Check the settings in your /etc/conf.modules file. This should create an alias
for the "eth0" you are trying to bring up. Basically, this explains to the
kernel that when you want to bring up eth0, the kernel should load the
appropriate module for your respective card. If you are using a standard card,
and have a fresh install of most of the distributions, your card should be all
configured. If this is the case, use your control panel app for whatever
distribution you are using to configure ip address, dhcp and other host-related
configs...

I have lilo start linux up with 50 rows in text mode. How can I change
it on the fly to 25? Something comparable to the old mode co80,25 kind
of thing.
Thanks

There is a program called "oe2mbx" which converts OE5 folders to standard
MBX format - look for it on http://www.freshmeat.net/ or, if you're
really desperate, email me back and I'll send it to you - the source is
only a few K in size ...
I have used the program - it seems to work very well.

Subject: kernel identification? What is "what" in Linux?
Date: 9 Jun 2000 12:54:41 GMT
Being relatively new to the Linux installation process (Redhat)
I'm wondering about the question which kernel gets installed
when I pick a 2.2.14 kernel (/boot/vmlinuz) from one machine, put it on a 6.1
Redhat upgrade bootnet floppy (1999:0045 or whatever that is on the redhat
errata site), put that floppy into the machine and install via NFS
from another machine (where the 6.1 Redhat CD is located).
Does the installation process install the kernel from the CD or the
installation floppy?
With what tool can I find out from just looking at the file (a la
'what /kernel' or 'what /vmunix' one is used from UNIX systems)?

Just make a linux boot disk. Then format your c drive, start the setup with an
extra parameter, i thought it was 'setup.exe /s' or 'setup.exe /c' (think the
s, not 100% sure). Then reboot, if you get lilo, then you used the right
parameter. If not, insert linux boot disk, reboot, boot linux, login as
root and type 'lilo', then reboot from hard disk and everything is all right
again.

Newer GNU tar versions (ftp://alpha.gnu.org/pub/gnu/tar) have a flag
for bzip2, but the following works ...
$ bzip2 -cd foo.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -
Obviously you'll need bzip2 installed (http://sourceware.cygnus.com,
then follow links)

I hope you can help me, because I don't want to use windows anymore.

append to your /etc/lilo.conf the following lines:
other=/dev/hda1
label=win
assuming that win98 was on the first partion of
your harddisk otherwise do suitable alterations
and then issue the lilo command. you should be
abele to see both the labels ie linux and win. you
can choose either of the two at boot.

Hi,
There are two proggies that I know of ...
OCTAVE (see http://www.linux.org/cgi-bin/showlsm.cgi?entry=0000723 )
SCILAB http://www-rocq.inria.fr/scilab/
Octave is more MatLab "compatible" and is really fast. If you wish to do
more sophisticated work, you should definitely give SciLab a go. It is every
bit as capable as Matlab is (IMHO).
Mathematica is available for Linux (AFAIK).

Sooner or later you will nuke windows, believe me. That means, you
should investigate lilo, although loadlin.exe might be a save
alternative first. When you start using lilo, the safest way for newbies
is to boot from a floopy rather than from hd. That means, if the floppy
is present, then linux will load, otherwise the computer behaves as it
used to, i.e. windows will load.

Just list your missing symbols and look for them with nm in the rest of
the modules. A good suggestion was that you didn't have some of the
correct search paths for modules listed in your conf.modules file. You
should find the missing symbols in modules located in those unsearched
dirs. Obviously they are in the kernel somewhere!

Hi
it is not the formatting of the c drive that kills lilo
it is the windows installer that does it i know of no way to turn
it off it does not even propmt you if you want
to overwrite it it just does it
make a boot disk and use it to re run lilo
or you could use loadlin and boot a kernel
into the linux install then rerun lilo

This is very strange.
Config:
RH 6.1
Nescape 4.61 (installed from RH61)
Local network 192.168.0.x with gw 192.168.0.1 to the net via D-link 701
and cable modem.
Problem:
>From gnome or xterm when I start netscape from root account the window
opens with url listed but at the buttom status bar "Reading File". The
url points to index.htm file on the local hard drive. Minute or so later
it displays the file and I can proceed to the net.
As root I can telnet remote hosts on the net w/o problems.
If I login as myself netscape starts up and displays the text.
It was working great for root user not sure when it changed.
The only things that I have done is to copy win98 true type fonts and
following guide paper from linuxdoc.org to enable true type with Xfree86
v 3.3.5.0. Also, added some ppp-on scripts.
I did setup preferences under root for new tt fonts in netscape but not
myself. ( it may be the problem I have not thought about it)
Any ideas, can I trace/debug netscape to see what it pauses for?
Thanks

I've got these "lost interrupt" messages recently, but I was asking for
trouble.
I was playing around with hdparm and managed to send it the big "Y" the shut
down command. Of course the hdd spins down , but then I get about 2
"hdb:lost interrupt" messages.
Somewhere along the line, I managed to get the system sufficiently tied up
that consoles were not responsive . ( I was telneted in )
And I could not open new sessions. Surprisingly , it was answering pings .
Anyway, when I tried to access hda ( on the same interrupt) , the same
problem occured , and I couldn't acces my main hdd. Used the reset to get
out .
It seems that if I issue a big "Y" , it hangs for a while but eventually
comes out of it . But once I shut down a drive , I can't bring it up without
a hard reset . Somewhere in the hdparm docs, there is a warning about this.
Oh, and on boot up , it says that the PIIX3 is not 100% native and will
probe irq's later .
I've never had this happen on an old 486 that was using an isa controller
card .
I'm not bothered by it. I just refrain from shutting down the drive
completely . Now I send it the small "y" , which is the sleep command .
