All,

OK, I have read the gotchas and caveats about RH 7 and it's "kgcc" but it
still doesn't help the problem I'm having.

This is the errors I am getting on 2 different boxes. One of these is a
RH 6.2 server install upgraded to RH 7 and the other is a clean RH 7
workstation class install. No modification to the kernel configuration
has been made or anything, just a simple "make menuconfig" then immediate
save, then a "make dep; make clean; make bzImage" which gives the
following compile errors on both machines. Can somebody tell me what the
fix is for this?

TIA,
Jeff

This chip is my worst nightmare. My gf's computer has this chipset. First
it gave here a lot of trouble under Win98 (random hangups, rundll crashes,
etc.). Then when I tried to convince here to use Linux, it would work at
all and now (after the bimonthly reinstall of windows), the OS hangs when
I try to install the driver.

Hi!

When I was installing a rpm (rmp -ivh package_name), I noticed message:
cannot get shared lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packeges
(I don't have this directory on my system)

cannot open Packeges index using db3 - operation not permitted (1)
-> The rpm database cannot be opened in db3 format. If you have upgraded the
rpm package you need to convert your database to db3 format running
"rpm --reduilddb" as root.

Afer this messages I saw progress bar and software was placed in target
directory. Then I uninstalled package. And when I enter:

rpm -qa shows, that packeg is istalled
rpm -e can't uninstall package, 'cos it is not installed
rpm -i cant install package, 'cos it is installed

I have no problem when I try to install or uninstall others packeges.
My system is: RH 7.0.
What is going on? How to install this package and what to do that command
rpm -qa doesn't show message that package is already installed?

Best regards,

If you are coming over from a Windows background, you will like StarOffice
5.2. It even is present both in Windows and Linux environments (how's
that for compatibility?). The commands used are very similar to Word, and
the output is compatible with Word. You can't beat the price for
StarOffice (at $0)!

Basically, StarOffice is a good "replacement" for Word... until you have
the time to learn more UNIX-typed approaches to word processing. LaTeX is
mentioned, and there are a lot of similar programs that are all based on
the Markup Language approach. You are probably familiar with HTML. Well,
the resulting file is a simple text file with character sequences
interpreted as the formatting. Remember all those "useless" commands in
MS-DOS like fc? Those are copied over from UNIX, and are designed to work
with text-only files. So when you use the Markup Language approach, all
these text-manipulation commands are available to you (and they are very
fast in executing), including grep.

When you are very familiar with Windows, and just getting started with
Linux, you will find that any cross-platform programs, including
StarOffice 5.2 and WordPerfect Office 2000, are nice to use. But you need
to keep learning the stuff you don't know about already, like LaTeX, and
bash, and linuxconf (these are only examples).

lxy/latex can make PDF documents. Try pdflatex. This isn't the best
solution, since it doesn't deal with postscript images. The best method
is to latex the file, use dvips to make a ps file with embedded images,
then ps2pdf to make a pdf doc. I think there is a pslatex to avoid the
first step.

Seconded... I would recommend if it is an onboard card disabling it in
BIOS and buying a cheep soundblaster card and using that instead.
My Win98 install now works fine with after abit of swearing, but Linux
detects it, says it will load the driver, then says driver loader...
try doing anything and I get driver not loaded... lsmod shows the
sound driver as loaded, rmmod of the soundcard driver kills my system
with a string of errors... going to rebuild this weekend so will have
more info later.

1) In /etc/X11/XF86Config , make sure the lines for the 100dpi fonts
occur BEFORE the lines for the 75 dpi fonts.
2) Many programmes allow you to choose the fonts and font sizes used.
In Netscape you find this under the menuitem Edit->Preferences->Fonts .

apache stops and all processes are gone. When I run apache without ssl, a

For on-line documents, pdfLaTeX is much better, as it makes it very easy to
produce links. A couple of packages (such as hyperref) are all that are
needed to turn cross-references into hyperlinks, and the table of contents
into a nice tree of contents links. Thumbnails can easily be produced and
linked in, so that the final pdf has all the gimics you could want, all
without changing more than a couple of lines at the start of the document.
Obviously, this does not matter for printed documents, but for on-line
documents it makes a huge difference.

The mod-ssl documentation explains different methods on how to enter
the passphrase for the private key required for the SSL certificate.

My new PC has an ABIT KT7-RAID Motherboard, with LS-120 on the primary IDE
as master and an IBM 75GXP 30Gb on the Primary RAID as master. It is set as
UDMA5 in the highpoint bios and I am having problems...

1. When it comes to disk management installing RH7, no device is found on
which a filesystem can be installed. Do I need drivers to be loaded and how
would I do this prior to installation?
2. I took the HD onto UDMA66 to see if anything else had probs, and when it
came to making a boot floppy, the LS-120 had no activity and hung the
system. Hence I could not boot into Linux normally afterwards because LILO
didn't install.

For users' information, my GeForce2 GTS worked fine out of the box with
XFree86 4.0.1 and the SBLive! was cool too. Just the Mobo, HD and LS-120
were problematic.

Any help would be brilliant. And I do read this newsgroup regularly and
couldn't find anything about this specifically elsewhere.
