Yes, leave it in /etc/passwd! Do use shadow password files though.

There really won't be a problem for quit a while at that size,
as several thousands of users is not excessive. I'm not sure
what the your definition of "unreadable" is though. If you mean
human readable... it doesn't need to be.

I guess the question is what kind of a problem do you actually
have if it grows larger? There is probably another way to solve
that without trying to split up the /etc/passwd file.

open up linuxconf (you can do this either in a terminal window or by
using
Gnome's "main menu" and going to system->control panel. You must be
root)
Click on miscellaneous services -> Initial system service
Set the default runlevel to Run level 3
Click accept, and you are all done.

This looks fine to me. You might wanna take a look
at what I have included below.

======<include lilo.txt>=================
Here are some informations on LILO errors:

(nothing) No part of LILO has been loaded. LILO either isn't
installed or the partition on which it's boot sector
is located isn't active.
L(error)... The first stage boot loader has been loaded and
started, but it can't load the second stage boot
loader. The two-digit error indicates the type of
problem. This condition usually indicates a media
failure or a geometry mismatch (e.g. bad disk
parameters).
LI The first stage boot loader was able to load the
second boot loader, but has failed to execute it.
This can either be caused by a geometry mismatch
or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the
map installer.
LIL The second stage boot loader has been started but
it can't load the descriptor table from the map
file. This is typically caused by a media failure
or by a geometry mismatch.
LIL? The second stage boot loaded has been loaded at an
incorrect address. This is typically caused by a
subtle geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b
without running the map installer.
LIL- The descriptor table is corrupt. This can either
be caused by a geometry mismatch or by moving
/boot/map without running the map installer.
LILO All parts of LILO have been successfully loaded.

And here are the error numbers...

0x00 "Internal Error" This code is generated by the sector read
routing of the LILO boot loader whenever an internal
inconsistency is detected. This might be caused by corrupt
files. Try rebuilding the map file.
0x01 "Illegal Command" This shouldn't happen, but if it does, it
may indicated an attempt to access a disk which is not
supported by the BIOS.
0x02 "Address mark not found" This usually indicates a media
problem. Try again several times.
0x03 "Write-protected disk" This shouldn't happen.
0x04 "Sector not found" This typically indicates a geometry
mismatch. If you're booting a raw-written disk image,
verify whether it was created for disks with the same
geometry as the one you're using. If you're booting from
a SCSI disk or a large IDE disk, you should check whether
LILO has obtained correct geometry data from the kernel or
whether the geometry definition corresponds to the real disk
geometry. Removing "compact" may help too. So may adding
"linear".
0x06 "Change line active" This should be a transient error. Try
booting a second time.
0x08 "DMA overrun" This shouldn't happen. Try booting again.
0x09 "DMA attempted across 64k boundary" This shouldn't happen.
Try omitting the "compact" option and report this problem to
the author.
0x0C "Invalid media" This shouldn't happen and might be caused
by a media error. Try booting again.
0x10 "CRC error" A media error has been detected. Try booting
several times, running the map installer a second time (to
put the map file at some other physical location or to write
"good data" over the bad spot), mapping out the bad
sectors/tracks and, if all else fails, replacing the media.
0x20 "Controller error" This shouldn't happen.
0x40 "Seek failure" This might be a media problem. Try booting
again.
0x80 "Disk timeout" The disk or the drive isn't ready. Either
the media is bad or the disk isn't spinning. If you're
booting from a floppy, you might not have closed the drive
door. Otherwise, trying to boot again might help.

Hope this works

An environment variable is a variable that your shell knows about.
Examples include EDITOR, PS1, HOME, PATH, and a host of others. You find
out what they are set to by entering "printenv" or "set", and you change
them by doing:

export VARIABLE=value (sh, bash)
set VARIABLE value (tcsh, ksh)

No it does not need to be human readable. The problem is, we want to
develop a frontend so that everyone who works with us can easily add new
mail-users.
I simply don't like the idea of everyone being able to run-owned processes.
So it would be neat to authenticate using mySQL or anything.

There surely is. I could use WebMin or anything, but that would mean to
keep things exctly like they are without much flexibility to change the
system-configuration.

run [af86config|XF86Setup] again if you have a new graphics
card and/or monitor. If not edit /etc/X11/XF86Config and
change the mouse section to reflect the hardware you have.

/dev/mouse should most likely be linked to /dev/ttyS0.

I think his problem is that each time someone logs in to check email
(which any users do every few minutes) then the parsing factor of
/etc/passwd becomes cumbersome. Imagine if ten people want to check
her/his email in the same time on a machine with 1000 users. Then
the 1000 lines long passwd file would be parsed ten times simultaneously.
One solution is to use something like NIS. In that case the user info
is in a database which scales better while /etc/passwd not.

Once I read an article where the admins had *EXACTLY* the same problem.
They were using FreeBSD. Originally the system was fast, but as more users
were added, the time to parse the passwd file became longer and it happened
more often. Their solution was to change to YP. They were talking about
thousands of users though.

Ken,

In X Windows you can run 'xev' and it will report what it sees for each key
you press (stop it with the mouse on the close box). Then you can make
adjustments to your ~/.Xmodmap file. Also in X, you can run xkeycaps which
shows you the whole keyboard once you pick the kind to display. xkeycaps
will also write the key mappings to standard output, so by running it from a
shell you can save the output:

        # xkeycaps -keyboard your_keyboard_here > savemap

If you want different mappings in xterm, you can edit
/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm. I put in specific control codes for PF1,
PF2, etc. (VT220 pad function keys). Here's an example:

    <Key>KP_F1: string("\033OP") \n\

I hope this helps,
Michael

user,exec,nonumtails,conv=binary,umask=000 0 0

Is this correct? I've heard many methods of doing this, but none are
working. Please help!! I'm using RH 6.2 with kernel 2.4.0-test1.

If you can, e-mail responses to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you so much,
