if you are basically running only ip, and netbios, without all the weird dec
and such, the shomitti is a great price performer. i've used sniffer pro
for years, tcpdump, snort, and just not gonna spend 30K on a sniffer again.

Authentication failed - cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?
that is the error message I get when trying to start 'startx' as a user
other than root. for root it works so I'm assuming this is a bad
permissions error. I may have manually changed the permissions of the
display at one point. where is the display stored (I'm assuming
somewhere in /dev ?) and what should the permissions be?
(PS. it Xwindows starts in VNC using the VNC display so I'm pretty sure
it's a permissions problem on some 'file')

If you change the partition table of the disk that contains / , then
things get tricky. / must always be mounted, so it's impossible for the
kernel to re-read the partition table of the disk where / resides.
Installation and root/boot systems get around this problem by making
their / a RAMdisk, which solves the problem neatly.

Alternatively, download and run MasterBooter program. It lets you
choose 3 operating systems (6 in the registered version) to boot to.
Once you ran it, it will re-write the MBR and present you with a menu
(if you want) for 2 seconds at boot time (longer in the registered
version). If you do nothing, the first OS on your list will boot. It
also has a feature that I found indispensible, since my Win'95 kept
messing up my DOS/Win3.1 installation: you can ask it to hide other
FAT and/or NTFS partitions. This way, my Windows'95 doesn't know I
have DOS and DOS is oblivious to Win'95 existence. Voila! I have
Windows'95, MS-DOS/Win3.1 and RedHat 7.0 on the same HD. Of course, I
made sure LILO is installed in Linux partition and not in the MBR
(RedHat 7.0 actually requires a separate /boot partition, but LILO
worked the same in 6.0). Of course, I had to re-install Win'95 a
couple of hundred times since then. Not a big deal: just run
MasterBooter again. Micro$oft for some reason assumes theirs is the
only OS that is worthy of running on your PC, so it overwrites the MBR
(which, for some misterious reason, didn't happen with your NT
installation.).
Good luck,
Leman
P.S. BTW, does anybody know why I wouldn't have any sound in my RedHat
7? How do I install/configure the sound card driver(s)?

VMS has file versions. i.e. Every file is named xxx;N where N is some
integer. When you saved a new file, N would be incremented by one. The
result could be a directory full of files each sequentially numbered,
especially after many edits, each representing a version of the file.
Few people seem to know it, but you can configure directories to store
only a limited number of versions (say three). The common practice was
to run the purge command on logout which would remove all but the last
three versions of each file in every directory by default.
>i liked the TOPS-20 system. unix zealots will of course scoff.
VMS was good, dunno how I would find it now.

It's _fascinating_ if that be the case; RHAT has long been the primary
sponsor of work on Linuxconf such that Linuxconf is more a "RHAT"
package than it is one for other distributions.

Are all your boxes connected to switches versus hubs?? if so to sniff a
box -- you need to put a hub for your sniff box and the target monitor..
little difficult to sniff switches without extra tools or devices that
mirror switch ports.
also if you have more than 10/100 like gigbit need better sniffers.

I recently added a Red Hat Linux partition to my Windows 98 2nd Edition
P.C. For Windows 98, I am using the AT&T @Home Cable Modem Service
using an RCA digital / broadband cable modem. I am also using a Netgear
RT314 Router.
My NIC card is a SMC EZ Connect USB.
I have seen several somewhat condensed articles on getting AT&T@Home
cable modems to run with Red Hat Linux, but nothing has been very
comprehensive. It also seems the configuration may be different based
on the geography you are in. I happen to be in the Chicagoland (western
suburbs) area.
Has anybody seen or can point me to a document / article which describes
in detail how to set a AT&T@Home Cable Modem with my Red Hat Linux 7
system ? If so, please point me the way !! What makes this worse is my
Windows 98 modem is only Windows compatible and won't work on my Linux
system.
Any thoughts / comments appreciated and thanks in advance.

On my first Linux install, I made a separate /opt partition and quickly
regretted it because I had no clue as to the best partition size for my
situation and I ran out of room really fast! These days, I stick to just
3 for my home system: /, /boot and swap.
At the office, on the other hand, I ran into instances where a single
user would begin to use up all of the available disk space and here it
made plenty of sense to make /home it's own partition or even one or more
addtiional hard drives.

Subject: Linux Time problem?
Date: Wed, 09 May 2001 01:44:36 GMT
Could someone help me wit the following. I have a RedHat v6.0
linux box set up as a proxy/webserver. The box runs several scripts
including one that publishes some reports for people off of cron's.
The problem is I need to have the clock set correctly for cron to run
the scripts at the correct times. I have checked the bios system
clock and made sure it's set for US/Central time ( not GMT ) and the
correct date and time. I have set the linux OS time via the 'time'
utility within KDE, Also I have tried setting the time via the
date command with no success!
here's how I have been setting the time ( as root always! ) using the
date command. for ie: MAY 8 20:00:00 2000
#date 0508200001
--> 05 = may, 08 = the 8th day, 20 = hh, 00 = mm, 01 = yy
after hitting enter as root, I can type #date <enter> and the correct
date/time will be displayed, but here's the problem.
As soon as the machine reboot's the time jumps like 20 - 25
minutes ahead of what I originally set it prior to rebooting.? This
is absolutely bizarre. I have another Linux machine, exactly the same
config, and I have set the date and time the same way and that machine
holds the correct time. I don't get it. I have even tried shutting
off all the crons and resetting the time, and emeaditly rebooting (
thinking that the 5 or so cron entrys might be screwing up the
machine, but the same old thing just keeps happening). Also, I doubt
that the bios battery has gone bad on this machine, because the
machine is on 24/7. The machine does reboot every day at 01:00:00
hours every day.
If anyone has any idea as to what I'm doing wrong please let
me know I am totally frustrated.
Please feel free to email me at "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

I've run Sniffer Pro, and you'd better bring bags of bucks.
We've just gotten into the Shomiti stuff, and I think it's better bang for
the buck.
Invite them in to show their wares, and have a big checkbook.
You might also look at etherpeek, don't know if they've got a try before

Subject: cdrecord doesn't like oggvorbis > WAV
Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 19:09:56 -0700
I recently used oggvorbis to convert a file from OGG to WAV, so that I
could distribute it to some friends who use Windows. When I tried to burn
the WAV to CD using cdrecord I got the following error:
"Inappropriate audio coding in rms_speech.wav"
I can play the WAV file with XMMS. Any ideas on what the problem might be,
or more importantly, how I can get this file on CD?
