Subject: MP3 TO WAV
Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 15:24:26 +0200

I've just installed a Linux distribution in 486 and i have to work with
the shell, because X-WINDOW goes very slow.
So the problem is that I would like to know how to convert mp3 files
into wav, I mean, which exact comand I have to use to convert them.
THANKS

As Akira says, it's hard to jump into the middle, not knowing where
you've been.

Can you execute the script yourself, instead of having the server
execute it? When you execute it, you should see the errors directly.
However, the server should also log those errors somewhere (depending
on server configuration) when it executes the script.

Common problems: execute permissions, url locations improperly specified,
paths improperly specified (based on server configuration). From what
you have (sparsely) described, these are likely candidates creating
your problems.

You can use xmodmap to do that. The command is "pointer = 3 2 1".
It can be done on the command line, or you can put the
command in a file (mine is called .xkeymap) and automatically
invoke xmodmap in your .xinitrc file:

==================================.xinitrc====================================
#!/bin/sh

#fix up keymap
xmodmap .xkeymap

#start console window
rxvt -n Console -C -geometry 80x10+10+10&

According to the pppd man page, the script /etc/ppp/ip-up is
run automatically once the link is available, and
/etc/ppp/ip-down is run automatically when the link is shut
down. You can put commands in those to start and stop the
fetchmail daemon (or do anything else you want done when the
ppp connection starts or stops).

If you're talking about /etc/ppp/ip-up, that's run
automatically by pppd. It's not someting you're supposed to
run.

*DON'T* crosspost to N+1 groups! It's a violation of ettiquette and makes
people think you're stupid.

I believe the program you want is called mpg123. Search
http://freshmeat.net/ for it, or check your distro CDs since it's included
with several distros. Then you can just
$ mpg123 -w file.wav file.mp3

mpg123 is also a bare-bones player that can work well even on a 486/33
when you give it the proper options. Read its man page for details.

You can use mpg123 to do this.. It's a pretty good command line
utility.

$ mpg123 -w (mysong.wav) (mysong.mp3)

I added the brackets for clarity... don't use them..

My /etc/gpm.conf; note the "append" line. In X, use /dev/gpmdata,
Protocol MouseSystems (if you use the "-R" switch):

#  /etc/gpm.conf - configuration file for gpm(1)
#
device=/dev/psaux
type=ps2
append="-B 321 -R"

Find out where you installed the program. Get to SatrOffice's own bin
directly. For example
/the/directary/where/you installed/it/Office51/bin/./soffice

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
./soffice will execute the program.

Sorry for reincarnating an old thread; however, I just saw this one. Why
would @home care if you're running a web server on your home machine?

I'm doing exactly that same thing; I have a web page
(http://people.ce.mediaone.net/dkoleary) which simply redirects the
browser to my linux box. That gives me a *whole* lot more space, freedom
to do with the web as I want. I don't remember ever hearing that
Mediaone has similar restrictions - sure hope not...

Has @home ever explained the restriction?

Maybe Corel Linux has installed glib in /usr, enter this at the command
line
glib-config --prefix
if it says /usr instead of /usr/local then you will have to remove all
the glib stuff from /usr/lib/ and /usr/include/ , also get rid of
/usr/bin/glib-config
you probably also have an old version of gtk+ in /usr as well.

What kind of package manager does Corel use?
You should be able to use that to remove old versions of glib and gtk+.

You should then probably run ldconfig to update the shared library
database.

Maybe I should put the ppa driver back in and then try to wangle something
with the order the drivers are loaded? I don't know...

Yes this is the case.
I had at one point the ability to say
mount -t vfat /dev/sdc /zip
and the module would magically load, but now I just get
"/dev/sdc is not a valid block device".
If I manually say "modprobe imm" and then do the "mount",
everything works.

No, on my dist its in /etc/modutils/* (modutils generates /etc/modules.conf).

Again, I'm using modutils so I suspect this may not be the kosher method.

Just installed an el-cheapo ide cdburner. It appears to work okay...

But...

I created an audio CD on a CR-RW and then tried to play it. At the very
start there is a VERy loud buzz, then the play begins. Once started it
sounds okay. There is a minor click between tracks, but not using DAO I
understand this is to be expected. No big deal.

I have not tried this yet with a CDR, mainly cause its the weekend and
the stores are closed....

I created the disk with track-at-time. I tired using DAO, but got some
funny error messages. Is this a burner issue or software? I'm using the
latest xcdroast (actaully called as xcdrgtk) and rcrecord software.

Also, since this is a ide burner I've had to do the scsi-emulation
thing. Seems to work fine for burning and for reading data disks. But, I
can't get xmcd to work properly. It plays, but it will not allow me to
change tracks or the volume settings. Anyone happen to know how to set
this up for fake-scsi?

I already checked all "fader", "crossfader", etc. at freshmeat, but none
of them did what I wanted it to do. I want to write the output to a file
in order to burn it to a CD, but emixer (just like xmms-crossfade) only

ppa is not the correct driver for your ZIP drive; don't even bother with
it.

/dev/sdc? Er, ZIP disks are partitioned, so sdc shouldn't give you
anything at all unless you've formatted the ZIPs yourself and made them
incompatible with just about every other ZIP drive setup in existence.

>Interesting, where can I find out how aliases work? How do I know which

Hmm. Information on this stuff can be found with "man conf.modules".
However, it might be easier to just put the line "modprobe imm" in your
/sbin/init.d/boot.local or /etc/rc.d/rc.local or wherever Debian keeps its
local boot script. That way the module will be loaded automagically on
boot with a bit less fiddling around. It's not exactly correct way to do
things, but it should work....

I guess this is exactly what I have done! I'm using the drive to backup
my linux stuff. The plan is to have a linux filesystem on the disks,
so I'd need linux anyway to read them. Though the disk I'm looking at
now has a vfat fs on it. And it did work under windows, despite the
/dev/sdc. Is this weird?

Yeah but this doesn't tell me what aliases the kernel expects..

Yeah, I guess that'll have to do for now.
BTW about the probing at boot time, I'm not sure I agree with your
previous post, because things like serial ports and scsi devices _are_
probed. Is that only because they've been compiled into the kernel?
Hm, I could've sworn ppa was being loaded at boot time and I wasn't
mounting the zip drive. Oh well.

For the first problem, read the Ethernet-HOWTO.
For the second, I think the solution may be Samba, but I'm not sure.
