It's possible in theory, but I don't know of any rh7-compat-glibc RPMs out
there. It would need to be an RPM anyway to keep the dependencies in RPM
happy...

Anyway, the code should have little to no trouble compiling in a RH6.x
environment.

I would like to get hold of XCHAT, which I believe is a good IRC program. I
have found some references to it via various seach engines, but...

1. There are several different packages (source and binaries, different
versions of Linux), how do I know which one to doanload. I am running
Mandrake V 7.1.

2. Once downloaded, how do I install it!

Not any more.

Unix is falling by the wayside... I remember once when someone said
"professional CAD/CAM, PCB design software, etc. is a UNIX domain."

Not any more.

NT/2000 have basically taken up that slot.

This is a time that will be long remembered. It has seen the end of UNIX's
hold on design software, it will soon see the end of its hold on publishing
software.

You'll have to precisely follow the instructions with the pctel.o
module, especially as far as using the matching modules and kernel
versions are concerned.

I've got a Compaq Presario 800 notebook and i've installed redhat 6.1

It detected my ATI Rage Mobility-M card, but i'm having trouble selecting
the screen. If I choose the standard LCD 1024x768 i can get X running but
the screen is garbled.

I thinik this has something to do with the horizontal sync and the vertical
refresh rate.

The values in the XF86Config file are:
HorizSync 31.5-48
VerticalRefresh 60

I don't have this info for the screen (it didn't come with the notebook) and
i've tried emailing compaq but haven't got an answer. I've searched all
over the net!!!

Does anyone know of a utility that will be able to detect this. Is there a
way i can find out in Win98 (regedit maybe)? Or does anyone have linux
running on the same notebook?

thanks.

xanim will play Indeo 3, 4 and 5; MainActor does not support these on
Linux. IIRC there is currently *no* player available on Linux that
supports I263, IMC, or MP34 (except maybe MS MediaPlayer under WINE).
There is something that supports DIVX but I seem to have lost the
bookmark!

Subject: CDR problems - help needed
Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 21:28:09 +1000

I'm new to linux, and new to writing CDs, so I was probably asking for
trouble, but I'd really appreciate any suggestions as to what I should
try next...

I'm running RH6.2 on kernel 2.2.16-3. My machine has an internal SCSI
Ricoh RW7060S. The SCSI card is an NCR 810. I've been trying to burn
Kodak Ultima CDRs.

I've followed the CD-Writing HOW-TO to the letter (writing about 150M
of iso9660 data - I can mount the image and see it properly). I can
see that stuff's been written to the CD. But when I try to read it, it
won't mount, giving me a 'Wrong Media Type' message. It won't load on
a Windows 98 machine, either.

I notice a few things that may or may not be relevant : I really don't
know what to try next...

Firstly, at boot time, the SCSI card driver reports :

ncr53c810-a-0-<0,*>: device did not report SYNC.

I guess this might be because there's no CD in there when I boot.

Secondly, the HOWTO refers to an sr module, but cdrecord -scanbus
seems not to care, and reports my device correctly. I've used insmod
and lsmod to try to find this module, but it seems to be non-existent.

Thirdly, cdrecord goes through its data-writing phase error-free, but
I get an error when it gets to the fixating stage. The error is always
(5 attempts so far, presumably 5 coasters)

cdrecord Inout/output error close track/session : scsi sendcmd :
retryable error
CDB:...
Status: 0x2 (CHECK CONDITION)
Sense Bytes:...
Sense Key: 0x2 Not Ready, Segment 0
Sense Code 0x04 Qual 0x01 (logical unit is in process of becoming
ready)...
Sense Flags:Blk 0 (not valid)

After the error, though, cdrecords that fixating took (say) 13seconds,
with a 480 second timeout.

Is my kernel wrong? Is there something wrong wth my SCSI setup? Is my
burner stuffed? Am I using crummy CDRs?

Help!

John

Makes one wonder how this helps sell Toshiba machines, does it not? Who would buy one
with this $200/event non-Microsoft surcharge? Does Microsoft own a large interest in
Toshiba? I wonder if the Justice Department considered this as part of their evidence
against Microsoft. 8-(

OK. So your cron entry says:

0,15,30,45 * * * * /usr/local/bin/yourftp >/dev/null 2>&1

See also http://pcunix.com/Unixart/cron.html and of course the
man pages on your own system.

Not necessarily. If it does a "sleep 900" it isn't using any cpu
time, and whatever memory it uses can be paged out if it is
needed. But cronning it is fine.

Older versions of NT and Win9x had a lot of memory leaks
that would degrade performance over a short period of time (hours to
days). I do not know if Win2000 is still vulnerable to this. I
suspect it is since I've heard they still recommend continual
scheduled reboots.

The trouble is, 100% conformance with which version of MS-WORD? They do not
seem to conform with one another. People with one version often have trouble
reading documents written by another. Usually, the latest and greatest can
read older versions, but not vice-versa, so if anyone uses a version newer
than the others in a community, all the rest must upgrade. That can be an
intolerable expense. The recent implementation of "fast save" (I think it is
called), and distributing MS-Word with that turned on by default, is a
particularly odious example.

You could do that, but a sniffer would then grab your root password, as well
as your normal user's password. You are better off using ssh instead of
telnet. In fact, you are better off disabling telnet altogether if you
possibly can.
