Yes, I've used it repeatedly. Just do this:

export CLASSPATH=.:$CLASSPATH:/usr/lib/pgsql/jdbc6.5-1.2.jar

Here's the dbtest.java example from "Enterprise Java in a Nutshell"
configured for PostgreSQL:

      // Set the connection properties
      Properties dbProps = new Properties();
      dbProps.put("user", "user");
      dbProps.put("password", "");
      //      dbProps.put("server", "dev1");
      // Get the connection from the pool
      Connection conn =
    DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:postgresql:jonas", dbProps);
      Statement s = conn.createStatement();
      s.executeUpdate("insert into profile (name) values ('Jim')");
      s.close();
      conn.close();
    }
    catch (ClassNotFoundException cnfe) {
      System.out.println("Failed to load JDBC drivers.");
      cnfe.printStackTrace();

No, dd uses the device definition of the driver. Therefore, it is
restricted to the low-level format of the diskette, such as number of
cylinders, sectors/cylinder, etc. It is true that dd does not care
about filesystem formats, etc, but only the raw device characteristics.

There are several formats available for diskettes, different from the
the 1.44 MB format of DOS diskettes. To get an idea, look at /dev/fd*.

Some diskette copy-prevention schemes would skip a track, such that
normal copying would encounter a media error at that cylinder. The boot
process of the diskette would modify the diskette driver to ignore the
missing track.

ps2pdf still isn't doing a very good job, personally I recommend using
pstill (http://www.this.net/~frank/pstill.html) to do the job, the Linux,
Solaris, IRIX, FreeBSD and HPUX versions are free for private use. It works
beautifully for me.

ok, youll get it:

linux is the better one ;)

linux dont lie on its users. linux doesnt say "you dont need to know
anything to perform difficult tasks on computer". microsoft says that all
you need to know is how to move a mouse and then my users call twice a day

If it was a well-behaved tarball then you should be able to 'make
uninstall' from the source directory. Otherwise, rm -rf
/usr/local/packagename/ is as good as any. (You did put it in
/usr/local/packagename/ where it belongs, didn't you? :)

It seems I can't change to overlay, if I try to do it in /.xawtv I get

This is xawtv-3.11, running on Linux/i686 (2.2.12-20)

So I suppose the question I should ask is how to configure v4l-conf.

Generally you'll be downloading a file that looks like
TheLatestRelease.0.2.5.tar.gz put this into a temporary
directory and unzip it with the command:

$ tar -xzvf TheLatestRelease.0.2.5.tar.gz

the converntion is that this file will be unpacked into a directory called
TheLatestRelease.0.2.5 within the working directory.

so go into this new directory with cd TheLatestRelease.0.2.5 and read any
README or INSTALL or INFO or READ.1ST files.

If you follow the instructions provided in the text file that comes with
the package you can't go far wrong. Some installs can be a bit tricky, and
there are even some that I've never been able to get to work, so if you get
stufck and you've read all the documentation and tried evwerything then post
back here with your questions giving the EXACT package name and the URL from
where you d/l'd it and the exact error message along with the exact commands
thet you're typing.

"tar -xvzf", doesn't install anything it just expands the tar file. To
remove the directroies that you've created while untaring files read the
man page on the remove command:

$ man rm

Good point, I was a bit careless in my wording. They are not, in
fact, the same program, although they are both often used for the same
purpose -- that is, temporary root shell access.

sudo works one command at a time, within the current user shell, and
offers more control by the admin as to which commands, exactly, a
normal user can utilize via sudo. sudo also offers detailed logging
of any commands issued on root's behalf.

su, on the other hand, gives you a full root shell and full root
access, and the only default logging is the authentication process
itself.

If /dev/hdb5 is your empty partition
put

Then do mount -a
and the new partition will be mounted over the old one.

If you want to first move all the stuff from /var. do
first
mkdir /newvar
mount  -t ext2 -o rw /dev/hdb5 /newvar
cd /var
tar -cpf - .|(cd /newvar; tar -xpf -)
umount /newvar
Put the above line into /etc/fstab and then
reboot

(The reboot is to make sure that all of the log files actually point to
the new partition, rather than the old one).

Note before rebooting you might want to pare down /var to minimum as
once the new partition is mounted over it the files now tehre will
continue to take up disk space but will be inaccessible.

Nonsense.

The problem with Microsoft began in the early 90's (under Clinton), and
was made worse by a meaningless agreement between Microsoft and the DoJ
(again, headed by Janet Reno at the time) in 1995. Microsoft reportedly
walked away claiming that they could bundle a ham sandwich with Windows
if they wanted to.

Ironically, this agreement was rejected by the judge overseeing the
case as it did nothing to address the public concerns but it was ruled
that he didn't have the authority to reject an agreement between the
two parties. The judge was Thomas Penfield Jackson, the same judge
hearing the current case. I'm surprised he has been able to resist
saying "I told you so" to the Clinton administration for thinking
their weak agreement in 1995 would have any effect.

The fault lies with the Clinton DoJ who had the opportunity to fix this
in 1995 but dropped the ball massively. The only good thing to come
from the 1995 Consent Decree is that at least now the DoJ is more likely
to expect Microsoft to use weasel-wording to write meaningless
agreements (such as the reported settlement offer from Microsoft to stop
bundling things with Windows as long as it didn't hinder "innovation").

Certainly Microsoft's behavior in the 80's was far from sterling: but
for the vast majority of the 80's they had nothing close to monopoly
status. As late as 1994 or so, OS/2 was a serious contender.

  OK.. I think I would jump in here. I think what Ralph means is that
  you can't choose print options AT THE TIME OF printing a document. I
  have been using and administering all sorts of unix systems for
  ages. And although I find the unix printing system
  (printcap/filters..etc) powerful for a networked environment, it
  does lag behind the windows printing system in at least one
  respect. That is, it doesn't present a powerful uniform printing system
  interface to all the applications which allows user to choose
  various printing options ( e.g. quality of printout etc.)
  easily AT THE TIME OF printing. Maybe you could fiddle with
  postscript options but raw postscript is hardly an intuitive
  interface for normal users. Or you could fix a different printer
  entry for each and every option (canon1 for draft quality, canon2
  for high quality etc). That is cumbersome and the user needs to
  remember what each printer name means. Of course there's the problem
  of manufaturers only providing drivers for windows etc. But this
  problem goes beyond drivers and is in some way inherent in the
  non-interactive nature of printing that lpr/lpd combo provides.

I use festival+mbrola. You can get them from rufus.w3.org. Check also
their home pages and you'll find pointers to other packages too.

Please break your lines!!

Let me get this right. Youusually use 1.1 to dial up and be a IP masq.
But 1.2 also has a modem and sometimes you connect up using it.

In /etc/ppp/ip-up.local, put the lines
route del default
route add default gw $5
 and in /etc/ppp/ip-down.local put
route del default
route add default gw 192.168.1.1
