Yes I know that the kernels themselves are not distributionspecific.
The problem is that I'm using a RAID controller and with the RH 7
distr... the driver was supplied. In the kernelupdates on
www.kernel.org it is not.

News:
The problem involve the exportation of vfat filesystems. With cdrom, or ext2
filesystem there aren't problems.
(the /w98 is a vfat filesystem partition)

I am re-installing OpenSSH (it installed fine the first time but I had some
directory paths I wanted to change during the "./configure" stage.
So I do the "./configure" with various options like "--prefix=/usr",
"--sysconfdir=/etc/ssh", and so on.
But now when the "./configure" finishes (and it seems to run ok) I do a
"make" and get the following message:
"make: *** No targets. Stop."
Can anyone tell me what this means and how to fix it?
Thanks,
Tom

I've tried everything stated below and I'm still having problems. It just
won't work. I keep getting the undefined symbols and I'm not sure where
they are!
This is after I updated all packages to fall into the minimum versions
specified:
[root@naboo /root]# depmod -a
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/lib/modules/2.4.1/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack.o

What IS this sockopt? Why is it unresolved? Any ideas? I really want to
run with the 2.4.1 kernel, but I refuse to do so if the firewall stuff is
broken.
Thanks again for any help.

Hello,
yes, that seems right, that your client has to be some kind of www browser
which talks
HTTPD to the squid proxy, maybe we thought about something different...who
knows...
I almost use ftp (CLI), as I like it much more than in NS or other GUI tools...

Hrm. If portability is important, then Java and Tcl/Tk would both
apply -- probably the former would be a better approach since it's
structure and style are a bit like C++ (albeit being trapped in
classes, forever...). For that, hrm, Sun provides tutorials IIRC.
With Tcl/Tk, perhaps Ousterhout's "Tcl and the Tk Toolkit" would
work. Tk interpreters can be built into C++ programs (perhaps C
as well, IIRC), and, methinks, Perl.
If you're instead interested primarily in Unixland, then toolkits
like Xforms (http://world.std.com/~xforms) become an option.
Xforms is one I like for designing small utils, because it's a)
entirely in C, and b) includes a graphical layout manager, which
means that I *don't* have to pull out graph paper and start
plotting coordinates by hand. OTOH it's probably not as full-
featured as GTK.

The "require.scm" file is included in the "umb-scheme" package. At least
on redhat 6.2

It means "make" can't see a "Makefile" in your current directory; or
possibly it exists but contains no targets, is not readable, etc. Have a
look, is there a Makefile (or makefile or GNUmakefile)? What does it
contain? What are it's permissions?
My guess is you're probably in the wrong directory; the alternative is
configure has for some reason failed to create a Makefile, and failed to
say so.
Anyway, make -d will tell you exactly what's going on, but it is a bit
verbose, so try:
make -d | grep Considering

Subject: ftp and proxy ?
Date: 7 Feb 2001 15:23:25 GMT
Hi,
(I posted this to alt.os.linux but didn't get any reply.)
I try to download files using the ftp command via a proxy server:
ftp>proxy
(command) open proxy-url port
connected to proxy-url
At this point I don't get a prompt. How can I connect to the second ftp
server that has the file I'm trying to download?
thanx for help!

You missunderstood what VNC is good for.

Hello,
i am looking for a solution to distribute video live streams over the
internet. The solution has to contain following components:
1. frame grabbing via videocard, webcam or firewire
2. streamingserver.
3. Proxy for streamingserver, if the bandwidth of the streamingserver is
not big enough.
The streams should come with minimum latency and together with audio.
thanks in advance

Subject: Re: How to debug sporadic system crash?
Date: Wed, 07 Feb 2001 17:46:04 +0200
I got private e-mail (thanks Bill!) about this problem, and I'd like to
share it with You:
1. Power supply problem
The power supply could have too much load and therefore be more sensitive
to very short power outages than the other computers.
In this case there would be no log entries about the shutdown.
2. CPU fan problem
I don't believe that this is the cause, because I think a faulty fan should
cause more frequent reboots. Now we have had 5 reboots in 12 days.
3. Kernel panic
There should be a message in /var/log/messages about the panic.
But if the panic is caused by bad swap disk and /var disk problems, then I
guess no message could be written. But we have noticed no disk problems
(missing/corrupted files).
4. Cracker rebooting the system
This should leave some messages at shutdown time to logs.
