install it you can read their documentation
which describes exactly how to acomplish what you want.

... and that was exactly what I was doing wrong. Somehow - I really
can't remember how - I created a cron file for the user 'root' with the
username in it. I think, I played with 'crontab -e' or something. So I
had two identical crontabs, one for root and the other for the system...
took me nearly a decade to find that out !

Hello,

during my Redhat 6.0 installation, i can see with DiskDruid NT
Partitions on my HD.
They are listet as OS/2 HPFS. Is this correct?
After i have mounted them, they are empty, but there should be files.

Story:
On this HD i had a NT 4.0  installation, with a primary and some
extented partitions.
Then some day NT did not boot (Blue Screen), it could not be repaired
and not be reinstalled in this primary partition.
That's why i installed linux in that primary partition. In the hope to
get to these files on the extended partitions.
Now i see the partitions, but no files.
What do i else have to do.

First I have to admit I didn't yet check the /root/*Log files ...

But maybe one of you can give me a quick answer:
I installed SuSE 6.2 on an i486/66. I tried to configure XFree86 (using
SaX). When the test starts (or when I try to run startx from the command
line), I get an error saying something like "Fatal error [...] no
screens found".

What does this error mean? And how can I solve the problem?
(As I already stated: I didn't yet check the log files ...)

Huh??? How did you mount the partitions? I would do something like
mount -t ntfs /dev/hda? /mnt -o ro,uid=100,gid=100

That means mount /dev/hda? as NTFS partition on /mnt with options
read-only, use user with UID 100 as owner, use group GID 100 as group
(on a standard SuSE installation that's youraccount.users). Do NOT mount
a NTFS partition for writing, the NTFS support of linux is still beta
and trying to write on NTFS file systems may cause data loss.

I have a problem on FTP Shell script:

I have a client who can upload a directory to my FTP Server( only for
uploading ).
But whenever he uploads the directory, all previous files inside the
directory are overwritten,
however, I need to keep the old files.

So whenever before a new directory is uploaded, the old directory is moved
 backed up) to
somewhere. How can I write a bash shell script to achieve this task ???

I am using RH Linux V6.1.

maintainers no longer have their domain. If you'd like to

Hi, I`ve had a look through the previous discussions and can`t find
what I`m looking for.

I have a Zip100 drive mounted on my Linux machine (Dell XPS T700r,
256MB, SuSE 6.3, kernel 2.2.13) under /dev/hdd4

Normally it works without any problems, but occasionally, after I
unmount a disk and mount a different disk, a  ls  shows the contents of
the previous disk, not the new disk.  It then tells me that the disk
has been mounted readonly.

I`ve tried remounting the original disk, but that`s now readonly too.

A  mount  tells me that the disk is mounted  rw, and the only solution
to getting the Zip working properly is to hard reboot the machine.
Obviously not ideal!

Does anyone know if this is a common problem?

I am sharing the Zip drive through Samba, allowing access through Linux
and my VMWare virtual machine.  I stop Samba when umounting, but this
doesn`t seem to have any effect.

Yes it's safe. A more usual tactic is to remove or compress /usr/doc/
and /usr/info.

   You want the UNIX FAQ (ftp://rtfm.mit.edu). You also want 'man
bash' or whatever your shell is.

   Quickstart:

====== mybatchfile ======
#!/bin/bash     #(sh, ksh, perl, whatever)

myfirstcommand
mysecondcommand
therestofmycommands
====== end of mybatchfile ======

   Then make it executable by:

chmod 744 mybatchfile

Then actually execute it by:

./mybatchfile > filewheremyoutputgoes

   As I said, get the UNIX FAQ (and the Linux one too while you're at
it, it's just a couple clicks/keystrokes away)

   OP here -- just to say thanks to all who responded. As usual, I
found the answer less than one minute after my post went out (I didn't
cancel it, however, to see what responses I would get).

   The reason I couldn't find anything was that in my searchs I used
the word 'manual' -- when I realized, I tried something like "write
man page" in Altavista, which brought up the Man-Page HOWTO :)

mentions the authoritative guide to Troff by J.F. Ossanna and B.W.
Kernighan <ftp://ftp.uni-trier.de/pub/books/obi/Bell.Labs/cstr/54.gz>

   Previously, I had done what Peter describes above, i.e. 'borrow' a
page from the man directories and go from there, so I already knew
'how', but now I wanted to know 'why'

   Not that I could find on the net or in my distribution (RH6.0),
where nonetheless gmc recognizes dxf files as graphic files -- it
represents them with a special 'dxf' icon and tries to open them w/
Electric Eyes, but apparently this program (my version anyway) is
unable to recognize them.

   What I do is convert them to EPS in AutoCAD -- which gives me the
idea that, since both of those are ASCII-based vector formats, a
converter could be feasible (one of those days when I have the time)

   However, if you do find a viewer, I'd appreciate your posting a
link to it.
